PATRIOTS NEWS Patriots pick up Gonzo’s 5th year option

Breaking New England Patriots Team News
The only reason the Patriots haven't signed a contract yet is because Gonzalez' camp is waiting for others to sign first so they can have leverage at this point.
Which is of course interesting because the other big CB in line is Witherspoon, who has the same agents at CAA

I'm good, @Patjew had a thought in the Mike's job security in any danger thread.

Maybe it's the romantic in me but I believe our man PJ has many worthwhile thoughts.

It really doesn't work that way. If the patriots want him to play a show-me season before wanting to extend him, then he will bet on himself and wait to see what he is worth in free agency.

I agree, people here seem to think it's all in the team's hands, but a lot depends on how his camp wants to play things.

5th year option + 2 franchise tags is on the table. It's not perfect, but he's here for 4 more seasons no matter what. I hope the Patriots don't go this route, but if his camp is waiting to maximize money, that option is definitely there. Him having the same agent as other players up for that sort of money is a monkey wrench in the plan.

Good points. We've already had him for three seasons, can keep him under control for four more. That would make his last season here his Age 27 season. Not bad for costing us a first round draft pick, then five seasons very much below market, and the last two at the high end of the market.

Or we can do what the Jete did, trade him in the middle of his fourth season to some team desperate for a top-flight CB. Their ROI was two firsts and a rotational-level WR. Never can be sure what you get in a trade, but still, there is gonna at least be a first in the picture.

We probably don't want to do that this season (no clear candidate to take his snaps, IMO) but hey, at the end of the season, if the two sides aren't in agreement of what he his worth, we can trade him to a team willing to give up at least a first and willing to give him the contract he wants since we'll still have him on contract.

I hope it doesn't come to that, but, the bottom line is if his camp asks for more than what we think he is worth, we have our options...

Worth clarifying for some folk's sake, he's here for 4 more seasons should the Pats decide to go that route vs exercising a firm business decision to trade the asset
I mean, franchised players often do not report.
Vrabels message is "team". do right by the team and the team will do right by you.
fist in line is Gonzo. the team needs to put its money where Vrabels mouth is (no pun intended)
Vrabel needs to step up/in and demand Gonzo is here and happy

And there is the pivotal point. If both sides can agree on what that approximate 'worth' is, a deal gets struck. If it doesn't he either becomes a hostage or an asset. As in most any negotiation* each side will react in their own best interests and leverage what they can, don't hate the players, 'hate the game'

Understanding, of course, those are considerations for down the road. This negotiation dance has barely begun, the band isn't even fully warmed up. That negotiations may be proceeding quietly behind the scenes doesn't mean they are not amicable... so far

The only reason the pats haven't signed a contract yet is incase an injury happens this year is my guess. Getting it down early saves cash. But you also are locked in. They want Gonzo to show he can be healthy again this year and are willing to pay a few million to see proof of concept.
Treating him as a show-me player would likely result in him leaving if he plays well and staying if he were injured or didn't play at a continue higher level he would stay and then have a show-me year before free agency.
=========
I expect a contract to be signed by mid-July.

If a deal can't be agreed to, I expect him to play his 5th year and then leave for free agency,

I also expect a deal will get done but I strongly disagree with that last. Our current front office seems too savvy to allow Gonzalez to walk. I'd expect a trade and/or a tag or two before I see them just settling for a comp pick for a player of his caliber at a valued position.

hmm
So, let's say no deal is struck.

You would trade Gonzo instead of having him for the 2027 season? Not me.

I would think that he would be allowed to try free agency AFTER playing for us in 2027.

Under THOSE circumstances, the team has lots of options including the franchise tag, tag and trade, and having Gonzo's agent contact teams so that we can get the best deal. There is even the possibility of the team coming up with a deal Gonzo would accept, after he sees what other teams will offer.

Franchise tag, then Franchise Tag again.

I simply can't envision a scenario where the Pats just let him walk and accept the comp pick, which depending on their own signings they might not get. Again, I fully expect the contract extension gets done but I could see a mid 2027 season trade or a tag n trade scenario before I could see just letting him walk. The best a comp pick is ever going to be is an end of the 3rd round pick, for a player of Gonzo's talent at a sought after position that's not an acceptable return. OFC that's an all things staying as is outlook, all that could go out the window based on injury, the Pats own contender status in '27 and a host of other things

I'd throw in a tag n trade as a likely possibility as well before I could see them letting him just walk. Business is bu$ine$$ after all

Like sands through the hourglass, and the murder of 2 thugs by an NFL player in a bloody white suit so are the days of our lives.
That suit made it's way to a 55 Gallon drum on the corner of some Baltimore Street that night...pissed on by Mad Dog 2020

Just extend him. Price is going to be astronomical next year
I've seen reports that they can only have one of these huge deals each year (per Kraft), and getting Brown would kick both Gonzalez and Maye down the road one year each.

Many players take the money when it's thrown at them because they don't want to risk injury. He also knows the Pats can franchise tag him which players loath.

A player can simply not sign a franchise tag and not show up until the very last time allowed by the CBA.

There is no reason to believe that Gonzo would simply accept playing under two franchise tags.

I am all on board trading his ass. Can't be paying what he wants. Sorry not sorry. I'd rather pay linemen who force the QB to get the ball out fast as ****.

With that any decent DB can look good. Thats how I would do it.
