So funny how every year people swear they won’t put any stock into preseason games, yet they do. I’d like to put some money on JG for league MVP at 40:1 odds. Also like Matt Ryan at 25:1.

Yeah, what a crappy player. Belichick was ready to make him TB12’s successor with a huge grin on his face.

Maybe. But this is a preseason game. I doubt Jimmy G is playing for his job. as good as Mullens and Beathard look the 49ers will want to justify the salary they paid him.

He's made his bones throwing lasers into tight spaces. If you're even a little off as that kind of thrower the result is catastrophic (see also: Favre, Brett). So again, not that worried about numbers he put in in a situation where his only real job was to prove that he can handle the physical mechanics of quarterbacking again.

Yes there is. But it doesn't come from this preseason game. It comes from the fact that every time he's been asked to carry the load of starting, he's gotten hurt. Which has a lot to do with his bad habit of trying to extend plays outside the pocket when he should be throwing it away to avoid taking exactly the kinds of hits that injured him.

Both of his 2 major injuries, the shoulder in 16 and the knee last year, happened because he was trying to be a cowboy, scrambling around not just outside the pocket but WAY outside the pocket, single handedly trying make a broken play work, and got a bad hit from a good defender. Tony Romo was well known for taking those kinds of risks and getting injured for his trouble, it shortened his career considerably. Garoppolo seems to be more fragile than Romo was.

I know that kind of thing is where some of his star appeal comes from but if he wants his body to bear the stress of a full 16 games, especially with a mediocre offensive line, he needs to dial that back.

This is the two injuries that have taken time away from Jimmy G. Take a look at them and pay especial attention to how far away he is from any of the guys assigned to protect him

First the shoulder injury in 16

He's more than 10 yards from the nearest guy with a number in the 60s and 70s on his back. He was flushed, but Tom Brady dumps that ball at someone's feet, takes a controlled hit and lives to play another down. Garoppolo is trying to do a hero move instead and he pays the price.

Now the play in San Fran last year

Once again, he's flushed from the pocket and lets himself get herded until he's more than 15 yards from the nearest OL or TE. He's trying to convert a 4th down and the Chiefs break up the designed play, so he junks it and tries to play 1 v 11. At that point he's just begging to be hurt.

This is what he's got to cut out if he wants a long career. You can't put your body on the line like that for individual plays. He needs to learn to surrender the play in order to win the game.

Side note: I don't know who coaches the OL in San Francisco, but I wouldn't trust them to run a McDonald's. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the offensive linemen stop running once Jimmy G is flushed. Garoppolo isn't so fast that one of those big guys shouldn't be at least trying to close the distance using the angle in his favor and try to protect his guy. We've seen offensive linemen provide blocking down field for our players because Scar will get in their faces if they don't. There was no discipline in that crew of OLinemen and that helped their QB get hurt.

If I was a 49ers fan (and had some attention to detail) I'd be PO'd at the Oline coach

Yeah, we'll see. I think the shoulder injury suggests he may not be durable since that seemed to be a pretty standard hit. The ACL injury was a bad a choice by JG, but it was still a freak injury that is rather random. You would expect he might have gotten smashed by the defender for making that mistake, not this type of knee injury. At least that's how I viewed the play, that he tore his ACL before the contact.

It wasn't a big hit, but Garoppolo was focused on making a throw rather than protecting himself, and he had a bad fall. This, again, happened because he scrambled away from his protection and did not make good use of his blockers, and got hurt trying to make an all-or-nothing play in a situation that didn't require it.

Again, in the same situation TB wouldn't even try to make a play, he'd get rid of the ball, throw it to someone's feet if no one was open and live to play another down. Garoppolo didn't do that and he paid the price. I mean it's great that he has the physical talents to do that kind of thing, but there's a time and a place.

Exactly, not setting feet, rushing throw, inaccurate. I'm a Jimmy G fan but it was a scary performance. Clearly mental, hope he can overcome it.

Jimmy didn't set his feet before he got hurt either.

The inaccuracy is the only real worry, and this is a guy who hasn't played in nearly a year, his mechanics are probably rusty which affects his accuracy. Taking a minute to get his mechanics in order in training camp is reasonable.

Agreed. I felt bad for the guy. Foot work looked very inconsistent. Telegraphing passes and long windups. Looked nothing like the player he was in NE. Is SF coaching trying to chance his technique? Hope not.

I'm not going to bury a guy for a bad practice (PRACTICE?!) and a preseason game, but I really don't trust his durability at all at this point.

Imagine how incredibly stupid dumping Brady for Jimmy G would have been though. They started seriously calling for it in 2014 and then Brady got 3 more rings lmao.

I didn't notice the Ol's response but they had Joe Stanley #1 guy at LT and Chubb went past untouched. That whiff set the tone for Jimmy's performance. Maybe Shanahan isn't the great genius after all.

I agree it was beyond stupid in 2014 considering Brady was still in his prime with just some early struggles in the season; that, and no one even knew anything about Jimmy G since he was a rookie. Hence, Belichick rolled his eyes in the infamous "onto Cincinnati" press conference at the question of whether Brady would be benched/have competition.

In 2017 it was not stupid to ask whether or not Jimmy G was the long-term answer. Consider:
    • The Patriots celebrated in their draft room after selecting Jimmy G, and by all accounts, they saw him as their future QB, not a backup. Tom Brady Sr. told an interviewer that he was the succession plan to replace Tom.
    • He played extremely well during his limited time in 2016.
    • They ultimately traded him but held him for a kings ransom in the 2017 offseason because they still questioned who they'd be rolling with (with Brady at age 40.)
    • Considering that last point, I don't think the Patriots were concerned about his durability and inability to physically play the position.
While it is fun to assess some of the more extreme/bizarre takes from board members, mainly knee jerk ones after losses, etc. in 2017, the reality is that most people on PatsFans realized this was a complex decision involving Brady's age and shelf life and Jimmy G's talent level. I think virtually every Patriots fan wanted to have Jimmy G. succeed Brady if the timing worked out. I would still love to have him back after Tom retires, though I doubt that will happen.

I root for Jimmy G but he looked scared, tenative and his blocking was non existant he tried to throw 4 or 5 basically without stepping into them and they were just weak sauce, knocked down, off target or picked off. Very rough, I also crossed him out of my late QB fantasy option. He will need to show alot of improvement next week.
