We can sign any stud linebacker we need next off-season without any draft capital. Why pay now. We are not winning the Superbowl this year.A massive draft haul? Meh, as good as Roquan Smith, is, he's still a linebacker. And as you've just stated, he wants to get paid. So I don't see the Bears getting more than a 1st or 2nd round pick plus a later pick in return.
As this relates to the Patriots, the more relevant questions are 1) how do they feel about their linebacker corps and if they are interested 2) would they be able to fit Roquan Smith under the cap considering he wants to get paid as a top linebacker.
Would I feel more confident about the Patriots defense with a stud linebacker like Roquan Smith? Of course. But it really depends on how BB feels about his defensive personnel.
Does he feel like he has enough back there with the likes of Raekwon McMillan, Mack Wilson, and Jawhuan Bentley? None of these guys are household names, but maybe BB feels the linebackers he has now are good enough considering that he seems to feel good about his DL with Godchaux and Barmore up front.
Can’t sign them if they’re not on the market. We can sign any stud linebacker we need next off-season without any draft capital. Why pay now. We are not winning the Superbowl this year.
Are we sure no other linebacker will be on the market next year? Can’t sign them if they’re not on the market.
if Smith is traded no doubt he will be extended. So contrary to your false equivalency if he’s really on the trade market the Pats wont get him without spending some capital.
There almost certainly will be. But will they be even close to as good as Smith? Are we sure no other linebacker will be on the market next year?
You assume that 1) BB is willing to spend big money on a linebacker 2) a stud linebacker becomes available in the free agency market who wants to sign with the Patriots. None of those are a given. With a trade, at least you're guaranteed to get your guy.We can sign any stud linebacker we need next off-season without any draft capital. Why pay now. We are not winning the Superbowl this year.

Don't forget that free agency is a bidding war. Any 'stud player' is going to demand top dollar. And except for the one huge spending spree in 2021, the Patriots are historically not known for shelling out top dollar to free agents.

Its not just Gilmore, Roosevelt Colvin (hip injury derailed his promising career), Darrelle Revis would be others that come to mind.Steph Gilmore says hi.
Revis came here for a 1 year deal on a relatively cheap contract to restore his image and get one last big payday. Its not just Gilmore, Roosevelt Colvin (hip injury derailed his promising career), Darrelle Revis would be others that come to mind.
