I'm more intrigued by this because it sets the market for picks in the middle of the round that wannt to move up into the top 5. If we could get the same deal with a team like the Eagles, if one of the big QBs is still on the market when it's Philly's turn I could see them trading down.

I've kinda pencilled in the Eagles as a possible team Bill might target if he's moving up. They already have their big QB, and have quite a few holes on the roster, so a slightly later first and a couple supplementary picks/pieces (in other words, quantity over quality) would probably sound good to them.

What qb do the eagles have? They need one as much as anybody.

I would just prepare myself if I were some of you for the very real possibility that not only do we not move up for a QB in the 1st, (highly unlikely now) but that we don't draft a QB at all.

I'm confused. How does Bill have all the leverage? Lynch has a veteran QB with his salary under their cap + Pick #3 for the QBOF. Bill has Cam + Pick #15.

I think they are both willing to proceed like this. There's nothing Lynch needs from Bill. Nothing.

Meh, perhaps I overstated his leverage. It was more implied if Jimmy only wanted to come to NE, but I did a poor job expressing it.

If Jimmy was open to go anywhere, yea Bill loses a ton of leverage if he remains stubborn on compensation. We clearly saw with LA there are teams willing to offer everything and the kitchen sink for a QB.

Yup. Ideally they get to draft Waddle and get Jimmy for a 2nd, then pick up Mills in the 2nd with a trade-up. If Jimmy can't happen this year, they still draft Waddle and Mills, and they just wait 1 year to get Jimmy as a free agent. And by that point, maybe Mills has shown well in his red-shirt year and they don't even need Jimmy.

Cam isn’t getting cut, for depth I doubt Stidham is either. We aren’t carrying 4 QBs on the roster. It’s either Jimmy G or a QB in the draft, not both.

I think I understand what you mean now - the 1st they used for the player, two future 1sts and a 3rd.

Wise has been serviceable for the most part. He started off hot his rookie season (a sack in three straight games and was very disruptive), but I'm in the minority that think he's regressed since then. I really liked Rivers and thought he had a bright future, but he just couldn't stay healthy. Same story with Tre' Jackson as he was the superior player to his fellow draftee Shaq Mason, but injuries ruined his career.

No question the NEP have had a hard time drafting players who have stayed healthy.

If the issue with JimmyG is his cap hit, why not just restructure his contract to convert his salary to bonus and add void years at the end?

Except, I looked at their cap and they have $19.7M (9th highest) with 76 players under contract and 9 draft picks (1-#3, 2-#43, 3-#102, 4-#117, three in 5th, a 6th & a 7th).

With many of their injured players coming back incl. Jimmy, the #3 pick for their QBOF, plenty of cap space left; the 49ers are in excellent position to be a contender THIS year.

They don't have to risk putting their QBOF out there on WK-1. Maybe they pull a Flores and play the rookie after WK-8 depending on his development and Jimmy's play, but Flores ended up bringing Fitz back a few times because Tua wasn't ready yet. Maybe they trade Jimmy by the Nov. trade deadline. Who knows.

The point is, Lynch isn't just going to gift JimmyG to Bill. He's probably on thin ice as it is. He really doesn't need to do anything at this point.

We don't have our pick of ALL the qb's in the draft even if we trade up it might be the 4th best option which might not be someone we like. We are limited by the logistics of how things are panning out with the draft and in FA who wants to come here and for how much.

I get the mentality of anyone other than Cam but maybe the team is thinking more long term. Cam wasn't great and with awful TE's WR's and a front seven made of cheese we went 7-9. with a favourable wind we could get 3-4 more wins with things as they are. We are clearly in the market for a qb but they aren't going to pick just anyone because they have to. BB has never worked that way.

We now have a full offseason/ preseason, a more knowledgeable Cam, and a roster with way more talent at all positions. Bill probably feels he can win 11 games, enough to make it to the playoffs. Thats 2 years removed from losing the GOAT QB. Ahead of schedule and make the move for QBOF in 2022. Will it be enough for the hairs on fire, hysterical pansies on the forum? Of course not.

Check out the number of 49er players with expiring contracts after the 2021 season. More than 40 player's deals are up.

He could use the extra 2021 cap space to lock those players up.

You are misunderstanding. I am not saying that Bill would not want Jimmy. I am saying Bill was told that Jimmy will not be available which is why he signed Cam. He loves Cam and would not have signed him to just cut him a few weeks later when he got Jimmy. Bill does not roll that way.

Ok let’s look at this the arguments are Cam didn’t have enough time in the system didn’t get the rapport with his receivers? Let’s look at last year Cam balled out for 3 weeks then crashed hard. We could look at Covid maybe it slowed him down a few tics, maybe it clouded his mind just enough to make a significant difference. Facts he seemed slower running the ball, his arm was dead this was Peyton Manning like ducks minus the accuracy. Let’s talk about him going thru his reads now I only watched the Games on tv but Cam looked like a one look read then attempt to run or we were looking at negative plays.
Now is this due to Indecison to what he saw? Lack of trust in receivers? Not understanding the routes of the offense or the defense fooling
Him? Cam balled out the last game of the season against the Jets but the Jets knew there coach was fired they played and looked flat and unprepared. Couple that with the Patriots being motivated to finish strong. We saw the best of Cam that game.
So which Cam do we have for next season? Nobody can doubt the mans work Ethic, nobody can deny his team mates and coaches love him. But if he can’t physically get the ball where it needs to be in those win or lose situations what does it matter. If he can’t get thru his reads to find the open man what good does how many jump rope or weight lift he does? Does it matter the team loves the nicknames he gives each player if he can’t put the ball in a tight window?
Facts are after signing Cam to a very affordable deal we still have explored other QBs and keep going to the Jimmy phone to talk to Lynch. These are facts. Do Ed trust Cam to win the division? We can say we have gotten better sure but Miami is set up for the next few years with blue chip draft picks. Buff has a strong roster hitting on all cylinders. The Jets have a had a excellent offseason and are taking a Mahommes like talent in Wilson huge wild card kid could be one of the greats or BB could have him seeing Ghosts. Sales seems like a great motivator and the first head coach decision to set them up for success. If the 2020 Cam is the best that we can do then we are wasting a historic free agent frenzy. This is just my opinion.

scenario : Jimmy plays at least 15 games. The team goes 12-5. Or even 11-6. New guys clicking, RBs plowing behind nice OL, playoffs come and they hit their peak. They get to the AFCCG vs KC. There, we see how it goes.

Question : is that worth #15 ? You signing up for that ?

Do we really believe the niners are going to draft a kid #3 and tell him he has no chance of starting? and promise the starting job to Jimmy G? They know who they are drafting at #3 and are going to give them every opportunity to compete to start.

So, what happens if they look good like Justin Herbert. Do you sit Jimmy G your $25million QB on the bench? Do you sit your #3 pick because you are paying a guy $25million?

How many qb's drafted as high as #3 in the past few years rode the bench their rookie season? we love to tout the idea of the rookie sitting like Rodgers behind Favre. But lately these guys come into the league ready to go. Or they are sitting behind someone like Fitzpatrick or TYrod Taylor just waiting to take over.

i dont know if theres been a recent situation where a team is paying a guy $25million who is clearly not part of their future. and having a #3 high pick sit no matter how good or ready they look
