We spent the amount of money we spent because we were behind the curve after eating TB12's "voidable years" dead cap hit plus a few more other ones. It was not a "win now" move, it was a "catch up to where we should have been" move. One podcast I admire is getting this wrong since they don't really understand the Pats all that well, and it's frustrating to listen to. We still have lots of cap space for next season and most of our draft capital as well, whereas "win now" would drain all those things down as well.

Do they, though? Overthecap estimates our 2022 cap space at $20.5m when taking into account the top 51 rule. That’s 18th out of 32 so middle of the pack. But the rankings don’t take into account the specific circumstances for each team:

• The Patriots have a lot of upcoming free agents: Gilmore, McCourty, Hightower, JC Jackson, Philips, Trent Brown, White, Karras, and Slater as upcoming free agents. The first 6 of those guys are part of the team’s core.
• McCourty’s situation itself is unique. His deal voids automatically like Brady’s did. If he’s not extended prior to free agency, $4.3m of cap charges are accelerated to 2022 - effectively leaving the team with 16.2m in cap space which would knock the Patriots to 22nd out of 32 teams.

Point is, I’m concerned most of the cap space will be spent resigning these guys or signing what they hope are competent replacements. And therefore very little of the cap space will be left for actual upgrades. Extending Wynn would be the easiest way open up a whole lot more space.

They‘ll need to start hitting in the draft more to get real improvements. Mac and Barmore look good so far and hopefully Rham will get out of the doghouse; that’s a good start. We need that to continue.

I think it is interesting that Roberts knew our play. Flores really had them prepared for us.

I don’t think it’s that interesting at all…Roberts did play here for a few years. Why wouldn’t he be familiar with the play (or at the very least, what he thought the play might be based on his personal experience)?

Missing the first 2 practices, generally not a good sign for either of them playing Sunday. Funny, I thought if anyone would have gotten a throat injury from Sunday it would have been Harris or Rham when they choked the ball away, not Van Noy.

Confident players can break. We've all seen it. It's one of the reasons coaches so often protect their rookie QBs. It's why Fields wasn't the Bears week one starter.

The sole fact that Pats are one of the very few teams that did not use any cap saving measures this yr (extensions, restructures, void yrs) tells you Pats cap is in healthy shape and no one has to lose any sleep over it

They will have plenty flexibility next yr to upgrade the roster & keep FAs they want - loads of cap available in restructuring this yrs big signings etc.
They are #8 in 2023 effective cap space - loads of room to be used there . & they will use it bc they know 2023/24 cap will skyrocket and bc they want to have cap on the field.
(btw - even cap hell teams were at the end able to do plenty this yr..)

It is another deep OL draft, safety looks good as well so hopefully they take advantage.

Reconstructing DB will be the biggest task. BB is far from shy making big moves there so should be fun.
It would be nice hitting on DBs in the Draft but BB will want to have the unit solidified beforehand.

Having healthy Gilmore back and reasonably extended would be a great first step

Spotrac's estimating 27 million, but your point holds.

They have a lot more contracts they can push, though. Judon and Smith, for example, and signing Wynn to an extension could lower his 2022 cap hit (not sure of the rules on that for a 5th year option).

Jackson will be a big hit if they sign him, but probably not in the first year.

Hightower, Slater, McCourty, and Gilmore? Hard to predict - I think they're all gone to retirement or greener pastures.

Brown will be interesting to monitor.

Karras will be back cheap, or won't be back, I think.

Manageable.

White's back cheap this year - would have to be the same next year.

Phillips would be a big loss, but he might get more than the Pats will pay, given his performance here.

Great point - thank you, I didn’t even think of looking at 2023 despite looking at 2022. And you’re correct, they are in great shape there. If Judon and Agholor keep up their fast starts, those are two obvious candidates for extensions / restructuring that could open up $15m+ in additional space if needed.

No, 2026. 5th year option won’t be $50m. It’ll be higher than what he’s being paid now, no doubt, but not top QB salary. 5th year option for 2022 QB salaries is 18.858M, it’ll increase for 2025 of course but not to 30-50m. And most likely that would be the point where the team would work out an extension, so that would keep the 2025 cap charge relatively low.

Don't agree. They started fast in both halves, but NE dominated the TOP and almost all of the entire second half. NE was very prepared, they just had some mistakes. They gave the game away.
