Patriots 53-Man Roster Projection 2.0

Hm. Buchanan over Bequette would still surprise me. Develin over Ballard (essentially) would also be a mild surprise, even with Ballard struggling. He's dirt cheap compared to Fells and Hooman. Still holding out hope Ras-I beats Cole. And I was really hoping Tavon or Duron had shown enough that we could get rid of Gregory and keep Ebner for ST instead.

They wont PUP Gronk.
Why cut Harrison if you can PUP him.
Writer forgot Ballard was in camp. No mention of him at all, cut, IR? Roster?

Fail

Has Ebner practiced at all? Could he be PUP'ed?

This is what I have for a projection it is likely to change after tonight's game. I'm admittedly light at OL and will probably adjust that in my next projection.

I believe that the 50 below works well. I have Cunningham over Velano, Grissom and Buchanan.

What have people seen/heard from bequette so far this camp that makes them pencil him in? Is it more of just an expectation that he will make the team based on his 3rd round pick or do you think he's earned it somehow?

I only ask because he's seemingly being universally locked in without explanation and i'd love to hear some reason for optimism.

Since it's very likely Buchanan would get scooped en route to the PS, I wonder if he makes the final 53 by default...

No one makes the 53 by default. If Belichick thinks that Buchanan is more likely to help the team, then Buchanan will make the 53 over Bequette. It is really is that simple.

This is general principle. Belichick doesn't refuse to cut players because another team might pick him up.

BTW, being on the Practice Squad does not protect us from losing a player. Any team can sign "our" Practice Squad players at any time. In essence, these players are free agents.

What I'm saying is that if they see potential in Buchanan, and if they want to keep him around, they'll almost certainly have to keep him on the 53 (or IR him...I guess?). Particularly if he can play STs, I see him having an edge over other marginal bottom-of-the-roster guys.

I think 5-10 spots are still in play, and I think we could still see multiple roster spots going to players that aren't currently on the team, but here's a 50 man projection with only a couple of qualms...

Edit: I forgot to mention.... Armstead to either PUP or in-season IR, and I missed putting Francis on the roster.

Surprise with Beauharnais making the cut.

This is more or less how I see it. Though I would rather keep an additional DL in lieu of Tebow.

Your roster projections have us incredibly thin at LB which is a very important ST position.

Reason why Bequette makes the team: He's only a 2nd year player and he's been healthy.

The Patriots are 5 deep at LB, if you use Ninkovich as a DE:

Spikes
Mayo
Hightower
Collins
Fletcher

After that, it's a bunch of replaceables who could be axed for other team's cuts, IMO, which is why I only kept one other on my projected roster.

Collins and Fletcher are the only ones on that list that will ever be used on Special Teams. In the past we've always kept 3 or more LBs for ST. White, Koutovides and Tarpinian have been those guys most recently. I'm not ready to count Tarpinian out yet, I think his ST value and WOLB depth is useful.

I think Beauharnais, Bequette and Buchanan all make the team. This is the year where Dowling and Cunningham's days are numbered.

My super shocking cut is: Justin Francis

Should be interesting to see what happens to Armstead. Wish we had some more information about what's going on there...

I REALLY want Armstead to make this team. I almost feel like they're so thin at the position they should just take the risk on upside alone even if he's not completely healthy.
