Patriots are signing WR Michael Jenkins

And I'm saying that if Michael Jenkins is playing the Hernandez Role because Hernandez is gone, you can stick a fork in the season, because he's not anything approaching a credible backup for Hernandez..

Dear Deus, Congratulations on your 35,000 posts. I didn't say Jenkins is a credible long-term backup to Hernandez. No one is which is a problem. You obviously will not have Jenkins on the field for 90% of snaps like Hernandez will be. If Hernandez is out for a length of time, you'll have to adjust the entire offense by going to a 3 receiver set up like they did last year or going with 2 bigger tight ends.

My point was one role Jenkins might fill is being a gameday backup for Hernandez. Once the gameplan is installed and the 46 man roster is set, it's not so easy sometimes to adjust things on the fly. Given the huge part Hernandez is in this offense mostly because of his pass catching ability, it would be easier to replace him for a quarter or a game with a big receiver like Jenkins than say Fells or Hooman.

FWIW I've read that "The Porcelain Italian" is actually "The Porcelain Mexican". So you can say he's a better version of Greg Salas. But the Amendola surname originates from Italy so that's where the confusion comes from. DA probably still has Italian ancestory but I digress.

Also to anyone suggesting Jenkins is Lloyd's equal, wake me up when Jenkins has a season anywhere close to what Lloyd did with Kyle Orton throwing to him in 2010. Hell, let me know when he approaches what Lloyd did LAST season.

I think Mike Jenkins can still ball. Sure he can't get the separation from DBs but he's big and can catch. I think he breaks camp with the pats. Good signing.

oh boy reche jenkins

Honestly, if Jenkins comes in and produces 61 for 740 and 4 TDs like Caldwell did for us, I would be pretty surprised.

Donald Jones and Mike Jenkins = Reche Caldwell and Doug Gabriel.

I have yet to grasp the outrage that some of you have. Pats signed a WR to compete for camp, THAT's IT. Nowhere in the official statement did it say that Jenkins is a replacement for X Y or Z. I suspect everything has to do with us not having signed an impact WR that we are all expecting. Off-season is NOT over, can we all wait until most moves are made before freaking out? If this is what we have in TC I will join the critics but until that happens I am willing to wait. Patience is a virtue.

Moves that can still happen?

Emmanuel Sanders of the Stleers and a draft pick WR. Honestly this team doesn't need anymore then that given they are planning to use a combination of Gronk,Hernandez,Ballard,Amendola, Ridley on almost every play if not every play. Now add Sanders to that and the draft pick what more do you want?

Everyone needs to take a deep breath.

Translation: Anyone not enthralled with these two dented can WRs is an unenlightened mouth foaming lunatic.

Too much?

You could be right but there is a fine line between optimism and spin as it pertains to Jenkins and Jones.

Whatever you used for translating let you down. That's not it at all. But that is what you want it to be. I'd suggest you read it again unbiased. Spin? Nope but I understand some people are out for blood. Let me help so you don't have to go back:

Don't really see him making the team. He's suppose to be a very good run blocker so hopefully he makes it.

Ususally they do this...after they already have a full starting roster.

The Pats don't even have this!

It's like doing the whole thing ass backwards.

But yeah, the depth thing.

you got that straight from Roto World...LaCanfora posted that....Jenkins ran a 4.45 on his Pro Day...his combine wasn't listed but a 4.6 average 40 was associated with him at the combine for some reason...here's a clip of him this past season in Minny...he's big...and has good body control as evidenced by this small clip....perhaps the Pats can do better but what is the harm in bringing in a veteran who has clips of Christian Ponder throwing him the ball as a yardstick?

Michael Jenkins 35-Yard Catch vs. Buffalo

That 4.45 was 8 years and a whole world of unrealized promise ago. I know people were clamoring to bring in David Nelson and Jenkins is the same type of guy (big, slow receiver who might be useful in the red zone).

Donald Jones at least has home run potential and some promise, but we're talking a likely ceiling of 2001 David Patten and that's a best-case scenario.

