Patriots new OC - Alex Van Pelt

Now sure this is what I expected, but Van Pelt's experience tips the balance somewhat. As much as I hoped for a McVay protégé, from what I read he is at least a west coast offense type of guy. He is 53 years old and been involved in coaching for almost 20 years, give the guy a chance for certain his hiring will probably improve our lackluster offense.
Still think they need a dedicated Passing game coordinator/QB Coach..

Never thought I would ever see the day the Patriots would go west coast offense. It will be interesting to see how much this will help the players since WC philosophy is to ignore coverage and just run the route you're called to run, whether it's man or zone.

Has anyone heard anything about the QB coaching vacancy? The initial searches were all coordinator related... Now that those roles have been filled, it's position coach time...

Last year BoB was the OC/QB coach... Think Van Pelt will fill both roles or will the Pats bring in a new position coach?

Lot of peeps are of the opinion that the size of the coaching staff needs to expanded... But in this specific instance are we better off keeping those two roles combined?

No. Rookie QB and/or Mac in the house, you will need someone to focus on mechanics, etc. Unless you get someone else to call the plays instead of AVP.

Hope they bring in a combo passing game coordinator/QB coach to complement Van Pelt..
This team has fallen so far behind offensively they need a lot of football minds to bring this team forward..

Oh boy the very thing we were running from old and out dated concepts have returned. I am looking to see who's our TE and QB Coaches. Uninspiring players on Offense now OC with out dated concepts misery loves company nice start Mayo.

I think Van Pelt is fine. They absolutely needed an experienced senior calm hand to help Mayo out. Someone who would not undermine him and has a good relationship with front office.
This team is going to be bad this year no matter who they hired.
Bill left this team in disastrous shape. Now Van Pelt has to clean up the mess.
No elite experienced OC was coming here.
I think we should give the guy a chance.
I did not want Caley
The Pats needed to get away from hiring OCs who rose to fame because of Brady.

BOB sucked if you ask me. What a bland boring offense he calls.

Unless. -- were these potential OCs being told the job is Mac Jones's?
Van Pelt did not call plays in Cleveland. Stefanski did.

When Stefanski had the Covid, Van Pelt filled in a couple of games as OC. So, the NE job is actually a promotion for Van Pelt and Im glad that he is bringing the Browns offense to NE after that 5hit show offense last season.

It seems to me that Van Pelt was the Browns QB coach. Which is what a beaten down and broken QB needs if you happen to have one on your roster.

I'm ok with this.

Does well with young QBs

Likes his running game

Values the WR position

Values the TE

Runs the West Coast

Likes fullbacks

Experienced

Needs talent which on this team is almost non-existent

I like the posters who think Bill sucked and can look at the new coaching staff and think anything positive.
I like the posters who love Bill and are hoping the Pats fail.
Bill's team was 4-13 last year and Van Pelts' team was 11-6.
Bill's team missed the playoffs and Van Pelts' team made it.
Bill is too old and Van Pelt is younger.
Bill is out of a job and Van Pelt is employed.

Hearing that Cleveland higher ups didn’t want him because of Watson disappointing. Well obviously he would take some time after being away from the game nearly 2 years. And he was starting to play very well right before the injury.

This is still hard to pass judgement on or get excited about. We were in a tough spot so expecting a top commodity to come here was wishful thinking. Hoping for the best, we DID need a qb coach … grooming the next qb will be the priority so thats there.

I'm with you on all but Fields. This is not the time to be giving away assets. Pick a bridge QB out of the >30 available, dump Mac, re-sign Rourke or Zappe based on best fit to new system, draft a QB w/ #3.
Here is why I'm on the fields idea. Mac and Zapp aren't for this team. They aren't the type of leaders that you need at the QB position, they are adversaries with each other, they aren't going to be able to help along the new draft pick. They both see themselves as starting QBs . So trade for fields, still take the QB, get the LT at 34, and fill in the rest of the needs in the later rounds and FA. Fields could be a better bridge than Mac or Zapp could be. They both are distressed assets. Now if Van pelt can somehow fix Mac or Zapp wich I doubt then we are playing with house money.

Makes no sense.

Watson lasted 6 games. Chubb lasted 2 games. The Browns used 5 different QBs in 2023 and made the post season.

I love Van Pelts reaction to being fired. "On to the next job"
