What you say is true, the game is won or lost in the trenches. Imo, though, the trench game has devolved, blocking and tackling have never been worse. Not enough practice anymore, and what we see on Sundays are multi-whiffs on both sides of the line.

Can't help but feel the (ahem) evolution of college offenses to featuring the RPO more and more leading to both lineman and QB's being significantly less Pro ready has also been a contributing factor. Players who've taken comparitively few snaps in anger with a QB under center have a lot of adjustments to make and less padded up practice time to do it in

Sure why not. Mayo playing 5D chess baby

Ok, I'm going to preface this with the fact that I don't know the inner workings to coaching an OL that much, but:

What the hell is up with this merry-go-round? I have to believe that continually shuffling through different rotations helps no one get better at their position, and furthermore, it doesn't help players feel confident at all if your coach is constantly showing worry by shuffling players - suggesting that nothing is working. At some point, they have to build familiarity, no?

I dunno, am I wrong?

Easy, he's a rookie with special talent.

Even with a mediocre OL (which we don't have), it often takes two years to know what you have in a rookie QB. Having a high school level OL makes it almost futile to even try to evaluate.
But we could find out he is the savior only to see him go the way of Andrew Luck.
Either way, we better be drafting OT, OT next year regardless of whether Maye doesn't play at all, plays amazingly, or plays poorly.

So everybody thought about Zac Wilson, Trey Lance, and Justin Fields etc. You don't know what you really have until they actually play. You need to find out before next years draft if he's going to be another bust or not.

How about Cole Cole Strange at LT?? he can't be any worse than what we currently have.

Not sure how that's the line's fault, it is either play design or Brissett's fault. The end is pretty wide the play calls for the left guard to come all the way across the formation to block the free rusher, Jacoby should have seen that was not possible and either audibled the RB to not fake and to block or he should have rolled left and back. Compare that to Maye in the Eagles game, same concept, completely unblocked rusher, Maye runs back away and drops ball in for the TE screen.

Jacoby never looks there, knowing that should be a free rusher in most scenarios, can't blame the line, it's either the play design or Jacoby, considering Maye had a similar play the week before and was able to avoid the free rusher I'd lean toward the QB that has a history of bad QB play.

FYI, TE was held and not called, if he was able to get loose, they had 2 blockers and 1 defender on that side of the ball, in that way the play design was great.

Neither play or Brissett's fault. I don't have replay but as best as I can remember, Sow was doing a fake pull and his job was to wall off the free man, but he ran into someone (RG?) who got put on skates and pushed back right into his path.

It’s actually insane people wanted to trade back and take OT or WR with how talented Maye is. Maye is #1 pick most years.
We don't know how good any of the young QB's are until we see them actually play real games. It's just as likely Drake Maye isn't on the team in 2027 and we are crying about how we lost out on Harrison or Alt having HOF careers because we were forced to take a gamble on the third overall QB

The level of play is ridiculously more high in the NFL compared to other sports coming from college. NFL speed is breakneck compared to college.

A lot of people point towards the 2011 CBA, something apparently OL coaches in particular pointed out as a danger.

Defensive lines are insane now. Edge rushers are freak athletes. The disparity there is wild. Defense is far more simple, as well, compared to OL play. Less adjustment there for the defense I think.

OL isn't a big time paid and fun position. It's probably the most punishing position unit, it has little to no "glory" on the stat sheet (it's not flashy), otherwise I can just play DL, get paid more, and get hurt less. OL takes a very specific person, and therefore, a very specific coach.

On that note, I think there is a lack of OL coaches who have found a way to adjust to the 2011 CBA. Which is made worse by the college game looking and feeling different from the NFL.

It's too many things working against the OL now. It's wild to me that there hasn't been a push to improve league-wide because it'd be wholly beneficial to every single player on the field. Better pass protection = better passing stats = fantasy numbers. Better OL play = safer QB. Better OL play = more running yards.

That being said, the Patriots line just sucks more ass than most lmao.

If you watch in in slo-mo, there was zero chance Sow could get to that guy regardless of Robinson getting pushed back. Freeze frame it on Sow's second step and the defenders second step. Not a chance in a million plays Sow ever can get there.
But you could see that was going to happen just from how they lined up. You need to anticipate a free rusher on that play.

Or conversely, those two flame out and Maye has the HoF career.

You don't know. I don't know.

I don't have replay, but I see what you're saying. In this case I would blame the RB for not eyeballing the free rusher. Since it's a PA, he has no other job anyway.

You don't know. I don't know.
Which is why it's silly to critcize people's opinions on a situation that isn't developed.

You can’t make this sh*t up.

Every day he is flip flopping
Mayo talks a lot and is so ambivalent. Talking like a high schooler.

I wish he could hold some chips close to his chest .

I'll take a delay rather than serious injury. I can't imagine he lasts 17 games behind this line, and if he does, his body will have taken 3 seasons worth of beating.
Brissett might feign injury to get his millions and stay in NFL for another 4-5 seasons as opposed to retiring after this season.

At this point do not release zappe.

This is a good point, but see below.

Will Kraft play the long game or the short game? That's what it comes down to. Certainly Maye is likely to put butts in the seats early in the season, but the risks are serious injury to the franchise QB, instilling bad habits in and perhaps ruining a very young QB (turtle under pressure, form breakdowns because he's always rushing, screwing with his confidence, etc.), and sucking in future years by having to draft more QBs early and not OLs or positions of need at the top of the draft. Years of futility will put even fewer butts in the seats. Nah, Kraft will play the long game, if he's smart.
Is Maye made of paper mache or something? All this talk about injury. Maye should just sit with the Krafts this season and stay safe. Wear a mask because of Monkey Pox.

Must say I am definitely on the Maye train. Impressed with how he’s working with what is in front of him (****). I’d like to ponder how Mac would have done in this situation. Not sure how it’s possible but it looks like we are far worse off this year OL wise than last year which I did not think was remotely possible. Gona go out on a limb here and say Mr Strange is much needed and hope his return is sooner rather than later and hope he comes in ready to have a great year/recovery. I cannot fathom how/why these dudes are doing what they’re doing. Lining up 3 times too far from the los…amateur hour. So what if they just told them about the change…when they’re all in the huddle, ****in remind them to not do that. QB/team leader on O could do it. Not that difficult to figure out. The bad snaps, and I think k we will be finding out who’s fault it it when Mr Andrews plays, need to stop as well. Could it be Maye isn’t use to being under center still? Would not explain the **** snaps from the gun though…there’s a few OL available but not sure of the quality. If they don’t pick someone up, even to kick the tires on em, there’s something seriously wrong. I’d claim someone from waivers and seriously try for a FA or pry someone via trade. We will be on our 6th string QB by week 7 if not.

Edit: Sorry about the book! :O

I don't think it is fair to evaluate Mayo by what he says in a press conference. It really doesn't matter what he says.

What matters is what happens on the field.
I agree with 50% of that.
When the team is doing well, I agree it really doesn't matter what you say.
When the team sucks, it matters big time and could get you fired.
