OT: Calvin Johnson considering retirement

He'd probably cost a 3rd or 4th round pick (and barely any cap space) at this point.

If BB wants to try the draft instead again, so be it. The WR FA class is shallow and the few names will be getting paid big by other teams. Upgrading WR will be tough.

You may be right, but Gordon seems like a fairly risky pick. I'm also a bit skeptical as to whether or not he could be had for a 3rd/4th.

....and the appetite and pain threshold for a troubled player might be something the Browns just don't want to deal with right now.

Based on everything I've read Gordon has issues but there are players in this league that are actively playing that have done far worse.

If he does, then the Lions have ruined the careers of two of the 'greats' at their respective positions because they let the meat spoil do to their ineptitude and suck factor. I absolutely loved watching Barry Sanders play football and is my all-time favorite running back. Calvin Johnson seems like a stand-up guy on and off the field and would've put up unreal #'s if he had played with Tom Brady.

Reasonable is assumed since we're talking about the Pats, here, but what message are you sending to a guy like Edelman if you pay Megatron that much, even if it is a one year deal?

Edelman busted his ass for a lot less since he resigned with us.

On a personal level I agree, but if BB has proven anything it doesn't matter. It's about winning football games, a contract is a contract, therefore you are expected to honor it. He will improve the team any way he sees possible and it's "business", feelings or no feelings.

I dont think you meant to say it that way but I would hardly call the careers of Barry Sanders and Megatron ruined by the stench of the Lions' suckiness.

Their excellence and legacy stands on it's own merit.

Its a shame that the organization consistently surrounded them with sub-standard talent and coaches.

Although the Lions in the 90s made the playoffs pretty consistently. Just weren't built to beat the elite teams.

They come off hot a 15-1 season with their douchebag QB most probably being MVP.

Not to take up the other Argument, but the Idea that it'd be "more likely that he ends up in Carolina if he just wants to sign with a contender." seems odd to me. Carolina is a Contender, yes, but as a serious perennial Championship Contender, the Patriots and SeaHawks are in a League of their own.

You'd be hard pressed to argue that Carolina's in the same Class as us, much less above it.

Correct. I didn't mean it that way, but I think Barry might have played longer and not retired so soon had he been on a team that consistently competed. I know he played in one NFCCG, but they didn't seem very committed to surround him with the required personnel to compete with the likes of Dallas.

I agree but CAR is a consistent playoff (ahem....7-8-1 last year) participant. That is already light years ahead of DET. If Mega is truly posturing, at this point in his career 4 things would seemingly be important to him.

1. Top 10 Qb...CAR- check
2. Good team, stable, decent coach....CAR...check
3. Money. CAR will have plenty to spend in 2016.... check
4. Touches. CAR lacks a top WR if Benjamin can't come all the way back....check

Plus its somewhat near GA, his home state.

I don't think it is personal for BB, I think it is a business decision as well. He rarely brings in people who are making more than the other long time team vets at the same position because he always talks about managing a roster and a lockerroom not for just one season but to be consistently competitive.

It's not just the message you're sending to Julian it's the message you're sending to anyone else who has taken a sweetheart deal to stay with this team. I'm not saying it never happens, but I think they are careful when they do.

Which is why I'd love to see Megatron here on a some sort of incentives-based deal.

Giving extensions to Jone and Hightower would free up quite a bit of money. They also need to get extension done for Ryan and Butler.
I don't see the O-line being the issue some people claim. Especially when you consider that they've had 3 rookies starting on the interior at various times, not to mention that they are on their 5th LT and had 4 different people playing RT. Most teams that have that issue are drafting in the top half of the draft.. Not making the play-offs.

In my honest opinion, the Patriots are very well set going into this off-season. Much like they were going into the 2006 off-season, where they had all 53 positions set before the draft and used picks to bring in Welker and Moss. The only position of "real concern" is RB and that is because of the questionable status of Lewis. They will need a "bigger" back, but they may have that in Tyler Gaffney. But I do expect the Pats to use a draft pick there. Probably their 3rd rounder.

If Calvin Johnson is released, I think you'd see many teams line up for him. The big question will not be who does he want to play for. The big question will be who will throw ridiculous money at him and will Johnson take that or will he want to play for a contender like the Pats at a respectable amount..

Lombardi was part of the front office that tried trading him away. The owner wouldn't let them do it. This isn't just a drug issue at all. The guy sounds like he's a nightmare to coach too.
