OT: Revis reportedly "furious" with the Jets could Mangold be next?

This team is already imploding and it's only June. Imagine Sanchez's life with a back-up playing for a holding out Mangold, a rookie at RG, and Ferguson RT. It'll be a feeding frenzy.

But dude, they replaced their starting RB from the #1 rushing offense in the league with LaDainian Tomlinson! They're going to dominate.

Imploding is a bit of an overreaction, let's not forget the only thing that has happened is Revis has skipped out on VOLUNTARY workouts.

No instead I would call this the first few stones falling that will eventually start an avalanche. The Jets are in an odd position, normally when a team has a player locked up for another three years they have all the leverage, however this case is unique.

Revis is an exceptional player and the Jets have obviously put themselves in a win now position. If they don't cave to his demands Revis could easily threaten to hold out until thier bye (week 7) and that could potentially derail the whole season.

The Jets need this year because they have PSLs to sell, so I think they sign him at around 16M, but no matter what happens I'm fairly confident they won't be in a position to compete in 2011.

Both Mangold and Revis sound like they're ready to hold out until the bye week. The Jets will have to get something done with Revis, at the very least. He changes the way they play defense. Without him, they'll either have to change their entire philosophy or they'll get picked apart. I think Revis will get taken care of while Mangold will be forced to wait. Hopefully it gets ugly.

I don't miss the Diva bullsh1t that comes with having a top rated CB.

Re: OT: Revis is reportedly "furious" with the Jets

You can also thank your idiotic coach for inflating your entire team's ego to the point where they believe they deserve more than they do.

To be fair, that happens any time a team wins a Super Bowl...

Oh wait, the Jets weren't even in the Super Bowl...? What's that you say, they just think they won it, because they made the playoffs...?

Huh.

Rexie's giving us some pretty entertaining stuff to get us through this looooooong offseason:rocker:

Re: OT: Revis is reportedly "furious" with the Jets

You are so wrong. Ferguson is one of the upper echelon left tackles in the league.

Ferguson is the second most important out of the four listed. I'd take Revis and Ferguson over anyone else on the Jets right now.

This is soooo true. Whatever Mangold ends up with, Ferguson should get 150% of. And if the Jets won't immediately pay him that much, he should hold out until they do.

This is about personal justice, being treated right, not being disrespected. Every Jet fan should shout out loud until the individual Jet players are treated as they deserve.

Well, I doubt either will hold out. Revis risks losing his $20 million guaranteed in 2011 and 2012 from holding out. Rarely if ever anymore do players hold out.

That said, the Jets are enforcing the perception that they will overpay to get talent and screw over their homegrown talent no matter how good they are. Not a great prescidence to set with Mangold, Ferguson, and Harris approaching free agency.

Huh.

It must be because of their stellar regular season record they had last year.

Jets fans on Patsfans have gone to great lengths to show us all why Darrelle Revi$ is better than Asomugha. What's a better way to show the world how good a cornerback Revi$ is than the Jets brass giving him a 5 year 100 million guaranteed contract.

I hear what you're saying, but do you really think that Revis would be happy to ignore what other top CBs around the league are earning if only his teammates made less? Or to put it another way, did Asante Samuel say "Oh, ok, I understand: this team is trying to be financially prudent across the board. That's fine then, I'll take a smaller deal"?

What really bugs me is the idea that a guy who signed a 6-year, $30 million rookie contract as a high 1st-round pick is "underpaid" because he played like a high 1st-round pick. This isn't a case of a UDFA who has started every game. Revis was compensated from day 1 like a high-level starter.

The only thing that bugs me more is UFAs who sign a totally front-loaded contract to guarantee as much of the cash as possible, then end up whining that they're underpaid based on the salary in the later years.

I argue if Revis is with the Patriots, none of this goes on right now. He would know that he isn't getting a new deal until at least one year left with his contract and to deal with it. The Jets made a big deal about getting Revis a new deal. Last year they made a big deal about getting Bart Scott and they grossly overpaid for him. They should have expected that Revis would want to be grossly overpaid even if it doesn't approach Nnamdi Asomugha's ridiculous contract.

I don't blame Revis for this because the Jets told the media that getting Revis a new deal was a priority this offseason. It not like Revis told them that he wanted a new deal and they weren't prepared to negotiate this offseason. If the Jets didn't say they were going to give Revis a new deal, would Revis even be actively looking for one right now. They even told Mangold and Ferguson that they had to wait until Revis got his deal before they negotiate with them.

The Jets made their bed and now they gotta lie in it. They can't overpay free agents to come to the Jets and expect players who they drafted to take lower than overpaying.

Now the one thing we do not know is what type of money is being thrown around. Are the Jets taking the philosophy that since Revis has three years left on his deal and they can lowball him or is Revis being unreasonable with his demands? Or a little bit of both? The Jets do have a history of promising players new deals and then renegging (Coles, Chris Baker, Pete Kendall, and Leon Washington).

The Jets have a big problem. The Jets' players witnessed last year in Leon Washington a prime example of what could happen to a player playing the 'good soldier' and playing out their contract year without a new contract and getting injured. That cost Leon a good amount of money.

:yeahthat:

Can anybody explain why they're talking contract at all? I don't get it. Revis is under contract for 3 years at an average value of $4.85 million/year. That's not what he'd command as a UFA, but it's far from exploitative -- and he's NOT a UFA. So why open talks?

Exactly right.

Revis is smart to get a new contract now. He is at the top of his game and probably the best CB or second CB in the NFL. All that matters is signing bonus. If Revis busts his leg up like Washington, its likely bye - bye to top shelf contract and the remaining money on his rookie contract if he gets cut.

Because Revis is one of the best, if not the best CB in the NFL. But, he is not among the top 10 highest paid at the position.

He has exceeded expectations. Pay him.

So are 1st-round rookie contracts utterly meaningless, then? If the player underperforms you show him the door, and if he overperforms, you're honor-bound to tear up his contract? Heck, why have long-term contracts for ANY player if you're supposed to constantly readjust to make sure that across all 32 teams, pay reflects performance rankings at each given point in time? Don't we need annual arbitration for everybody?

Barring that improbable (and ugly) scenario, there will be a "winner" and a "loser" in almost every contract. What are the chances that a player plays precisely to the value of his long-term deal, no more or less?

Revis negotiated a rookie deal that would reward him for success by making the team pay him $14 million to keep him for the last 2 years of his contract. That was a pretty significant concession for the team to make to a totally unproven rookie. They made it, and they should be able to reap the benefits.

Ahm a thrifty Scot but I dinnah ken resist watching this train wreck. Considering paying (ack!) for HBO to watch.

Well, Wes Welker has led the league in receptions each of the last three seasons and he is nowhere near the highest paid WRs in the league. The Pats have no intention of giving him a new deal even if he didn't blow out his ACL. Welker is way underpaid too.
