OT: Braylon Edwards arrested with DUI

I feel for Braylon. Sometimes it's easy to go overboard while celebrating a (week 2) Super Bowl win.

Haven't read all the posts on here so I'm sure this has been addressed already. This is Braylons first substance issue, which by definition of the NFL rules means he won't be suspended by the NFL, and will instead be entered in a substance abuse program.

However, this is the "new" NFL under Goddell, so you never know. I've conducted a POLL on the Jets official message board and Jets fans are voting unanimously in favor of at least a one game suspension by the team, even if the NFL does not require it. Personally, I think the Jets should suspend him also.

This isn't a substance abuse issue.

DUI is quite different than substance abuse.

This from ESPN's Tim Graham: "The NFL also could suspend Edwards if he already is in their substance-abuse program, which we would not know after the first offense because it's confidential for first-time offenders. The second offense carries a four-game suspension. " Maybe you know a little more than Tim Graham huh?

Alcohol falls under the substance policies of the NFL. The Personal conduct policy does not apply here unless there was an altercation with the police officer or any other individual.

This is not a substance abuse issue. It is a personal conduct issue. For which Edwards has already had issues.

It was 5:15 in the morning on 34st & 12th ave. The only people he'd take out on that corner at that time of day are hookers on their last go-around for the night. lol. He was standing with tinted windows. That's prolly what those guys were doing over there. classic.

I just hope they don't throw hottie Lindsay back in tha clink for her latest failed drug test. Hey, send her over to my apartment for house arrest instead. Throw in a couple a kilos while yer at it. I wouldn't have to leave my place for weeks! ehhh haaa haaa.

I got yer holier than tho.

5 am is a normal time for NYers to be out and about after weekend partying, but you're right, not on a Sunday night. 34th and 12th is Penn Station, right? Also some people getting ready for the Monday morning commute north, maybe. Irony: on the corner of 34th and 12th, well that's where the website PassDrugTest.Net offices are located.

This is Braylons first substance issue
We don't know that for certain, entry into the program is confidential and sometimes that confidentiality actually works.

This isn't a substance abuse issue.

DUI is quite different than substance abuse.
I think the CBA basically lumps them together.

Yes, I apparently do.

What part of this don't you understand?

Drinking alcohol: not illegal
Drinking and driving: illegal

Abusing alcohol: may get you in trouble with NFL, I really don't care--ex Jet exec Goodell is a big time arse--no surprise.

Drinking and driving: I care--throw the book at him.

You're the only one here who can't distinguish between substance abuse and DUI.

Look up Donte Stallworth.

Nope, it doesn't. See Stallworth.

Hey look, a guy who knows what he's talking about. Thank you!
As for it being his first offense, you are right. No one can know for sure. But I have it on good word that this is his first.

Wow, you're trying real hard to be right aren't you. Donte Stallworth killed someone. That was the difference between a DUI and Stallworth. Edwards was not involved in an accident. I'm sorry you seem so eager to be right, but you're not. Maybe you're still upset about the loss. Relax, it was just one loss.

Does the good word tell you it's his last as well? They ought to just dump the moron and bring back Coles. At least he has a brain.

NFL's substance abuse program INCLUDES alcohol. Here's the link: http://news.findlaw.com/legalnews/sports/drugs/policy/football/index.html

Most Jets fans didn't think before this incident that he would be a Jet next season anyhow. Everyone seems to want Holmes. I'm pretty sure this sealed the deal for Holmes. We are all hoping that the Jets do the right thing and suspend Edwards for one game, even though that likely means a loss to the Dolphins. If they wait until Holmes is off his suspension, I'd be disappointed.

Hmmm, my impression was the Stallworh accident and death caused the incident to be handled differently than a pure DUI.

I know I heard one talking head this morning on ESPN say this IS covered by the substance abuse policy, but it's not uncommon for them to get it wrong this early in the story's life. They are experts in name only, few of them can speak authoritatively about anything off the top of their head.

incarcerated bob (incarceratedbob) on Twitter

**BREAKING NEWS** NY Jets will make him inactive for Miami game & internally it will be a suspension. NFL can not suspend him but Jets can

I've been looking around on previous DUI/NFL suspensions and everything I've found had the player on probation from a previous offense. Then I started looking in places like PFT, ESPN and others and the official line is that this falls under the substance abuse policy, and that the consequence for a first offense DUI "will generally be" a fine of two game checks, with a maximum of $50,000. So, it doesn't mean that Goddell can't or won't do something different, but for those of you who claimed it was automatic, keep reading in your spare time.

You're wrong.

It falls under personal conduct. There is no separate statute in the CBA for manslaughter.

You actually think DUI is substance abuse but hitting someone with your car makes it different? So the NFL looks at this differently from the law? Yeah right.

For a first offense of personal conduct, he may not get anything. That's a whole other argument.

But I guarantee you that DUI falls under the personal conduct policy.

Read up on Vincent Jackson. It says BOLDFACE in all the articles on Jackson that it falls under personal conduct.

His second DUI conviction, Jackson was subject to the NFL's personal-conduct policy.
