Patriots Add Depth With Two Bigger Wide Receivers, Quick Analysis

Steve Balestrieri

It seems likely to me that at least one of these two are cut before the end of this week to be replaced by an OT. This seems to be mostly an extended "tryout" for both of them, so it's not outside the realm of possibility that both are gone again by Wednesday.

Special teams could be a deciding factor. It looks like Darboh plays 3 units and had 159 ST snaps last year.

agreed. quite expensive tryout though - two 53 roster spots.

first to come back should be Bolden bc he's playing week 1 id guess.
Tobin - if he is the choice - can come back later unless there's another twist with T.Brown.
Id be surprised if he can't go week 1 after they went so thin at OL . then again nothing's surprising me anymore in this strange roster offseason..

As I noted in another thread, the advantage to the Pats with putting the claimed guys directly onto the 53-man is that is preserves their current contracts. Both are signed through 2020 as it stands. If one works out well, they'll already have the guy under their control (cheap) for three seasons.

If they'd been put on the PS instead, they'd effectively have become free agents.

I think it’s bolden that will replace one this week because we only need 7 game day OL. The 8th guyvwould be inactive while bolden would be playing st

I’ve come to the conclusion that another cut or IR assignment might be coming to clear space for an 8th O lineman. My current guess is Matt Slater is IRd to heal the hamstring injury that effected him last season and throughout training camp.

The Patriots changed their plan to wait and IR Izzo after 4 pm to add both receivers to the roster so it appears they were pleased to be awarded both. Hansen probably has a leg up to play this week as he’s likely more familiar with the Patriots offense having played on the Jets scout team preparing for both Patriot-Jets games last season.

Hansen and Darboh look like intriguing prospects in the video I’ve seen. Both exhibit excellent body control and run after catch ability which make them good fits for the Patriots’ offense. Now they just have to learn the offense and earn Brady’s trust to be contributors this season.

Wouldn't they be subject to ERFA and UDFA anyway so you'd still likely retain them if you wanted. Or is this not the same for practice squad guys?

According to the article, both of them struggle to gain separation from defenders.

If they do not step on my tail, I will see what I can do to help them improve.

One of the things I've been thinking about is the punt return situation. That brought me back to Amendola and Edelman. I could be wrong, but I believe that neither of them returned punts in college. Yet they were two of the best that the Patriots have ever had..

What's interesting about both Darboh and Hansen are the similarities in their Shuttle and 3-come to Amendola.

Darboh
Shuttle - 4.27
3 cont - 6.81

Hansen -
Shuttle - 4.13
3 cone - 6.74

Amendola
Shuttle- 4.25
3 Cone - 6.81

It could be that BB intends to try them out as punt returners...

Quick analysis:

Patriots decided to go the hail Mary route with WRs that two WR-desperate teams cut loose. Odds are that the Patriots will also end up cutting them loose, soon enough.

Wish they hadn’t gone that route. We need to hope edelman, hogan, and gronk stay healthy the whole season.

Id be surprised if any of the two plays week 1. Id guess its more of insurance move and tryout for possible future. Then again Floyd was thrown into the fire quickly . but he had proven NFL production and plenty of experience.

With Richards and M.Flowers gone I really hope im not wrong thinking Ebner and Slater must be ready to go. Duke Dawson would be my IR-R candidate at this point.

Both Darboh and Hansen signed 4-year contracts when they were drafted, so no RFA or ERFA for them. RFA and ERFA restrictions apply only to guys who originally signed 3-year contracts when they first entered the league.

When a player is waived and clears waivers, his previous contract is null-and-void, and he becomes a free agent (although the RFA and ERFA restrictions still apply). If he signs on with a practice squad, that's a week-to-week deal and, if another team makes him an contract offer, he's free to accept is and switch teams - effectively a free agent.

"Bill, these guys can make a difference... we crunched the numbers..."

JAG or less.... IMO.

*shrug* it's only money

"...One of the things McDaniels and the Patriots as a whole are good at is, adapting a player and playing to his strengths rather than trying to force him to adapt to a rigid system...."

This system is the dictionary definition of Rigid; that's why so few WRs have adapted to it.

less I think

To me, a JAG is a serviceable veteran backup player, like Schwenke or Waddle.
To me, a JAG is just a body taking up space, like GeeNo Gruesome or Elandon Waivers. Easily replaceable, and the sooner the better.
