It really doesn't work that way. If the patriots want him to play a show-me season before wanting to extend him, then he will bet on himself and wait to see what he is worth in free agency.
I agree, people here seem to think it's all in the team's hands, but a lot depends on how his camp wants to play things.
The only reason the Patriots haven't signed a contract yet is because Gonzalez' camp is waiting for others to sign first so they can have leverage at this point.
5th year option + 2 franchise tags is on the table. It's not perfect, but he's here for 4 more seasons no matter what. I hope the Patriots don't go this route, but if his camp is waiting to maximize money, that option is definitely there. Him having the same agent as other players up for that sort of money is a monkey wrench in the plan.
Good points. We've already had him for three seasons, can keep him under control for four more. That would make his last season here his Age 27 season. Not bad for costing us a first round draft pick, then five seasons very much below market, and the last two at the high end of the market.
Or we can do what the Jete did, trade him in the middle of his fourth season to some team desperate for a top-flight CB. Their ROI was two firsts and a rotational-level WR. Never can be sure what you get in a trade, but still, there is gonna at least be a first in the picture.
We probably don't want to do that this season (no clear candidate to take his snaps, IMO) but hey, at the end of the season, if the two sides aren't in agreement of what he his worth, we can trade him to a team willing to give up at least a first and willing to give him the contract he wants since we'll still have him on contract.
I hope it doesn't come to that, but, the bottom line is if his camp asks for more than what we think he is worth, we have our options...
