OT: Crazy Story After Home Fire of Jets Player

I know someone else where his Tesla charger partially melted the main electrical board in the house (without further damage). Seems like there are issues with older boards/breakers that might have a bit of corrosion.

Very glad to see they were all OK.

Lithium battery fires are ferocious. Even with smaller batteries like the ones in phones and laptops, it’s important to pay attention and take action when they seem more hot than usual. More so than with other types of things, lithium battery fires involve chain reactions due to the nature of lithium itself and the complex blend of materials involved.

For a larger battery like the Tesla has, foam suppression is far superior to water, but a large volume of water is still needed. NFPA 1 which is the baseline for fire codes in many states now requires that commercial properties with indoor charging stations (such as what is being put in place at lots of residential, retail, and office buildings) be controlled with a foam suppression system. People who charge up at home should do so with the vehicle outside, away from other things thst an intense fire could ignite, and in the evening when it is cooler

Just to be clear, it was the charger, not the car that sparked the fire. So very likely the same issue that my friend had - a main board not up to the power draw.
The lithium battery stories have been continuing to seep out. I also heard of a scooter battery that caused a fire.

The batteries can also be very difficult to put out when they catch fire. It's a huge problem for the firefighters.

We are all getting EVs so better get used to these minor inconveniences...

Lithium batteries are nasty when things go wrong. A couple of months ago a pilot dropped a portable receiver with a lithium battery during his preflight. He couldn’t get it to power on after that so put it in his back seat to troubleshoot after his flight. Just before takeoff he saw smoke coming from the back seat. He got out but the plane was destroyed.

Think about it, just dropping the lithium battery was enough to trigger thermal runaway!

It's only the beginning.

Lithium batteries are like people, occasionally unstable.

Yet another Jete-related short circuit. Nothing to see here.

I'm not convinced it's a thing yet. Hybrid, 100%. We will all be driving hybrids. There's 100 years of American culture that's been altered and/or driven by the internal combustion engine. The automobile has allowed people unfettered mobility since it's invention, and that's all due to the ICE. Now, in basically a blink of an eye, Americans are going to adopt electric cars and all the infrastructure that goes with it? Count me thoroughly in the skeptic column. Quite simply, we do not have the ability to build the charge networks needed at this time. That might change, but it's not going to be overnight, no matter what guys like Elon Musk or Ford's Jim Farley and CEOs like them want.

Lithium batteries are a temporary evil while we figure out better tech that doesn't rely on such a limited resource. It's just something we're using to reduce the fossil fuel consumption right now, but it's not the long term solution. We haven't come up with the long term solution.

That's how I understand it from an old biochemist I know.

A lot of taxpayer dollars have gone to electric vehicle chargers and there's very little to show for it. Those dollars probably went up in smoke just like the batteries.

That makes the most sense.

We need the same singlemindedness that came with the development of the atomic bomb. Get all the best minds together and fix the problem.

Not good look for Tesla.
Thought about getting a Tesla for a minute and it was so hard to get unbiased information about their cars. Everyone was either a fanboy nut job or just hated everything they did because of Musk. Ultimately I am happy I didn't after seeing dozens of videos about how poorly some of the cars are put together. Ridiculous door gaps, too many junky plastic interior pieces, and issues charging and even removing the charger. And all that was before they released that ridiculous truck.

Fossil fuels ARE both the near-term AND long-term solution.
