OT: Womens U.S Hockey Wins Gold!!

I haven't watched a minute of the Olympics. They're all pretty much money-grubbing pros, media hucksters shilling for their "brand" and rabid narcissists at this point, aren't they? The notion - probably erroneous for some time now, in all honesty - that these are people motivated by a love of their sport, or - even more preposterous in these times - by a sense of pride in competing for their country is pretty much entirely horseshit, isn't it?

Ditto for college sports: couldn't care less The only basketball I enjoy these days is when I go to a local high school game. Those are terrific. The NBA is lousy basketball played by people you have to hold your nose to root for. Who needs it? The Tatum "documentary"? You can't be serious.

As for the NFL, that'll likely remain a somewhat guilty pleasure for a while longer, I suppose. It's a habit, and a lot of the current Pats team are solid, decent people, it seems to me, and I am happy to see them play their game, but I pay minimal attention to the other teams, except when they play the Pats.

Baseball? When I am looking for that sort of entertainment, I can paint an outbuilding, pull up a lawn chair, and watch it dry.

Don't mince words. How do you feel about the current state of spectator sports in America?

Dude.
First off, I'm Canadian and played hockey my whole life, still play.
Canada (men's) were lacklustre in their 1/4 final, but they are the clear favourite. Canada had to eke out a win in OT, but the US was dominate in their eked out OT win?
Canada Mens are the clear favourite.
US women's are ahead of the class by a wide margin. US has gotten younger and faster, Canada has gotten old and slow. I expected a 4+ goal win for the US, was surprised Canada kept it close, but the talent difference was very noticeable.
Unlike Maust I thought the women's hockey was a very tough watch. So sloppy compared to the men's hockey I grew up watching and playing. I have nothing against women's hockey, I watched it today just like every other women's International hockey tourney for the past many years, but it was really tough watch. US were better, Canada had a hard time completing a clean pass or making a simple play like like chipping the puck out.
Congrats to the US women, they deserved it, they are a far better team right now.
Also Canadian, also grew up playing hockey and still play and coach.

I understand the narrative around older and slower but come on now, we were up by 1 with ~ 2 to play. Even a bit longer in the tooth, we played well, likely our best game in the tournament.

Maybe talent, but more speed was on display fore the US but Troy had them playing within a system, and it worked well until a bogus line change.

Coaching female hockey I am a big advocate of it. They are not going to be as fast and physical as the men, and they are not going to check. So park all of that. The women are competing in a sport that...when I was growing up they played ringette on the ice after the boys were done their games and practice. We all should be supportive and throwing shade is not really that cool.

Patriots board here so this is the last from me on this. Lets just acknowledge the two teams played a good competitive game. This rivalry is anything but a tough watch. These ladies played amazing but I do agree, the US were the stronger talent-wise and speed wise team. And on a separate note, like everything sports, it would be nice if everyone just left politics out of it. Its a challenge though for some to do that, not sure why.

Now, lets see if the men can get past Slovakia and Finland today. At this stage, any team is ripe for an upset but the hockey should be good. If they both do, then the hype train will kick into serious overdrive (and that means the sport of hockey and those that watch it win...just like McDavid said...).

Our neighbor to the south will be looking for a little revenge....

WTF 8 am Sunday morning start time for the one game everyone has been waiting for?

You would think with all that money NBC paid for the broadcasting rights, they would have some say so about this.

LFG USA!

You can’t get up at 8a to see it? Sounds like an ideal breakfast watch to me.

I'm an old man, I get up at 0530! It would have been nice to go to a sports bar and for once, everybody be rooting for the same team!
In Ontario bars are allowed to be open and serving alcohol at 6am tomorrow.
Our premier has his priorities straight

Considering both countries inhabit the same 4 time zones (Alaska and Hawaii notwithstanding), they reallly should have pushed it back a couple hours to accommodate both participants.

You need to watch Alysa Liu’s gold medal figure skating performance, especially her freestyle skate, preferably after reviewing the story of her retirement and subsequent comeback. It’s totally contrary to your narrative.

Watch this. Especially the spin into her ending. And make sure you watch the whole thing so you catch her comment directly to camera as she skated off the ice after her performance.

US Women were by far the best team in the tournament. US Men appear similarly dominant, Canada had to eke out an OT win over Czech just to make the medal round.
The men are up 1-0 right now.

I met a Candian woman here in NH a couple of years ago who felt that the USA's biggest problem was nationalism. It was right after a Canadian golfer won the Canadian open for the first time in 75 years and the entire country exploded with pride. As I told her, if Canadian athletes can have pride in their country why can't American athletes? She didn't have an answer.

Good luck this morning btw but not quite enough to win.

Can't speak for the US, but playing for Canada means a lot to our athletes and the rest of the country.
There are many sports in Canada (obv not hockey) that are severely underfunded, and athletes have to work ****ty jobs just to be able to afford to compete.
He's not speaking for the US either. Like any other country's citizens, including Canadians, we're proud to be Americans.

The USA already has more gold medals in these games than any other winter games.

Yeah and that isn't including some epic choke jobs either. Could/should be even higher.

Nat M will have nightmares re that open net post shot…

Wow. But I do feel sorry for the Canadians. Kind of wonder how Connor Hellebuyck will be received back in Winnipeg.
