As Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett approaches a contract year, it appears he may be trying to increase his value a bit in the event he's eventually no longer backing up Tom Brady after this season....

This is interesting, was there any feedback on how he looked?

I'm being told by my sources that scouts were extremely impressed with the way the dirt was catching the ball and moving after the catch.

I've updated the entry, but according to this report he didn't look all that impressive:

Patriots QB Ryan Mallett just 'OK' at Arkansas Pro Day - CBSSports.com

EDIT: everlong got me by 60-seconds

What surprise me are the remarks about his build, if I recall correctly he was noted for dramatically improving his body between his rookie and second season. The OK part seemed to be in reference to his physique, this article said he was impressive on deep outs and go routes.

According to sources, Mallett looked "[physically] ok," but was impressive on "deep outs and go routes." So maybe not much has changed during his time in New England. He has to develop his touch on short passes if he wants to be successful in this age of efficiency.

At the very least I think the effort and willingness to showcase himself shows maturity over the person he was when drafted in 2011.

I'm a draftnik and coming out I had Mallet billed as a poor man's Drew Bledsoe which was why I never thought Bill would draft him. It wasn't Tavon Wilson shocking but I did say are you F'ing kidding me outloud. I'm not surprised he didn't look great. Maybe we can finally put to bed the Ryan Mallet for some high draft pick speculation.

To me it just looks like PatsPulpit has taken the article from CBS and taken words out of context. According to CBS the scout said that it was Malletts performance that was just OK.

I'm convinced Mallet was brought in to give the receiving corp some down field exposure during practice given Brady's reluctance to hit wide open WRs down field

Wow there Cousin!

If you read the article they talked about is gangly look and physical thin appearance.

Mallett isn't my best of best, but please re-read this.

Despite his less-than-ideal build, Mallett remains a talented thrower. His most impressive passes on the day, according to the source, were deep outs and go routes -- two of the more valued throws in today's NFL.

Your reporting like the Liberal media (or any media). What you want people to think your way, not the actual facts are how you portray it.

He has a better arm than all of the three kids and has a few NFL camps behind him. He was a better player to have O'Brien and McDaniels teaching him. He is only 25 and healthy. And now you want to nail him? Teddy B. has the same issue in gangly and frail looking, Manzeil has no where near the size or arm and Bortles you can say is just "O.K.". So why does that make any of them a better QB as the face of your franchise?

O.K. I am the Texans, Jags, Browns, Vikings or Raiders. The Browns missed with Weedon (weak arm and older than Mallett), The Jags missed with Gabbert (he is just scared. Mallett is not scared), Ponder from the Vikings? (Very short tape of one year, weak arm) and they Raiders? They just shotgunned to find a QB. The Texans have a coach who coached him.

If I am B.O. I have to go Clowney. Now I decide at the top of Round two, do I want Carr or Jimmy Garapolo in the second or take a shot with the more pro ready Mallett.

The Jags need O.L. desperately. A QB is a bad choice in Round 1 with some great OT's available.

The Vikes need D help and the Browns might wait and be in the 26th pick for a QB.

The Raiders need a QB but the talent rated ahead might be to tempting like a Kahlil.

I read the article. Where does it say he did not throw great? Where does it say he threw fastballs into the dirt? Where does it say he overthrew or underthrew? Maybe I missed something.

Kind of the same report that Tom Brady had before his Draft? Frail? Weak looking? Now add that Draft report Tom Brady threw crappy balls as in not a tight spiral.

Do I have my facts correct sir?

Mallett's issues were always with bad weight. He was 265 when he showed up to Arkansas, 253 at the combine, and is now listed at 245.

People don't give up first or second round picks for quarterbacks entering their 4th year in the league when they're just "ok". That's a fact, cousin. Feel free to keep mocking him in a trade in your next edition of trade-a-poplooza and I'll keep mocking those who think that's his value.

If those are the actual issues the people making the judgments are complete idiots. I could put Dan Marino's brain and central nervous system on Santa Claus's body and you'd have a better QB than 90% of the teams have.

If I'm a GM I need my QB to make throws, not look like an underwear model.

O.K. as in build and stature but threw a pretty good ball. O.K. I get it.

Seriously Mallett has always looked horrible...I think Rohan Davey when he was here had better days. $h!t you think we could get a Forth Rounder for Mallet now.

Kontra: would you throw your TV out the window if we selected that dirt in the First. If you can catch anything from Mallett you gotta have Great hands.

I'm really not surprised that it was reported that he looked "ok". I never thought it was possible to get a 3rd for him never mind a 2nd round pick for him. At this point I'd take a 4th round for him, but I have a feeling that he will be with us one more year unless Bill can sucker someone into taking him.

Elventy Billion first round picks for Mallett!
