Didn't Rob and Rex Ryan work with Buddy on the same team? Don't recall that being a huge controversy. Or maybe they didn't.
Yes. When Buddy was with AZ.

It's not a controversy at all.

There are 100s of situations where the son is an assistant while the dad has a higher position.

Some people complain just to complain around here.

Still unhappy with how last season ended on the defensive side and I think Steve should have been the fall guy for that - but if injuries to guys like Judon are the real reason why that happened then I feel better about it. Let's see what happens. If it works maybe we'll see more teams adopt this coaching model.

I think blaming OC/DC is always a copout.

The talent on the D was overrated from Day 1.

They shut down crappy offensive teams and good ones crushed them.

Or fooled by a really bad weather game. I know I was.

All season couldn't stop the run and couldn't make a key stop when they needed one. If they could they would have won the division.

Agree.

...which means they weren't that good to begin with.

Very similar pattern to 2019.

They were also pretty banged up in the secondary that day. Not sure it would have mattered in the end (it takes a lot of injuries to go from winning a game to losing by 30), but after Jackson the three highest snap count CBs were JJ Williams, Myles Bryant, and Justin Bethel. So it didn't matter if JC was taking out his man, there was always going to be an easy matchup for Allen to exploit. Dugger having a clubbed hand probably didn't help much either.

It remains to be seen how this secondary will shake out, but I think the hope is that even though they won't be as talented at CB1, all three of those other guys will be upgraded.

Outside1: Mills < Jackson
Outside2: Butler/Jack Jones/Mitchell > JJ Williams
Slot: Jon Jones > Bryant
Depth1: Butler/Jack Jones/Mitchell > Bethel/Ross/Bausby

A lot to sort out, but that's the hope.

Yea they were banged up. Bryant should never had been playing ~40 snaps a game. Nice player but that is way too many for him. Same with Bentley. Again nice player but hes a reserve LB

Since Flo left they've finished #1, #7, #2 in points against.

The best DC on the planet is the HC. Baby Bill and Mayo carry out the orders.

It would be unwise to F with it.

their best defensive showing last year was against Timmy and the Bucs as well as the first Bills game

The first Bills game has an obvious asterisk.

The defense was good against the Bucs. Best defensive showing has to be the shutout in Atlanta. Pitts and Gage didn't do a lot.

I discount the Bills game a bit as it was aided by the weather.

Bucs game - Their best effort last year. Although I think Tom was a bit too amped and they were missing Gronk.

I definitely believe that there is more to Nick Caley.

Bill is OC, DC, STC.

I agree that the weather was obviously a major factor in why we won the Bills game.

If the Bucs and Pats end up in the same place in their divisions this year, Tampa is coming to NE in 2023...I can't see Timmy sticking around in Tampa if that's the case. They were missing Gronk that game, but we were missing Trent Brown as well as a few others. All in all, it was a great showing by the D. People on this board thought the Bucs were going to put up 40 on us.

Too bad Mac never got the chance to go for it on 4th and 3 at the end. I have no doubt he would have converted.

Agreed. Lavonte David block on Mac's 3rd down attempt saved the game for them. We had a receiver wide open and would have gotten us into FG range.
