OT: Football games in 3D...BE EXCITED

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

For 3D NFL to work, the broadcasts will have to be in 3D. I think the 2D-to-3D conversion used in the Samsungs is actually pretty good, but I don't think it will work well on football. Then it's up to the quality of the 3D TVs to make it enjoyable. The active-shutter glasses better eliminate left-eye/right-eye crosstalk completely. The passive glasses will solve that problem, but the resolution will be halved.

I saw 3D TVs for the first time at CES in January and came away underwhelmed. Then I saw the Samsungs in stores and was much more impressed...which wasn't hard considering my lowered expectations. The technology genuinely has a good chance to succeed and not be relegated as a gimmick, but the industry cannot mess up their opportunity which is now.

Regards,
Chris

I stand corrected, but at least they filmed always with the intention to convert it. Besides, the 3D imaging wasn't the problem with the movie. My problem with 3D is with the very rare exception (even whe it is filmed correctly) it really doesn't add anything to the movie other than a gimmick.

Personally, I think a lot of movies would suffer from 3D. Any good drama like say The Godfather would be cheapened by the experience. I think for many movies tradition 2D, high stock film makes the movie more rich and satisfying. 3D only has a chance of working for action, sci-fi, animation, and horror. So far, the experiences have been mixed at best. I personally think only Avatar has worked, but I saw it in 2D too and it worked just as well in IMHO.

i don't disagree with you on the quality of 3D movies. i've seen quite a few (gf likes them) and only Avatar has really added to the experience (though How To Train Your Dragin had its moments).

just remember that things will get much better. remember when Mario 64 was a breakthrough? those graphics are a joke these days. no one even considers 3D graphics in games anymore (they're just assumed).

i can see a future where the quality of 3D is much better and it is simply part of the overall experience rather than a "look at this" gimmick. you're making the mistake of assuming future 3D will be just like it is now (imagine someone using AOL on an old Compaq swearing that the internet would never be worth using). i think the industry is building towards a better 3D future and i don't fault anyone who doesn't want to pay to suffer through the process. i'm just glad that the process is going on and that people are willing to finance it.

My beef is the glasses. What if I have 5 friends over? Have to buy $500 worth of glasses just for that occasion? I wear regular glasses - I'd have to wear these over my normal ones. Take them off to glance at something i need to read, or go grab a beer, etc. Just seems very inconvenient to me.

Just wait until the technology matures and you don't need goofy glasses, the program content utilizes the technology appropriately and the 3D TVs don't require forgoing the family vacations.

Or you can imagine yourself a beautiful person and buy the immature technology now at high prices and high risk of obsolescence

Oh, don't get me wrong, I think 3D is fine and dandy, but I'm not prepared to jump in as an early adopter. I paid through the nose to get HDTV very early on, won't do that again :)

Gah, 3D.

I keep praying this doesn't catch on, but it just keeps getting more and more popular/mainstream.

The reason being, i can't see out of my right eye, and thus can't see in 3D.

Dude, you are not alone. Same with me -- haven't had vision in my right eye my entire life. I'm already frustrated not being able to see "Avatar" in 3D. I just hope it doesn't get to where we can't even watch television or ANY movie in the theater. Why can't they make 3D you can see without those dumb glasses?

Dont worry, they got stem cells for that now.

Stupid and insensitive comment. There are a lot of people with only one good eye for whom 3D will never be possible.

The only good thing about 3DTV becoming mainstream, is the rest of us that don't care, can get a shiny brand-new non-3D flat panel TV for pennies on the dollar.

So I say let it become popular!

SAME THING I WAS THINKING! Gotta admit, 3D makes me a lil dizzy

omg this

I would rather gouge out my eyes than watch something in 3D. Honestly, the only people that can like that must have broken eyes or just want to be trendy

That's my main concern as well, SDTV's are pretty hard to find these days. Will non 3DTv's also go the same way? More than likely i would bet.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

1) Does it have that stupid short/wide aspect ratio of HDTVs? That's the main reason I'm avoiding HDTV till I no longer have a choice. I don't care how clear or realistic a picture is if on closeups it cuts off the tops of the heads and chins of actors to show a lot of dead (but pretty) space on the sides.

The vast majority of things these days are done in mine for Widescreen which means nothing being chopped at the top/bottom. Not to mention most films are done in Widescreen as wells so you are pretty safe on those.

Every time I go to Best Buy I try the 3-D glasses with the different TV's...I get a headache every time...guess I'm screwed
