Tony "League Average" Romo.

It's still not good for the body. The yo-yo effect isn't beneficial over the long run and gets harder to maintain, the older you get. Larry Bird was the worst example of this- he used to eat wedding cakes and ice cream by the gallon in the offseason (he boasted about eating 7, one offseason). One has to wonder if that was a major reason for him having a short career.

Back injury was the reason for him having a short career. Cake in the offseason had nothing to do with it.

The point being, he didn't take care of himself in the offseason. The result of that was a balky back, which changed the way he ran (pushing off his heels) which led to those bone spurs, etc, etc. it also didn't help that he abused himself recklessly on the court, diving for balls.

Not his fault of course. The good old 80's... when a handful of ballers were still smoking.

His back injury was because of shoveling crushed rock in a driveway, which is the sort of thing that can happen to anyone, no matter what shape they are in.

That happened in the summer of '85, and he finally had surgery on it in '91. Between then, he didn't exactly go out of his way to rehab properly or change his health habits. It also probably didn't help that his pain tolerance was legendary.

IIRC, Bird's wedding cake consumption went WAY up after his retirement. In fact, I remember he cut back on his Miller Lite's circa 1984, which helped him lose some lbs and improve his game. Who was his drinking buddy the C's traded for that reason? Rick Robey?

I think the biggest contributor to Bird's health issues was often forgetting that he was Larry effng Bird and shoveling rocks and cutting his own grass while rocks flew at his face... and playing like a complete animal.

I've been hearing but can't confirm that this fat Romo picture has been photoshopped. If so, please out the author so people can "thank" him.

They made him look skinnier than he really was? I believe it.

I went to see the Pats destroy Dallas (in Dallas) 2007. Both teams were undefeated going in. Coming out of that stadium it was much more quiet. I met Ty Warren that night. Dude was ginormous!
