Patriots about to make a BIG mistake?

Lost in that 6-of-11 for 47 yards is the fact that he went 5-of-7 (71.4%) in the first half with his 47yds. He went 1-of-4 for 0 yards in the second half with two throwaways.

After watching it, one of those second-half incompletions was obviously the drop on the deep ball to Baker, which would have been an unreal play had they completed it.

So there's definitely some context there.

Still, when it comes to him being out there to start the season, I thought Chris Hogan summed it up perfectly in the thing I wrote today:

“Dude, it’s the fricking preseason,” said Hogan. “He’s seeing cover three, cover two, cover four, man, there’s no multiple blitzes, man/zone, we’re not talking about that. Week one, that s**t is coming, right? And if you put Drake out there, it’s going to be a fricking field day of blitzes just to see if he can handle it. And you don’t want to do that to the kid.”

“Let Jacoby handle it. He’s seen it. And if Jacoby messes up, ‘All right, let’s go back and watch film,’ and Drake, again, mental reps are huge. Like, see it. ‘All right, they rolled here, they did this, they went from man to zone, they sent the corner,’ you’ve got to be able to see all this in real-time. And like you said, we don’t want to do week one and week two and then have to yank him.”

As much as I'd like to see Maye, I would have to agree with him and think it makes sense for Maye to sit a few weeks and see in real-time what he'll be dealing with so that he's a little more ready when his time does finally come.

Good material as always Ian. After watching camp and all the reports worth reading. I believe the difference is Maye's improvement is captivating the staff. I pay attention to tone.. Mayo's tone was totally on Brissett being the starter at the beginning of camp now There has been a shift. I really don't know what the real edge he would have by being entered in week 4,7 or 9. Brissett has dropped off and maye has steadily improved. This is exactly what you want to see in your 3rd pick. Yes Brissett has knowledge of the system and is the pro. However Maye's the talented QB, and I just believe his abilities could elevate this team and really help the line. We are rebuilding wether it's Drake or Jacoby starting. If we want to attract FAs in 2025 then I believe drakes our best option to do so.

I have not watched preseason in years and this year was no exception. Social media was blowing up with Maye performance and then I looked up the numbers and nothing special at all - in fact less than average.

I agree they are trying to build the narrative to start Maye which would be a bad idea. He will start at some point though this year if we are less than .500.

Pick any game on the schedule. Maye will help you win that game more than Jacoby. Not sure what else there is to discuss.

Everyone here in NC would laugh at any suggestion is confidence could be ruined. He gets his butt kicked he's working harder, gets better, and pushes himself even more, that's his personality. Uber-competitor.

You can't ruin him and he's the better QB, this is not a hard choice unless you are playing for draft position.

Anyone touting the stats from the last game as some indication of anything meaningful are way off, watch the TAPE! Baker had 3 balls hit him in both hands. He could be 9 for 11 with 2 throwaways, for 127 yards and a running TD, make you feel better? Stats? Look at the tape!

Nix and Daniels are worse than Maye, yet they are starting for bad teams.

If Maye had turned in the performance Nix did in his last game everyone who be raving about him.

It's been a theory of mine for the last several seasons that the Patriots have an internal policy of telegraphing every big move they make by teasing it through the Boston sports media before it happens. This allows them to gauge fans initial response and then proceed to build popular momentum for any big move so that it's palatable to the fanbase by the time it happens. This way ownership takes minimal criticism and the all important bottom line remains unimpacted.
I'll leave historical examples of this behavior for another thread, because what I really want to talk about is the 180 the media pulled after the Eagles preseason game...

Every other article I've read out of Boston Media outlets (and sports radio) is favorably reciting the same talking points about Drake Maye's performance against the Eagles and his "progression" in the "competition" for QB 1. If you only read the media and didn't watch the game you'd think he must have had an exceptional outing.

