Patriots place 2nd Round Tender on JC Jackson

Unless Bill is trying to get more draft capital for Watson, losing Jackson would put a blemish on these off-season moves.

I would be shocked if another team decides to sign him to an offer sheet and we aren't matching it.

Maybe that's the thought process... dangle him out there with a 2nd round tender in a year where there aren't many teams that can pay top flight CB money. Theoretically, with the 2nd round in addition, his market is lower this year than it will be as an UFA next year. They can match that deal, and get him at a lower number than they typically would have needed to keep him. Otherwise, if no one bites, you've got him for one more year (at least) on the cheap.

Definitely a dangle. Either we keep him for a decent price or get nice comp in exchange.
I’m looking at the second round. Looks like most teams in the top 10 are likely not going to pursue him.

Except the Jets. They could try and pull what Green Bay did to Chicago with Kyle Fuller in 2018. Plus they have a big need at the position, pick 34th.

This was a needless risk unless Bill is ready to open up the bank vaults on a huge $13m contract for JC.

Consider our track record drafting DBs in the 2nd round:

JoeJuan Williams
Duke Dawson
Cyrus Jones
Jordan Richards
Tavon Wilson
Ras-I Dowling

Would you rather have JC at $13m or one of these guys?

The Jets need a good CB and could offer more than NE since they have cap money to burn.

Conversely, a NYJ 2nd pick wouldnt be so bad.
34th pick. I’d be okay with that.

On the flip side he could go to a team like Cleveland where we’d only get the 59th. Not as big of a fan of that although Cleveland doesn’t have the leverage in cap space like the Jets do.

# 34 is basically a 1st round selection in a deep draft.

Also, what if the Pats have Surtain Jr penciled in @ 15? I haven't evidence on what type of DB scheme Alabama runs down there, but it could very well be similar to what BB teaches in NE.

Surtain is not considered an outside corner because of his lack of speed.

As for the #34 pick, Ras I Dowling was #33.

Our record at picking DBs is much much worse than our record of picking WRs.

After Farley and Surtain, there are no CBs ticketed for the 2nd round that look worth giving up a producer like Jackson. And Surtain can't even play Jackson's position.

Jaycee Horn looks really good too, but he's considered a reach at #15, and won't be available at #34.

I can see the Pats drafting Surtain if available at 15.

For every bad draft report on Surtain there are 5 good ones. Forget Playing on an Island, Alabama Corner Patrick Surtain II Ices the Opposition

He plays man and zone effectively.
