A few things on the questionable offensive playcalls that I noticed after watching highlights again this morning:
1) On Bolden's failed 3rd and 1 carry, I had forgotten that they'd basically succeeded with that on two other 3rd and shorts earlier in the game, with Bolden. You can still argue that they went to that well too many times (and I won't argue against it) but at least it was a call that HAD worked twice before. Which when the same criticisms are levied later about "Do what's working, why overthink it", you have to take into account.
2) I don't have a problem, in principle, with them throwing on 3rd and 4th and goal from the 1. If the Chargers were stacking the box and you thought you had a matchup you could exploit, you trust Mac to be careful with the football and take your shot. I don't even necessarily have a problem with the play/route called on 4th down, but my question is: Why design that look to go to Meyers? Fade routes and jump balls aren't really his game, and we (theoretically) have Harry here to do just that. And Goal Line is a good time to have Harry out there anyway, because he's a decent blocker when you do run the ball.
Interestingly enough, two plays before that I think, they were setting up for a play where Bolden was out wide, then motions back in and it appeared at the time that he was going to take a pitch from Mac, but the Chargers called timeout before the play so it was stopped. That same motion happened later in the 4th quarter on the 2-pt conversion following the Phillips pick-6, and the pitch was actually a fake, with the ball then going to Meyers. I have to believe that was the play call on the previous look too, and it's too bad the Chargers called timeout because it's likely Meyers gets his first TD and those 3rd/4th down calls never have to happen.
