Risk vs Reward. If the money isn't right, there is no reason to put your health at risk. Everyone that makes this decision is doing the right thing.

It could easily be both. He's articulating the cost of playing in the NFL, could reasonably be that he isn't willing to pay that price for anything less than starter money.

To me, the details don't matter. I think for more and more guys the money matters less than the very real possibility of drooling in a wheelchair draped in an afghan at a relatively early age.
