Patriots 53-Man Roster Projection 2.0

I REALLY want Armstead to make this team. I almost feel like they're so thin at the position they should just take the risk on upside alone even if he's not completely healthy.

Well, they've been trying to get an interior pass rush for a while now and I think he presents the best chance of panning out in that department. So, yeah, I'm with you on this.

QB (3) Brady, Mallett, Tebow
RB (4) Ridley, Vereen, Bolden, Washington
WR (6) Amendola, Boyce, Thompkins, Dobson, Edelman, Slater
TE (4) Gronkowski, Sudfeld, Hoomanawanui, Fells
C (1) Wendell
G (4) Mankins, Connolly, Cannon, Green
T (3) Vollmer, Solder, Svitek
DE (5) Jones, Ninkovich, Benard, Bequette, Buchanan
DT (3) Wilfork, Kelly, Forston
ILB(3) Spikes, Fletcher, Beauharnais
OLB(4) Mayo, Hightower, Collins, Tarpinian
CB (5) Talib, Dennard, Arrington, Ryan, Cole
SS (2) Wilson, Wilson
FS (3) McCourty, Gregory, Harmon
ST (3) Gostkowski, Mesko, Aiken

Total players: 53
Created with Pats Picker: Pats Picker 2013

Practice Squad
Cory Grissom, Mark Harrison, Nate Ebner, Quentin Sims, Markus Zusevics, Justin Francis, Josh Kline

PUP
Gronk, Armstead (if can we start him on the PUP?)

Picking that last OL was hard. I do think we will carry 8, seven just seems too thin. I gave Greene the nod but wouldn't be surprised if Kline or Zusevics snatch it.

Going 3 deep at DT sucked but we did that last year too.

Had to cut Ebner. I think we have a huge influx of rookies that will contribute to ST and make him expendable. Home Improvement (Wilson Wilson) at SS will be fine.

Justin Francis is my yearly Bill Belichick surprise cut. He's kind of a Net-0 at LDE and the value of him being a small 3 technique DT just isn't worth it.

Nate Ebner and Justin Francis are not eligible for the practice squad.

A player is eligible for the practice squad if they have not accrued a season of free agent eligibility according to the NFL's rules. In essence, a player has to have not been on a team's 46-man active game-day roster for more than eight games in any accrued seasons, and cannot have been on a practice squad for more than two years. A player may be placed on a team's practice squad a third time, but only so long as that team maintains 53-players on their active/inactive roster. If the team should drop below 53-players, the third year practice squad player will automatically be elevated to the main roster.

I question the relative value of Beuharnais and Tarpinian compared to Francis, or even Cunningham. I think that we need that 9th DL.

I've got to the point that I am posting 50 man rosters, since the last three are such a crapshoot (as it should be, since these players could come from other teams).

Re: Re: Patriots 53-Man Roster Projection 2.0

No one makes the 53 by default. If Belichick thinks that Buchanan is more likely to help the team, then Buchanan will make the 53 over Bequette. It is really is that simple.

This is general principle. Belichick doesn't refuse to cut players because another team might pick him up.

I'm not sure that's true last season Belichick kept Salas and Fortson on the initial roster lieu veterans who were more prepared to contribute initially and then when rosters settled he moved them to the practice squad after weeks 2 and 3 respectively.

I think of Belichick as a strategic team builder and suggesting that his roster choices are as simplistic as picking the players who are most likely to help him win week 1 or even year 1 diminishes what he actually does. I'm sure Gerrard Warren would of contributed far more in 2012 than Jake Bequette, or Marcus Fortson but Warren was cut just the same. Any successful organization in any industry has to look at long term and short term rewards in order to remain sustainable.

Reason why Bequette makes the team: He's only a 2nd year player and he's been healthy.
There is nothing to suggest that Bequette has leaped ahead of Benard, Buchanan, Francis on the defensive end depth chart.

I don't know how TE Daniel Fells makes this Team he's not even a goood inline blocker. Fells better show marked improvements in these preseason or he's a goner.

Why do I get the strange feeling you just made this up?

Hoomanawanui can block.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had my doubts about them being PS eligible but wasn't sure. It doesn't change my feelings that they don't make the team though.

Call it a mix of hunch, his draft position relative to his years in the league and reading about him doing decent in 1-on-1s and 2-on-2s...

...and throw slight binkiness into that equation too.

Never underestimate the value of special teams fodder. I wouldn't be surprised if we had 6 DEs though.

I wouldn't be surprised if we had 6 DEs though.
I would especially if the New England Patriots carry 6 wide receivers and Tim Tebow (ugh!) on the 53 man roster.

1) I did not say that helping the team was limited to one game.

2) Salas is poor example in that he was useless to us, then and now.

3) Forston was an OK and inexpensive backup DT.

4) I did not favor cutting Warren. We would have had a better team with Warren on the roster.

5) Belichick will indeed play with the "bottom" of the 53 man roster a lot throughout the season, especially in the first couple of weeks.

6) There are many choices at DE and DT. Buchanan may or may not be one of the best ones.

Develin is the big outlier there.

Otherwise, it's just making choices in what are consensus tough battles, like:

  • Mesko vs. Allen
  • Ebner vs. a whole lot of ST-oriented LBs

The preseason games should sort out the defensive end log jam as opposed to the training camp practices.

Reports have indicated Fells has been playing well in practices, running very good routes, etc.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing him and Hooman, be beat out by Sudfeld and Ford; however it seems unlikely.
