Patriots Daily News Thread Patriots Monday 12/4/23

Daily news threads with relevant news, stories, video, or additional content around the team. Feel free to contribute anything interesting you come across as well, which will hopefully make these helpful for people to keep up with what's going on with the team by having all the news in one place.

The Jimmy G ship has sailed. He'd be too expensive to be a mentoring #2.
And otherwise, he's only played 2 full seasons in his 10 year career. You can't trust him to stay on the field.

I like my new idea of trading for Jake Browning to be QB1. (draft Harrison #1, draft QB in 2nd rd, or keep Mac on rookie deal as #2)
**Along with hiring Brian Callahan as the new HC/OC.

I thought Bill's answers to Phil Perry's questions at the 4:15 mark here were interesting. Phil essentially asks about why Zappe started now and if he's looked good all year or he just now won the job. In a roundabout way Bill says he's always looked as good as he does now. So then Phil says well if he's always looked this good then why not make the move earlier considering the team's record? The interesting piece is that Bill starts to say "We gave Mac his chance" but then catches himself and changes his wording to say he gave Mac "the opportunity to work through his progression with the offense, and we haven't had a lot of production so we thought Bailey deserved a chance." I think that is curious because it points toward the idea that Mac basically was being given every opportunity to prove it until it was abundantly clear he just sucks and they pulled the plug.

yeah, but "Bailey looked as good as he does"... doesn't mean he's good. He sucks too.
That's fine that he threw a few good long balls (that were mostly dropped) - that's the exact same as Mac.
He also took a bunch of stupid sacks (like Mac), and was horribly inaccurate in the short easy throws (much worse than Mac).
They are super similar. It's just Mac's mind has already been completely f'd by BB, and Zappe is still waiting to get fully broken.
Enough with this lesson in insanity.

Hard disagree on your evaluation there. If you think Mac throws a few good long balls that get dropped each game I can't say I agree. I also can't agree that Zappe took any "stupid sacks" - he was fairly elusive and when he did take the sack it was usually the smart play. I can agree that he was inaccurate in the short game early on, which is different from Mac. But I thought that improved a bit later.

It's ridiculous that you have ROOKIES "on the bubble" when they really haven't been given a chance.
Wise has been one of the most consistently good D-linemen for the past 3 years. Yet, you think he's a bubble guy?

You also forgot Special teams:
Baringer, Cardona, Board, Ryland, Schooler,

Guys you didn't mention who are under contract for next year and SHOULD be brought back:
Isaiah Bolden, Jake Andrews, JaMychal Hasty, Marte Mapu, Tyquan Thornton, Godchaux, Shaun Wade, Sam Roberts,

Guys I'd restructure or CUT:
Parker, J.C. Jackson, Smith-Schuster, Guy, Phillips, Anderson

Pats need Bookend OTs. There isn't S**T in Free Agency next season for OT so that means the draft. @BaconGrundleCandy assures me that there is good value for OT for the 2nd & 3rd rounds. So I could go for Marvin Harrison Jr unless someone offers us 2 picks and then some for #2 or #3 (wherever the Pats end up). Mac Jones will likely be traded. TB, CLE, LAR, or SEA could be destinations for Mac.

ReSign: Bourne, Pharoah Brown, Jennings, Dugger, Onwenu, Henry.

Let Walk: Trent Brown, Josh Uche Reiff, Gesicki, Slater, Bryant, Mills, Cody Davis, Ty Mongomery, Reagor,

In free agency, I'd look for the following:
Free Safety Type that's an excellent field commander. Not sure if Xavier McKinney Fits this or not. Kamren Curl, Jordan Fuller, DeShon Elliott
RB to replace Zeke if he moves on. Akers, Elliot, Moss
IDL - Someone who is more of a 2-down NT. DJ Reader, Leki Fotu,
CB - Jaylon Johnson, Kendall Fuller, Herndon, Keisean Nixon,
TE - Dalton Schultz, Drew Sample
WR - (Only if they didn't take MHJ), Marquise Brown, Michael Pittman, Tee Higgins
QB - Josh Dobbs, Gardner Minshew, Baker Mayfield

People will notice I don't have EDGE down. that's because with Judon, White, Jennings, and Wise, I think the Pats have a solid rotation. I think adding via the draft might be the better option, though I haven't looked at the depth there.
Boy, you came in pretty hot...
I listed "core guys" - that are must-keeps as the heart of the team. Of course there's a bunch of others that we'll keep, and ST players, etc...
Bubble just meant - not essential to retain (depending how Free Agency goes, etc)

So, not so "hard" of a disagree?

Let's talk future on a Patriots Monday...
1. BB walks into sunset. Maybe let Groh become GM? Or bring back Ziegler.
- Maybe BOB as HC, or stay as OC to keep some continuity for most offensive players.
- Maybe Mayo as HC, or stay as true/only DC
2. If BOB bolts, then hire young O-minded HC
3. QB - Draft Williams, Penix, Daniels - I don't care which... it's all a crapshoot
- Keep Cunningham as a #2/3
- Sign a Vet with the same style who can mentor... CRAZY idea - RGIII (he could have the same resurgence Vick did in Philly)
- Or Dobbs, Bridgewater, Minshew, Mayfield

Both of those incompetent toadies ****ing Suck. Either promote Eliot the Wolf to GM or hire a Complete Outsider.

1: Bad pass

2: Best of the game

3: All-around Garbage

4: Terrible decision by Zappy with BoneyT wide open for the first down, but got lucky with the DPI

5: Good catch, risky throw

6: Should've better-positioned his body in front of the CB

7: Drop

Mapu can’t come up and meet guards at the line of scrimmage and shed them like Bentley, he’s a strong safety not a linebacker.

Duggar is in a contract year, that’s why you draft his potential replacement.

Wrong, and wrong.

I hate it even more if he's supposed to a Dugger replacement.
Drafting a replacement is smart, it potentially covers you in case they leave, it shows the player they can be replaced in negotiations.

I’d love for them to extend Duggar, he might get an offer to good to beat.

Dugger will out price himself next season.

McPoo wouldn't play the same stout, run-stopping ILB role here that Bentley & Tavai do. His game is outside, in space, where he can run & chase sideline to sideline, and cover RBs & TEs before the QB can target them. He can absolutely play an OLB role here, especially while he becomes more acclimated to seeing the game from a deeper POV...

And you simply do NOT use the 76TH overall pick on somebody with McPoo's background just because you're afraid of losing a... Strong Safety... the Least critical position in the defensive backfield... and one where we already have a bit of depth compared to other positions on defense, or on the team as a whole. Indefensible pick.

Marte Mapu weighed 217 pounds at the NFL combine.

You want me to believe he deserves snaps over Kyle Duggar, who weighs 222 pounds and Jabrill Peppers who weighs 217 pounds, when Mapu is already getting as many snaps as Adrian Phillips... and you think slapping the title "LB" on him makes him "bigger" or better than these < guys?

It doesn't.... and he isn't.

You don't take Duggar or Peppers off the field for Mapu, it doesn't make him bad... it means there's really good players ahead of him.
