Patriots new OC - Alex Van Pelt

Tagovailoa ranks No. 1 among all NFL quarterbacks in having the quickest time to throw, an average of 2.36 seconds per pass, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Miami ranked #3 in passing 1st downs (223)
How did they do against good teams this year? Spoiler alert - not good. They don’t have a middle of the field enforcer. Their play designs are gimmicks and stats lie. Once competent DC’s stop their initial attack, they are dead to rights.

If their offense was so good, there’s no excuse losing at home for the Division title at home against the Bills and then one week later scoring 7 points in the Wild Card.

Stefanski called the plays and fired Van Pelt at the end of the season.
Look at what Van Pelt was handed with
BB - "Miss me yet?"
Browns had the 10th ranked offense and ran the West Coast.
And the Browns owners brought in the highest paid QB who was suspended for sexual assault crimes, got hurt and left their offense in the hands of three other starters and ended with a 39-year-old street free agent. The Browns offense in 2023 was a bizarre bet on Deshaun Watson (6 starts).

Van Pelt's job is not to make the 2023 or 2022 Patriots offense effective.

The question is what can Van Pelt do with a great owner, a younger, yet experienced front office, more than $60M in cap space that will focus on offense, the #3 pick in the draft who is looking more and more like QB Drake Maye, and a clear commitment to a modern football operation?

The Pats will sign key defensive free agents and clean house on offense. Conservatively, we're looking at four or five veteran trades or free agents on offense, and four draft picks on offense that are in the top five of their respective rounds. How will Van Pelt and Mayo and the front office handle this opportunity?

We have to ask ourselves what are reasonable expectations? The division is looking like a toss up as the Dolphins, Bills and Jets are either over the cap or just under (Jets.) Veterans are going to be cut all over the place.

Getting rid of the Bill Belichick creaky autocracy is healthy. It failed for the last four years and dismally in 2023. It looked like a broken down 2002 Pontiac Aztek rust bucket in 2023.

How was that a rebuild? We had most of the guys from 2019 on that team and they were all in their 30s?

We have 2 players from 2019 now (Andrews and Wise) and Wise didn't even play back then.

Since Mac Jones was drafted, over 50+ players on our regular roster joined the team.

Our FAs are now pretty old (Hunter Henry, Gesicki, Pharoah, Parker, JuJu, Bourne, Trent Brown, Reiff, Anderson, McDermott, Judon, Godchaux, Ezekiel) but otherwise, most of all our other players are young.

The only exceptions to this are Wise, Andrews and Jon Jones.

It's a young team.

They address their quarterback, they address their tight end situation, they got better on defense and signed the best defensive player. And they made the playoffs.

If that's not rebuilding I'm not sure what is? But also how long do you think the rebuild is supposed to last? If you don't think that was a rebuild then you essentially believe we're already in year five of the rebuild.

That is what fans say, most OCs are looking for a job that will get them noticed quickly for the next HC opening. With as much uncertainty as there is around the Offense talent wise, it just isn't a prime spot to land.
That's why this hire is a hit. Meets all of Mayo's goals and the dude, apparently, doesn't have a huge ego. Perfect.

We've seen enough drama with the coaching staff these past few seasons.

More ****ing ******** from this guy. Patriots were top 3 oldest team in '23.

So how much losing is acceptable to you before we move on from "patriot fans are spoiled brats" to "Patriots don't know what they're doing?"

This idea that we're supposed to just accept the losing because winning is really hard is crazy.

Since their last Superbowl they have only had two playoff seasons and both those playoff seasons they were horrendous for half the year.

The Patriots have done a lot of losing since 2019.
Cousin, Kind of depressing and yes we are spoiled Fans. Mayo might be a management favorite but get ready for another 4-13 season. Unfortunately Mayo will be done before his contract is over. I love BK but his "gut feeling" that Mayo may be successful might not work out. I hope I am wrong on all counts.

No OL no WR and we are trying to invent a QB savior out of any of the top three? We have got Groh and Wolfe (purely nepotism) who were involved in our roster the last few years.....they will be at it again. Are they blaeless? Our new QB will be a pinata for the next three years or so if they survive.

Pick #3 wisely . MHJ has the talent to get open which our WR have not been able to do, Perhaps get blue chip OL help. Trade down to build or do something, but to sacrafice the very iffey created star QB at #3, please tell me what am I missing?

Hold your nose and take a flyer on Wilson for a few years with some added pieces like Boles and Juedy and the Brocos paying some cash . Look at Baker Mayfield Cousins might be too expensive but you can get a QB in Round two. Way too much hype on top three QBs.

My thoughts anyway.

Who ever the Pats had looking for FA WRs these last few years has been sleeping on the job.

