OT: Revis reportedly "furious" with the Jets could Mangold be next?

Re: OT: Revis is reportedly "furious" with the Jets

Nope. I'm worried.

I really, really hate Al Davis for ******* up the CB market when he gave that contract to Nnamdi. It's going to be real hard to pay Revis what he wants, AND pay Mangold, AND Harris AND Ferguson. Harris and Ferguson being next year.

One of those players is not like the others.

A franchise like Oakland can screw things up for everybody. Most of the dead-end NFL destinations are content to go cheap and try to build with their annual haul of high draft picks. But Al, bless his soul, still believes in his franchise enough to aim high with FAs. And the ONLY way to get 'em or keep 'em in Oakland is by overpaying, thus throwing off the whole league's pay scale.

So I would sympathize a lot with the Jets, if they weren't the Jets.

Would this statement have something to do with Mangold, Harris and Revis all being among the very best at their position and Ferguson not even remotely sharing that distinction?

I sorta agree, but not totally. As much as it sucks, a good front office should simply be able to take a hard-line stance of "Oakland overpaid the guy by a truly baffling amount. Market value does not reflect what they paid, simply because they're the only team dumb enough to pay that price, and they can't pay it again. Even the Raiders have realized how impossible that contract is, and they're trying to unload it as we speak. So if you want to get reasonable, we'd be happy to start negotiations with you from a realistic starting point. If you insist on $15M per year, then I'm afraid that we're going to have to hold you to the three years that are left on your contract. We recognize that you're underpaid, and we're willing to work with you to fix that, but you have to be willing to work with us too".

Now, I'm sure the Jets have done exactly that, but the bottom line is that, if the Jets are dense enough to give in, then they deserve what they get. If they're not stupid, and Revis insists on it anyways, then he and his agent will very quickly realize how little leverage they really have.

Davis sure did screw that up.....

Getting good is one thing, staying good is quite another in this day and age of cap hell & inflated player egos. Next year is going to be really hard,

You simply cannot pay everyone.

Appreciation for what BB and Polian and the Rooneys have done over past and now present decade becomes even more admirable.

Agree with everything.

Of the Jets four core players [Revis, Mangold, Ferguson, Harris], Harris is the most expendable. I think the Jets will cut ways with Harris at the end of next year unfortunately.

You are so wrong. Ferguson is one of the upper echelon left tackles in the league.

Ferguson is the second most important out of the four listed. I'd take Revis and Ferguson over anyone else on the Jets right now.

There are very few non Jet fans who share your opinion of Fergson.

Typical Belichick moves. Revis is the best CB who ever played for him, even better than Ty Law, and he is playing lowball with him again. Both Revis and Mangold are the best players on the team other than Brady and the Pats are screwing all three of them over.

Oh wait, Revis and Mangold are Jets. I thought the Pats are the only team that peisses off their superstars with lowball offers. You read some of the doom and gloomers on this board and you would believe that.

I was just gonnna say what your on ??? and can I have some

Actually not really feeling bad for the Jets. The Jets have overpaid for players like Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Calvin Pace, and Bart Scott in recent years. All those guys got over what their perceived value on the market. If are Revis you got average or above average teammates getting elite or near elite deals, why wouldn't he be insulted by anything other than a market setting deal or at least the second best deal ever for a CB.

Yes, Oakland did screw up the market for CBs, but part of the issue was self inflicted by the Jets themselves.

As guys like Felger lamented why the Pats didn't act like the Jets, they were oblivious to the fact that once you start giving above market deals to a lot of players you are constantly going to have players who expect above market deals. For guys like Revis and Mangold, that means market setting deals. This is why the Pats are selective with the players they overpay.

Don't bother. No matter how many facts you use, RRG is convinced the Ferguson is God's gift to the LT position.

Re: OT: Revis is reportedly "furious" with the Jets

Well, since he is the best corner in the NFL...

I would offer that you could make a case that he's the best football player in the NFL. Maybe an elite quarterback has a bigger impact on the game than an elite corner, and therefore could be considered more valuable, but is there a player who plays his position better than Revis plays CB?

To quote Gen Patton:

I love it. God help me, I do love it so.

The good news for Jet fans is that Revis WILL ultimately get his money. The bad news for Jet fans is that the ripple effect of THAT contract will make it impossible for the Jets to sign the Mangolds, Harris's. and Ferguson's of their team. Welcome to the real world Jet fans, you HAVE a good team and a window to win it all. Unfortunately your FO made that window of opportunity a VERY small one. Ain't Karma a B!tch

I'm not sure if i would pay Mangold. He is a center after all, starting centers are easy to find

They are all good players but i would try and keep Revis and the brick if i was them. I think Harris is a better player at his position than brick is at his, but good LTs are harder to find than MLB

I hear what you're saying, but do you really think that Revis would be happy to ignore what other top CBs around the league are earning if only his teammates made less? Or to put it another way, did Asante Samuel say "Oh, ok, I understand: this team is trying to be financially prudent across the board. That's fine then, I'll take a smaller deal"?

What really bugs me is the idea that a guy who signed a 6-year, $30 million rookie contract as a high 1st-round pick is "underpaid" because he played like a high 1st-round pick. This isn't a case of a UDFA who has started every game. Revis was compensated from day 1 like a high-level starter.

The only thing that bugs me more is UFAs who sign a totally front-loaded contract to guarantee as much of the cash as possible, then end up whining that they're underpaid based on the salary in the later years.

hopefully, revis will demand to be paid more than mangold and mangold will demand more than revis.

I like where this is headed.

Hahaha, this is the Jets own creation.

They hyped him up as the greatest CB in the league and now he wants the money to mirror that.

This team is already imploding and it's only June. Imagine Sanchez's life with a back-up playing for a holding out Mangold, a rookie at RG, and Ferguson RT. It'll be a feeding frenzy.
