And they'd have no quarterback and not a great shot at getting a new one.
Jerry has made the decision to pay one of the top QB's in NFL. He's not trading him.

Dallas needs a coach who is willing to be a coach, and only a coach, with input only on personnel decisions.

The coach needs to be comfortable with the pay, and the fact that he can be fired at any time. He will need guaranteed.

That being said, the personnel are there for this to be a playoff team. The problem has been progressing in the playoffs.

IMO, this is very good coaching opportunity with the chance to start with a playoff quality team with a top QB and top WR's.

I've heard it said that Vrabel didn't give a clear answer as to who he would bring in to fill out his coaching staff. That was intentional. He did say that some would be people that he knows and some that he doesn't. Lord Admiral Nelson once said; "A name across the stern of a ship serves no one but the enemy." Basically, don't advertise what you're doing or give your enemy any intel.

With all of the new coaching staff's that will be filling out this off season, why would Vrabel tell anyone who he was thinking of bringing in? Because if he did that, other teams might leap in first and snag them up. I suspect that given how much time he's known he was going to be the Patriots HC, he probably already not only knows who he wants on his coaching staff, but already has agreements in place.

So, how does McCarthy fit in? He was a successful OC and was the Packers HC when Rogers was drafted. He helped develop him and oversaw a successful offense when he was HC. I wouldn't mind him as OC, so long as they bring in a solid Assistant OC Type (perhaps whoever will be the next QB Coach, which probably won't be AVP). Josh McCown is a friend of Maye, and Maye has a great deal of respect for him. McCown is considered to be a solid QB Coach and Offensive Mind as well.

On a side note. What Jones did to McCarthy was real scum baggery of the first degree. Last week he denied McCarthy a chance to interview for another HC Job. Which is fine if Jones intended to keep him as HC. But now, it seems that Jones was only going to keep him if he took a pay reduction. I'm not going to buy that Jones didn't believe that there was anyway that McCarthy would have accepted that agreement. Therefore, he hindered McCarthy intentionally. If I were an in demand HC Canidate, there's no way I'd be HC of Dallas (and that was even before what Jones just pulled on McCarthy).
I agree that what Jones was bad optics, but realistically, the only opportunity that was lost for McCarthy was New England and that one was locked up for Vrabel a long time ago.

Any coach can be fired at any time however it has been over 20 years since Jerry has actually fired a coach. McCarthy as an example his contract expired.

Jerry doesn't want a HC, he wants a game day manager who will do what he says.

I'd love to see him bring on Deion Sanders. I think it'd be a **** show of epic proportions. Especially when Deion wakes up and has enough of Jerry's hogging the spotlight.

One of the reasons I thought Bill would be good for Dallas was because he's such a big figure it kind of neuters Jerry just a little bit. I think a similar thing could be true of Deion. The other 15 reasons to love Bill Deion may or may not possess but get him some strong coordinators and I'd enjoy watching it from afar. Might not be ideal if you're actually a Cowboy fan.

His timing for the NC job was always bizarre to me. This outcome with the Cowboys was totally predictable and that wont be the only job that will get opened between now and the draft.
Not bizarre at all. he had to hit the ground running with recruiting/NIL/Portal etc. you can fall behind in college football very quickly so he had to jump in and get to work. Plus, I'm not sure working for Jerry Jones is any great experience.

IHe wanted to run the org (despite what he said) and teams weren't letting him. Additionally I don't think Kraft was actually providing him solid recommendations.

think the interviewing process last year soured Bill on the NFL. Needing to sit down with these SVPs who had never won anything. I also believe there was some pride involved. He didn't want to be this old coach who year after year in the interview cycle only to be rejected.

Even if he was told to wait, I think he knew he wasn't going to have final say in Dallas which is why he took the UNC job.

There was a great article about why Belichick went to UNC. Ill need to find it. It was a great read as is basically what I said above.

I wasn't keen on McCarthy as HC for the Patriots anyway. But he has a good track record as an OC.
