Ok. So one thing that's been on my mind and only amplified in my drunken state at 6 am watching AMC 4th and loud is this.

The nfl is a beastly league. Worth billions and leave no stones unturned. So I have to imagine they have to own a copyright on the AFL name. They apparently do no since the arena football league is the current AFL.

My question to you is this. Is this a over looked detail on a 1960s NFL or can they not own the AFL name?

AFL is simply an abbreviation, not a (league) name.

It would be like the old trade-union organization, the American Federation of Labor saying the Patriots, Bills, Titans, Oilers, Texans, Broncos, Chargers and Raiders could not call themselves the American Football League since that infringed on their AFL (AFL-CIO) name and caused confusion with the public.

If the Arena Football League called themselves the American Football League, that would be a different matter.
