PATRIOTS NEWS Patriots pick up Gonzo’s 5th year option

Breaking New England Patriots Team News
FWIW salary is broken up into 18 (they get paid during the bye) weekly 'game checks' not 52
In fact, to help players budget better, the new CBA pays half of the salary during the season, and the second half over 18 weeks in the offseason.

FAFO. Play hardball, expect the team to play hardball too.
First, we are at a different point than others.

This scenario presumes that the team can't reach a deal now AND that Gonzo fulfills his contract through 2027.

The issue is what happens when the two parties have completed their contractual responsibilities.
=======================
The team could franchise Gonzo and be willing to have him play at the franchise tag amount. Gonzo would then have until July 15 to sign (no trades until then). And then, Gonzo can sign and report after Game 3 or 4 whenever seems convenient to him.

So, yeah, the team can play hardball and try to trade him after he signs in July, with the receiving team hoping that he shows up to play for them (I presume that he would with a no franchise clause). Of course, if Gonzo approves the team, the deal would be likely to happen).
=========
I AM NOT SURE
that an unhappy Gonzo would be worth a huge contract to the patriots. I suspect that he wouldn't even be worth the franchise amount if he doesn't report. But the team could get something in a trade if Gonzo cooperates.

My suspicion is that it is a really good deal to have Gonzo play 2026 and 2027 and then do a tag and trade to a team and deal that his agent finds. There need be no hard feelings. I would think that this would a very good deal for all if the team and Gonzo can't come to terms on a new contract.

You're right, my bad, as of the 2020 CBA it's now equal installments from September through April

Fair enough but my overall point remains it's part of the yearly salary cap budget and from a planning point of view can just be part of the normal 300 million I would assume is already accounted for from this years TV deals and such. Versus the new money in a mega contract which can be over a third of that. I seem to recall Indy not being able to sign a player until the coke head sold a bunch of guitars because he didn't have that kind of liquid cash.

Yes but that money is probably set aside for estate taxes, both Federal and MA. And that amount will not come close to covering the estate taxes due. MA is a terrible state to die in if you have any assets at all. The federal only impacts wealthy people but not the MA tax which kicks in at estates valued over 2 million. If you have a house located anywhere in greater Boston that alone will get you more then halfway there.

And if he's smart (I believe he is) he ear marked 250 of that for Maye and Gonzo. The other 475 went to his pocket to reimburse himself for the lighthouse and new practice facility

It is interesting that so many are concerned about Kraft's spare change. He has no trouble with liquidity.
