He did, but he could have another Purdy in Mac as backup in case of another injury, and he would have the next 1.5 years of Mac’s rookie deal to evaluate him and see if he thinks maybe there’s a higher ceiling in that offense. That might be worth a 3rd to a Super Bowl caliber team.

I just don’t know if the 49ers would use a higher draft pick on a back up. They have traded away so many picks for Lance and McCaffrey in recent years.

They are projected to have 12 picks next year though including three 3’s so it seemed fair. Trey Lance, who has done nothing, got a 4th, so Mac valuing at a 3rd seems to make sense considering he has starting experience.
