I relish that Mayo and the Pats would ketchup to each other, mustard their resources and solve this salary pickle.

They both receive my highest condiments.

Classy player who doesn't hotdog it.

If Pats do not pick up option in 2016 Mayo will then become an UFA and be eligible for 2017 comp pick calculations

Somewhat concerned that NFL may disallow this in future but I believe a couple other well run franchises do this option move also, so perhaps it won't have the votes.

Love that mayo took a very team friendly deal despite having all the leverage at this point.

I hope he is able to have a good year, and we keep him around for a few more after this one. He's not as crucial as he once was, what with hightower and collins taking huge steps up the last couple of years, but mayo is still a top tier LB in the league.
Having all the leverage? In what way? Coming off two straight injury curtailed seasons doesn't exactly spell leverage to me, especially when Collins and Hightower played so well in his absence.

I was thinking that this was going to happen, although I expected it sooner. It will be interesting to get the new numbers.

I wonder what the NFLPA thinks of such things?

To be honest Mayo had 0 gtd money in 2017, and only 2.4 in 2016. Lets see if its a pay cut or a Brady/ JJ WAtt kind of deal - I love Brady and he is UNDERPAID because he is the GOAT - but he never took a pay cut.

Great news. While the 2015 number is important. The 2016 and 2017 are just ad with collins/solder/hightower and jones looking for deals.

Mixed. Maybe it motivates clubs to cut vets but it also gets an extra new player drafted higher and paid more than he woulda been as a UDFA since the club gets > 7 picks that are paid higher than UDFAs.

I figured those two implications. I was just wondering where the NFLPA actually stood on the matter, or if they would even take a stance.

As an aside, does this mean he's passed his physical?

This alone reminds us what a big loss Mayo would have been. Cannot wait to see his skill and leadership added to our budding front 7 hopefully for a full season.

The Pats don't tend to do moves like this unless there is a corresponding move that cost money coming down the pipeline.

Maybe something will happen on draft day as a lot of you are already thinking.

I doubt they would ask him to do this then just sit on it. Not how they work.

A hugely attractive deal from the Patriots point of view.
$4mm cap savings
Opportunity to gain a compensatory pick

Given the relationship, I would guess that the team picks up the option - under almost any scenario other than retirement.

That savings can also facilitate a resigning of Jones, Hightower, Collins, or Solder should they want to offer a signing bonus with 2015 implications in an extension, or it can enable a trade.

Pretty much. Next year, the mysterious formula will change to exclude Revis, Wilfork, and Browner. It will be the newest example of the Patriots breaking a rule before the rule exists.
