It's been a few weeks since I stayed at a holiday inn express, but a sprain IS a partial tear right?

You can sprain any ligament in your knee, its obviously the severity that counts. With a mild sprain its just sore you can walk on it but with a limp.

He is not wrong - an ACL looks most likely. But that is why they make MRIs.

He gets the obvious things right but anything complicated and it's anyone's guess

a sprain is a tear, just not a severe one. So it could happen

Trained staff can identify an ACL tear on the field. It's apparently a really easy thing to test.

The MRI can surprise, but usually in showing an ACL tear that was not obvious on exam.
