Surprised by your pick of Cassel over Welker, Mankins, Wilfork, Light etc. Talib surprised me too.

Talib was a huge loss when he got hurt during the '13 AFCCG against Denver

In some of those years, there were players other than Brady who were the most valuable Patriot. Even in years that are not 2008.

Brady's one guy on the team, as great as he is, there have been years where another player carried the squad, especially early on when the defense was doing a lot of the heavy lifting and Brady hadn't fully found his game yet.

Sure, maybe I could have called it MVP of Pats other than Brady. Brady's importance is undeniable. I was just curious who else everyone felt was the most important to the franchise that year.

Yeah, that was what prompted it for me.

And Cassel held down the fort as well as could have been reasonably expected. His later garbage seasons shouldn't detract from that IMO. There are good arguments for lots of other people obviously.

Tough task. Seeing a list without Troy Brown, Tedy Bruschi or Willie McGinest on it seems awkward.

Cassel basically lost 5 more regular season games than Brady did the year before with basically the same roster and IIRC, against an easier schedule.

I agree that Cassel played reasonably well but he wasn't the 2nd most valuable guy on that team. imo.

As answers come in, remember this for 2016:

Marcus Cannon Capped Career Year By Dominating Vic Beasley In Super Bowl LI

"Beasley, who led the NFL in sacks this season with 15 1/2, finished with zero sacks and hit quarterback Tom Brady just once in the Patriots’ 34-28 overtime victory. He also did not record a single tackle"

Our All-Pro RT gave up just 1 QB hit on 62 pass attempts to the NFL's sack leader.

Considering Gronk was on IR, I can't think of a Patriot who played at a higher level in 2017 than Cannon. Maybe McCourty.

If we have just an average RT, Beasley ends 2 drives on those 60+ attempts and the comeback is dead.

Agree with most lists. The difference in defense quality with & without Talib in 2012/2013 was huge. He held Jimmy Graham to 0 receptions & took Julio out of the game.

Cannon was quietly GREAT in 2016 after being a liability before then. Scar is the man.

This whole thread should be about the 3rd most valuable Patriot.
