If I am reading 2021 practice squad primer: Everything to know from the rules to the eligibility correctly you can have up to six veterans and up to four protected players on the PS with no upper limit on salary, subject to the salary cap of course.

The link I provide contradicts that.

Not sure if this is just a COVID relaxation or what...
Here’s an article posted by the Sporting News today which says there is a restriction on PS salaries:
When are NFL roster cuts 2021? Deadline date, rules, practice squad salary & more to know

Here is the CBA itself, although it doesn’t reflect the Covid changes. Article 33 Section 2(c)
https://nflpaweb.blob.core.windows....-Bargaining-Agreement-Final-Executed-Copy.pdf

It’s possible that the salary restriction being lifted was a COVID change that the SF article found and Sporting News didn’t. Given the level of detail in the Sporting News article… and just plain looking at the sources…. I’m inclined to believe the Sporting News. We’ll see.

I think they're going to keep him and Harry on the 53, then place Harry on short term IR and bring back one of the initial cuts (someone like Hoyer, who you know would rather stay here and isn't losing out on a real contract by being cut initially). I think with Gunner still not looking real smooth at WR, and no other real options, Wilkerson gets the early season to prove he is coming along there. Then when Harry is ready to come back, assuming no other injuries, you make another decision there.

My final 53 projection ahead of Tuesdays deadline:

QB (3) C.Newton, M.Jones, B.Hoyer
RB (5) D.Harris, J.White, R.Stevenson, J.Taylor, J.Johnson
WR (6) N.Agholor, J.Meyers, K.Bourne, K.Wilkerson, G.Olszewski, M.Slater
TE (3) J.Smith, H.Henry, D.Asiasi
C (2) D.Andrews, T.Karras
G (2) S.Mason, M.Onwenu
T (4) I.Wynn, T.Brown, Y.Cajuste, J.Herron
DE (2) D.Wise, H.Anderson
DT (4) L.Guy, D.Godchaux, C.Barmore, C.Davis
ILB(2) D.Hightower, J.Bentley
OLB(5) M.Judon, K.VanNoy, C.Winovich, J.Uche, R.Perkins
CB (8) S.Gilmore, J.Jackson, J.Jones, J.Mills, M.Bryant, J.Williams, S.Wade, J.Bethel
SS (2) K.Dugger, A.Phillips
FS (2) D.McCourty, C.Davis
ST (3) N.Folk, J.Bailey, J.Cardona

A few notes:

- Harry makes the initial 53, but is moved to IR and someone else is brought back (my guess Hoyer).

- Hoyer ultimately comes back because with Covid you want the insurance, and he can run the scout team allowing Mac to focus on his own playbook, even if he's the backup.

- I have a LOT of CB's listed, but here's why: First, Bethel and maybe Wade are going to be primarily ST players to start. Bryant and Mills are more hybrid CB/S types, and Dugger is more hybrid S/LB. So I really view it like this:

Deep Safety - McCourty, Mills, Bryant
Box Safety - Dugger, Phillips
Corner - Gilmore, Jackson, Jones, Williams
ST - Bethel, Davis, Wade (with Wade having a chance at other roles as he develops).

My roster doesn't have Bolden or Langi on it, so it's also possible one of them makes it as a ST guy and we drop one of the extra CBs. But this is what I'm going with for now.

Start Mac-10

Was on a road trip during the game so tried to listen to the game on SiriusXM. The Pats radio team (Zo & Bob) are horrible, in no way could you follow what was happening in the game. Never told basic stuff such as down, distance, field position, who was on the field, etc. They acted like two guys drinking beer, watching the game on TV and commenting on plays (nice catch, he should have had it.....). New England deserves better. I switched to the Giants broadcast to at least be able to follow the action (though according to the NY team, the Pats committed a penalty on every.single.play).
Zo is a sports talk buffoon not a broadcaster.

He’s not super Cam anymore he’s not even Cam Kent.
Best way to describe Cam is someone outmatched and can’t win a game can’t manage a game.
Damaged Goods.
I'm not a fan of Cam, but he managed to win seven starts last year according to Cam Newton Stats | Pro-Football-Reference.com

I'd prefer to see Mac for many different reasons, but IMO Cam has looked somewhat better in practice and pre-season games than he did last season.

I know that's not saying much, but it is what it is.

We’re all excited to see the Mac era begin. I was definitely in the slowly being him along camp, but after watching him all offseason, I say swing for the fences and let the kid grow. I also keep seeing this argument that riding the bench won’t do him any good. That makes 0 sense. Many qb’s have gotten used to the speed of the game on practice, scout team etc. If he doesn’t fleet the starting nod, it’s not the end of the world for his development. He’ll keep getting better. Let’s just hope Cam can keep the ship afloat until that time comes.
Tony Dungy was asked on SNF what he thought and he said he thought playing Payton as a rookie was the right move and playing Mac would be too.

I hope BB comes around to that point of view.

It’s possible that the salary restriction being lifted was a COVID change that the SF article found and Sporting News didn’t. Given the level of detail in the Sporting News article… and just plain looking at the sources…. I’m inclined to believe the Sporting News. We’ll see.
Agree, Sporting News is a great source, it's not likely they'd miss something like that, but we'll see.

Some national media level commentary...

Pats drafts have been way better with Eliot Wolf, Groh, Patricia. The last 2 drafts. Drafts from 2013-2019 were crap and partially caused Brady to leave eventually. Also love how BCG is re-tweeting others, hoping nobody remembers how he kept hyping Trey Lance as the best QB pre-draft, dissing Mac Jones pre-draft , and also dissing DTs and Barmore. Basically do the exact opposite of BCG or anyone who studied at John Carroll and the team will continue to get better.

I get more excited about this guy every time he touches the ball. My expectations for Stevenson have officially reached the unreasonable level.

Remember to keep it PG-rated

Zero sacks… that’s “flashed?” He got schooled repeatedly trying to play contain on the edge.

They could put him on some faux injury list (Foxboro flu) or try sneaking him on the practice squad but he hasn’t been good enough to keep on the active roster.

You don’t compound a draft mistake by being stubborn. Bill drafted Duke Dawson in the second round, he lasted about as long as a cup of coffee before Bill traded him.
I'm not sure you understand how either football or roster management work.

If the Patriots were to try to get Hoyer on the PS, I'm pretty sure he'd be on the next flight to NY to sign with the Jets. He played in that scheme in SF, he'd be a great mentor for Zach Wilson, and I'd say he's probably better than Mike White anyway.