The Browns Amari Cooper done blowed up over yonder. Dude is the real deal.Virtually every weekend highlights had him making a big time play.

It was also for an offense being run by the withered remains of Joe Flacco. But yes, let's blame the guy who doesn't call the plays or the guy who threw the interception.

It feels like one of those:

"The Browns were 10th in the league in scoring despite starting five different QBs and losing their best offensive player in Chubb. Great job by Stefansky!"

"The offense was old and easily predictable by Houston in the playoffs. Alex Van Pelt has GOT to go!"

Jumbo is the mascot for Tufts University, the sports teams play under that name, and many “Tuftonians” refer to our fellow alumni, etc. as such (because “Tuftonians” is weird). It originated with P.T. Barnum who was a significant donor to Tufts, including donating the stuffed carcass of Jumbo the Elephant (one of the most popular attractions of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus). Sadly the carcass was consumed in a fire in the 1970s, except for a small remnant of a tusk.

There have apparently been a few Jumbod that have made it to the NFL as coaches, the only players I can recall are a running back in the 1970s (I can't remember his name) and Methuen's own Mark Buben. So it's fun for me to think that a Jumbo will be coaching the Pats. I think one of Kraft's kids (maybe Dan) is also a Jumbo.

I tagged @PatsWickedPissah because, like me, he has shared that he is an alumnus of the College of Engineering. Tufts has generally sucked at football, but for a while was great in sailing. It was pretty good for learning also.
My wife and I have some connections to Tufts. We have a cousin who's a dentist and went there and we also donated to Tufts in the name of a family friend who passed away a few years ago. He was a heart specialist from Medford who taught a class there. And an odd thing happened after we made that donation. There's also a doctor who graduated from Tufts with the same name as mine and even the same middle initial. After we made that donation I started getting class reunion mail that was meant for him. I ended up calling his office and letting them know so he'd get his mail from Tufts. And now, to top it all off, our youngest son has that doctor as his PCP.

The funny thing is that both of our sons went to multiple colleges and neither one of them has the same attachments to their schools as you and the other Jumbos have about Tufts. They're not into their HS reunions either.

I can watch the pressers again after a few years off. All Belichick did in his was piss me off.

I tamped down my expectations in 2020. 4-13 was horrible. But I was prepared for 6-11. When you don't hit on your QB, you can expect a lot of 6-11. No matter who the coach is.
Honestly I was optimistic because I had seen some form of winning football from Mac as a rookie. Week 1 he played well in the 2nd quarter, then it all fell apart the season.

3 observations.

1 Van Pelt was an NFL QB for 11 years. I don't know the guy from Adam, but who better to relate to a QB in the trenches today.

2 Van Pelt coached Rodgers and evidently they had a great relationship. Perhaps Van Pelts inside knowledge of AR will benefit the Pats defense in some way.

3 Former Browns and Van Pelt QB Case Keenum is a FA in 2024. Familiar with the offense and a Vet who can win you a game or 2. Keenum could be the Vet QB that gets signed to the Pats roster.

I gotta tell you man, this whole "not desirable" mantra that gets repeated here... don't get it. Jobs are generally open because the previous regime failed. Rare is it that Bill Walsh retires and George Seifert takes over and the train keeps going. Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer. I can't think of a lot more.

This is a good if not great ownership, with a storied franchise with a rich history of winning. This is not the Jete, the Dan Snyder Redskins, the cheap Spanos folks in San Diego LA, Tepper in Carolina or bowl cut Davis with the quick hook in Vegas. This is one of the pillars in the NFL. Right there with the Steelers, 49ers and Cowboys. You can bet that guys want to be here.

Simply put, guys want to coach in the NFL, and this is one of the better franchises, regardless of what Felger and his ilk say.
Man, great, great post thank you for that. Your absolutely correct! We have one thr best franchises in football. Absolutely agree with everything you've mentioned. Feels like Mayo got the right person for the job knowing he's bringing in a new QB.

What did Houston have before they drafted Stroud? They were as much of a dumpster fire as the Pats offense but they managed to get a young OC from Shanahan's staff.

Nobody who has an option elsewhere wants to come here. This place has become toxic.

They were toxic the last two seasons, they aren’t any more.

You are correct that Bailey Jones are not the guys but why give up draft up draft capital for a 1 year bridge because his 5th year option will be more expensive than signing a 1-2 year bridge FA QB. Also, I am not convinced that Fields is any better than Brissett/Trod Taylor.
You make good sense. I'm just looking at the possibility of if it happened. Chances are it won't, the idea is interesting becuase Chicago is like going to take another QB in the draft this year. So fields could be had for a later round pick I'd imagine. However it's all just theorizing.
