I get what you mean, but if Maye looks halfway decent and Mayo proves he’s halfway decent and the offense looks somewhat modern and competent under AVP, I think that does go a long way. Outsiders right now rightfully have a lot of questions about the direction of the team. With Bill, it was pretty well established what you were signing up for. Getting a year of examples for Maye, Mayo, and AVP will be helpful - especially if they can finish close to .500.I hope I'm wrong, but I'm, skeptical that they're going to be in a better position next year as far as being a "destination". I expect us to have a terrible record again. Maye is a raw prospect and we don't have a good team around him so if he does play, I expect him to play poorly. Not saying that to imply he was a bad pick or won't ultimately end up a good player, I just think the year 1 performance isn't going to be a day 1 wonder.
I'm optimistic about the interior OL. Andrews is still quality at C. Sow seems to be developing really well at LG. Onwenu is an ok RT but can be a great RG. Embrace that. Don't try to chase sunk cost with Strange because he's a JAG. Don't go for the short term appeasement of putting Onwenu at RT, just keep him at RG. I expect Henry to continue to be solid at TE. I think Gibson is going to be a nice find for us as a receiving back. I think Baker/Polk/Douglas are all going to be "hits" at WR.
HOWEVER, Our OT play is abysmal. Team-crippling level of trash. While I like our developmental WRs, I can't see any of them being an NFL level #1 option next year if ever. Honestly, for this year, I think it's a stretch to think they'd be strong #2s even. Jacoby Brissett is a terrible starting QB and like I said, if Maye has to play he's a project who probably isn't good in terms of winning games this year. Poor QB play, dreadful pass protection, no receiving threats that dictate coverages a defense can play... that's a recipe for another ****-show on offense.
My guess is that next year we're in largely the same spot in trying to attract talent. We'll probably need another year of focusing on the draft, mostly sitting on the cap space to roll over, etc. But hopefully you develop last year's draft class (Douglas, Gonzalez, Sow, Keion White and maybe Mapu or Bolden show something this year) and find some progress with this year's class (Maye developing behind the scenes, Polk/Baker looking NFL caliber even if not #1s, Wallace maybe proving a worthy developmental player at OT even if not instant hit). And then next year you need to have another good draft with continued development of the last 2. And then, hopefully you have enough of an infrastructure for Maye to show encouraging signs and enough talent in place where you're viewed as a team ready to turn it around.
My biggest question is that "Maye looks halfway decent" part. He wasn't considered NFL ready and reportedly hasn't bucked that perception at all in camp. And if he does play, what's he stepping into... the pass protection looks like it's gonna be worst in the NFL again. Some encouraging individual receivers, but our recent trend of a decent overall depth chart getting the rug pulled out from under them because there isn't a close-to-respectable threat at the TOP of it to draw coverages figures to continue. So I'm seeing it as Maye not being NFL ready stepping into a weak pass blocking team with weak receiving threats. That's not a recipe to look "halfway decent".I get what you mean, but if Maye looks halfway decent and Mayo proves he’s halfway decent and the offense looks somewhat modern and competent under AVP, I think that does go a long way. Maye was the best qb in the draft and will be the best pro qb of the 3.I don't know, but Williams will have a far better ceiling and chance than Maye and MHJ was an overall more safe pick. Maye was good enough that we had to take him, but he was also not a slam dunk.
You may be right that players don't care, but more than half the paycheck is taxed by the home state. Quite often, it is much more.We over-emphasize the importance of taxes when you consider only half the paychecks are taxed by the state.
We are going to suck this year. He should be on the field learning. If he plays poorly that’s all the more reason he needs experience. My biggest question is that "Maye looks halfway decent" part. Maybe I'm too pessimistic, but if Maye plays this year I'm expecting it to look badly. I don't see him being someone who attracts players if he's forced into action. The opposite really. If he's forced to play this year, I think he's going to look bad and scare players off if anything lol. That's not saying he won't ever be good, I can't stress that enough. I just think he's one of those guys and this is one of those situations where a rookie QB is going to look terrible if he has to play.
Games the Pats should win will be losses and the opposite is bound to occur as well.8 win team?
The guy who will draw coverage away from his receivers to let them get open will be Maye himself. He is an athletic and mobile rushing threat. Not Josh Allen level, but in that zip code. When the play isn’t there or he’s getting too much heat, he’s able to break containment and extend the play to create something or rush upfield himself. They’ll also use designed QB runs. This will mean that defenses need to pay more attention to where he is specifically, causing less availability/attention for covering his receivers. My biggest question is that "Maye looks halfway decent" part. A lot needs to go the Pats way for 8 wins to happen.
I included it.I think you're forgetting the 4% surtax on income over $1M. And that 4% increases annually for inflation.
Some of those might hold water : weather and current talent on team come to mind.No one wants to play in New England...cheap owner, sh#t facilities, terrible team, awful weather, no prime time games, inexperienced coaching staff w zero track record, sky high taxes, stadium in the middle of nowhere....
Can’t say we don’t spent for top end talent. That is a lot of money.
Can’t fault mgmt for trying. That is a lot of money.
I’d be more worried about him playing poorly and getting trashed by Boston media and fans and then we have another Mac (with a lot more talent of course) who became a head case because of the criticism and pressure here combined with yes many things he did wrong of course ……but my point is don’t throw Drake in too early knowing we are going to have a rough year with no OL protection again so that the mediots and fans take it out on him and gets him in a bad track right out of the gate….Let him learn under Brissett this year and grow up a bit and then next year he should be ready to go……We are going to suck this year. He should be on the field learning. If he plays poorly that’s all the more reason he needs experience.
Chiefs have been playing 3D chess while we and many other teams are playing tiddly winksTheir number 1 receiver is a HOF player in Kelce.
They also just signed Hollywood Brown and traded up in the first to get a WR.
The Chiefs have been investing in the WR position every year signing vets and drafting WRs with high picks.