REALITY: Maye went 6/11 throwing for 47 yards, with no TD's, no Int's, and took a sack. He averaged 4.3 yards per passing attempt and had a QB rating of... 65.3 He RAN the ball 4 times and scored a touchdown... This was in a preseason game where every defense is vanilla and no one is game-planning and to put it into perspective our more-than-likely starter put up a stat line reminiscent of Tim Tebow...

Drake Maye is going to start... He's going to start this season... And he'll probably start in the first four weeks of the season (potentially game 1). I say this just based on what the media and now Jerod Mayo have started to intimate, because I've seen this media about-face and blitz too many times in the last three years to expect anything but follow through...

I can't overstate how big a mistake this would be... This Rookie QB should be brought along as the final complimentary piece of an already seasoned offense, not asked to carry the worst offensive line and receiving group in the NFL mere months after battling the likes Campbell, Appalachian state, and Duke...

What do you think about him starting this season - or even game 1?
Every down he plays accelerates his development. He should play every down this year.

Peyton was an interception machine in year 1, but that was a big outlier for him. Maye has actually been compared to Peyton a lot by analysts - many due to his processing ability, and some for his slight "happy feet" in the pocket. Wouldn't be surprised if Maye throws a fair # of interceptions because he can read the field but is not yet mentally fast enough to execute what he wants to do and his pass is just slightly too late, or goes up against some coverages he hasn't seen before and gets fooled. Those are growing pains that a young QB goes through though no matter when they start and he will improve over time.
He has to go through it to learn. Why not go through it now?

We're taking preseason stats seriously? Yikes

If Brisett wins 1 game what is the point of sitting Maye?

Dolphins
Texans
Jaguars in London
Jets

Maybe NE beats the Jags?

The mistake was made on draft day. The rest will just be the train wreck that follows
Nothing is for sure but I think it's way too soon to say Maye was a mistake. I liked Williams but the Pats had no shot at him. Also MHJ would have been great and all but Brissett and the rest of them don't have the talent to make him relevant.

The problem has been offense. If they can score this season they will have a chance to be in every game. If the defense is logging minutes on the field like last season forget about it.

No question he should play. Maybe not immediately if they don’t think he’s ready week 1 but Brisett isn’t winning us any playoff games

What we know is the mistake was thinking stiddy could be the hier apparent. He can't even beat out nix.

Because you can learn without being on the field and he has the rest of his career to get on the field and see live action. When you enlist in the military you get trained on your specific job for weeks if not months before you get to your first duty station. Then you get to watch the guys do the job under real world circumstances, ask why they did what they did, what their thought process was, and eventually you start doing it yourself. It's the same concept here. He can get into a rhythm and get used to the week-to-week schedule/life as an NFL QB. Learn how they study film. Learn how to prepare for a real game. Do all of the things that go into being an NFL professional outside of 1PM to 4PM on Sundays. Hopefully he can figure those things out first for a few weeks and then get live fire thrown at him

I’m bored.

Japan is an excellent destination to visit. Not only is it ultra safe and remarkably affordable, you can easily navigate within the islands on their amazing public transportation.

The food is out of this world. Whether you like sushi, rice, ramen (my personal favorite), or wagu steak, Japan has something for everyone.

Culturally, the country is full of temples, futuristic cities, and nature beyond compare. They are also a very organized people - once you get the hang of things, you can get by with very little to no understanding of their beautiful language. I have tried to improve my Japanese in order to better communicate the next time I visit, despite the fact that it’s quite different from romance & anglo Saxon dialects.

Japanese travel, unlike most patsfans offseason threads, can be very rewarding. I highly recommend it, as I dream of returning as soon as possible.

Thank you. And bless.

Losing Judon is going to sting and Batmore is out for the season as far as I am concerned.

Bengals,Jets, Dolphins, Texans, 49ers are all post season contenders right now. 6 of the first 8 games.

Play Maye and get him real time NFL experience now. Get it over with.

Agreed. Maye is best thing the team can hope for. Simply by converting 3rd downs and sustainable drives would be a welcomed sight. Of all those teams mentioned the Texans IMO have the most skill position guys to cover.