This leads me to a related question:

Qb - Brady
RB - Ridley
3rd down RB - Vereen (hopefully he's ready), Washington (Hopefully he's not needed)
TE1 - Gronk
TE2 - Hernandez
OLT - Solder
OLG - Mankins
C - Wendel/Connolly
ORG - Connolly/Cannon
ORT - Vollmer
WR2 - The porcelain Italian
WR1 - TBD
WR3 - TBD

CB1 - Talib
CB2 - Dennard
CB3 - Arrington
S1 - McCourty
S2, S3 - Wilson/Wilson/Gregory
OLB - Hightower
OLB - Mayo
MLB - Spikes
DT - Wilfork
DE - Jones
DT - TBD
DE - TBD

With the moves that have been made, could we possibly see BB go WR/WR in the first two rounds? If you look at Wilson/Wilson/Gregory as a viable safety group lining up next to McCourty/Dennard/Talib/Arrington (I'm not sold, but hey....), isn't the team largely down to needing WR/DL for the upcoming season, in terms of starting level players?

I envision our end product at WR being a trio of: Keenan Allen/Deandre Hopkins (BB's first first round WR), the porcelain italian, and Emmanuel Sanders. Do I trust it? Hell no. Does it have great potential and it would be infused with youth for once? Hell yes.

DT: I say we just live with Wilfork, Love/Deaderick, and Armstead/Francis on passing downs. Manxman made a great point that at pick 29, you aren't getting a purebread DT. Is a late 1st round DT really going to be that much better than 3rd year Love/Deaderick?

DE: Ninkovich is a pretty good #2 DE. Ideally you want a much bigger guy than a 255 pound DE, so maybe Armstead can over take him. Still, 8 sacks, 6 FFs, and versatility make him a starting caliber player. If we sign Abraham, this position is set.

So yeah, it would be shocking, but two WRs in the first two rounds could happen. I think a more realistic scenario is BB trades up to 22, hopping the Vikings and Texans and landing whomever he prefers of Allen/Hopkins.

What are you going to use to move up, your 2nd or your 2 7ths because Pittsburgh will have your 3rd round pick if Sanders is signed?

I would be THRILLED with a Patten ceiling. Good enough for a Lombardi.

Molasses Mike huh

well maybe its beacause he is sweet and not because he's slow!

IMO low risk signing for vet minimum obviously and old 1st round guy never quite lived up to potential....but was it because of him or who/where he played. Many of those teams were run heavy. I dont expect him to be Moss and neither should you he is alot closer to Brandon Lloyd than people think. Almost like we are playing moneyball at the WR position next year....

Yes, I could see Belichick drafting 2 WR's in the first 2 rounds. More likely is 2 WR's in the first 3 rounds, one of which may be using a 3rd for Sanders. We have the free agent money to upgrade the DL and bring in more competition at CB, and still bring in JAGS and minot free agents (like Edelman and/or Lloyd).

Already Lloyd and Sanders are available. According to rotoworld, Davone Bess may be available soon. Davone Bess - Miami Dolphins - 2013 Player Profile - Rotoworld.com

"The Palm Beach Post considers Davone Bess the Dolphins' No. 1 veteran in danger of being cut.
Bess and his non-guaranteed $2.63 million salary have been squarely on the bubble since the Dolphins signed Brandon Gibson. Cutting Bess would clear $2.7 million in cap space. Beat writer Ben Volin wouldn't be "shocked" if Bess was traded before or during the draft. It's getting harder to envision Bess in a Dolphins uniform come Week 1. Mar 29 - 11:25 AM"

Just be patient guys. We will have another proven outside threat by week 1. Until then don't wet your panties over low risk moderate reward depth signings like this.

Bess is a slot receiver so he wouldn't be the best fit when outside receiver is the glaring need.

Dang, good point. We need a Mallett trade to go down for more flexibility in this draft. I doubt Allen or Hopkins are available at 29.
