Path cleared for Jimmy's return? [SF trades for #3 pick]

I wish everyone would stop saying that SF traded three #1's to move up. They traded two #1's. They still have this year's #1, it just higher.

This is exactly it. We've just spent the last few months ragging on the Packers and the Chiefs (before Mahomes restructured) for all the space their QBs take up. There's a price for taking on Jimmy G's contract, whether you're the 49ers or the Patriots. This is exactly why the 49ers paid so much for a rookie QB. They know they can load up for the next 4 years.
Jimmy G has little guaranteed money. His contract is going to be redone, wherever he winds up. It's in a team's interest and in his interest.

They used 3 1st round picks and a 3rd on whomever they choose.

I think Bill will live with Cam if he has to, but it can't be his preference if he can land JG. So I'd expect a trade before draft day if they can agree on compensation. A mid-2nd probably feels like too much to BB for a 30 year old with an injury history who's good but not great. A low 3rd isn't enough to get SF to move. They'll have to find a middle ground. Maybe it'll be a 4th this year and a 3rd next year, something like that.

No they moved up from 12 to 3, and for that they traded two 1st's and a 3rd.

Another factor working against us getting JG is the Bears. They'd probably love to get JG, and he'd probably OK that deal cause he's from IL and went to college there. That competition could keep the price up.

Miami may be jumping back up to take Penei Sewell. We can't assume they're going for a QB. All 4 top QBs may be gone by #6.
My point was that I had us trading up early in two stages.. using a 2nd and a 3rd to move up to around 6 then use a 2022 first to move up to 2,3 or 4.. say draft night If we had acted early on the first part then it may have stopped the 49er deal because we would have taken the deal breaker for Miami was that they could trade back in to 6. Being at 6 gives us a backup plan to take the best WR or TE possibly.

I said about the two stage move in the thread about moving up early.

To acquire this year's 1st round pick, SF will spend THIS YEAR's 1st round pick, plus their 3rd, and NEXT YEAR's 1st round pick, and 2023's 1st round pick.

So, as I said, 3 first-rounders and a third.

We're nitpicking here. They swapped picks. In order to do that, SF gave up two 1st rounders and a 3rd.

I'm more intrigued by this because it sets the market for picks in the middle of the round that wannt to move up into the top 5. If we could get the same deal with a team like the Eagles, if one of the big QBs is still on the market when it's Philly's turn I could see them trading down.

I've kinda pencilled in the Eagles as a possible team Bill might target if he's moving up. They already have their big QB, and have quite a few holes on the roster, so a slightly later first and a couple supplementary picks/pieces (in other words, quantity over quality) would probably sound good to them.

Correct.

It's more than nitpicking though. When you move up in a round, the compensation you pay for that is the other picks involved, not the pick you swapped from. The deal here is they made a move from 12 to 3, and the comp they gave Miami was two 1st's and 3rd. If you say they traded three 1sts and a 3rd, that's distorting the price they paid.

Again, nitpicking, I agree, but I didn't say that. I said the guy they're taking costs them 3 1sts and a 3.

they traded three 1sts and a 3rd, for a 1st in return. How is this that hard?

IMO Bill would pay a 2nd for Jimmy, but Lynch is licking his lips wanting #15 this year. Bill is likely saying GFY on that one.

Bill would rather draft Waddle/Surtain/etc, play with Cam 1 year and then sign Jimmy as a free agent next year, than give up a player of that caliber just to get Jimmy 1 year earlier by paying #15.

As he should. The whole world knows the niners plans at 3. Any leverage the niners had as far as making teams think Jimmy could be their long term QB is gone.

Yup. Ideally they get to draft Waddle and get Jimmy for a 2nd, then pick up Mills in the 2nd with a trade-up. If Jimmy can't happen this year, they still draft Waddle and Mills, and they just wait 1 year to get Jimmy as a free agent. And by that point, maybe Mills has shown well in his red-shirt year and they don't even need Jimmy.

I think this is 100% spot on. Belichick is content with going into the season with Cam and if anyone should know it, it'd be someone who played for him. Bill almost refused Lynch's request to play the full final preseason game. He makes decisions and that's that (see: Butler in Super Bowl).

So in a NE-SF trade, Bill has all the leverage. Especially when SF drafts a QB and if Jimmy approves a NE trade (which would be shocking if he didn't).
I'm confused. How does Bill have all the leverage? Lynch has a veteran QB with his salary under their cap + Pick #3 for the QBOF. Bill has Cam + Pick #15.

I think they are both willing to proceed like this. There's nothing Lynch needs from Bill. Nothing.

Only on Patsfans does Bill have leverage over Lynch.

I feel like when talking about the 49ers having leverage we forget Jimmy is a person and not just an "asset" and probably feels slighted that the niners are basically saying we don't like you.

Now, how is he going to feel when they ask him to take a pay cut? There's also a chance he loses the QB competition or loses his job during the season

Jimmy and his agent see the writing on the wall and they may say get us out a year early. Alex smith is an outlier and brady, favre, rodgers are hof type QBs who were never in danger.

Well that's true. I originally wasn't replying to your post.
