I am wondering if perhaps Bill specifically wanted O'Brien as his next OC, but O'Brien could not come until 2023 so Bill needed a stopgap. He felt Patricia, Judge and himself could manage things for a season and then they could bring in O'Brien to build things up further the year after. Obviously it didn't go well and he underestimated the complexity of the job and the capabilities of Patricia and Judge, but he wasn't going to go bring in someone else when he already has plans in place for an OC in '23, so he rode it out.
O'Brien makes a lot of sense, if they're going to go back to more of the older system. But, if they're going to keep trending towards the flavor of the month offenses, they'd be better off poaching someone from that coaching tree.
I love having to have the "pool report" take with the officials after every god damned Patriots game to ask them why the hell they chose to do what they did.
Every week someone finds a way to lose the game for the team !! Been that kind if a drain. I am looking forward to the off season to see what happens and where we go from here .

Yeah, I'm not really sure what the thinking is on that front. Perhaps they will try to do both - add O'Brien but also blend in some zone concepts? I'm really not sure. It simply feels like Belichick was in over his head on this one.

Reporters have said that they've known BB to want to move to a bit more of the Shanahan system for a while, and have opined that Brady was the reason that didn't happen. But, be that as it may, we can see that the Weiss/O'Brien/McDaniels system is still very effective in the NFL, and was good for Jones.
So, while I can understand the idea of being interested in change, it didn't make sense to push it the way BB did, given the QB he has under center. The whole point of the Shanahan system is to make it idiot proof at the QB position, and it only works if you've got a lot of offensive talent at positions other than QB. The strength of Jones is supposed to be his intelligence. So BB effectively drafted a Brainiac and then drew up a "game plan" for a jock.
However, let's say Miami does lose tomorrow. I can see a situation where NE beats Miami next week, Buffalo beats Cincinnati next week and KC loses to Denver (Denver was playing well against them last time and nearly won). If that happened, Buffalo could rest their starters in the final game and still keep the #1 seed, allowing an NE win. Stranger things have happened!
I can see Bills playing NE hard no matter the scenario.... scratch that - hmmm now I'm thinking Bills lost to Dolphins and then narrowly beat them for the 2nd game, so I can see them "resting" their players to guarantee the Dolphins don't make it in. Phins are a way bigger threat than the Pats to the Bills.
This was the difference in the second half. Although people do not like his belly aching and i get it. But this has been what he was frustrated with. They keep doing the same h.s. "paint by numbers" on offense week in and week out. I do not know how many teams have to come in here and told you they know what the pats are going to do on offense.
i do not know why on their last red zone trip they didnt just staytrying to get Bourne the ball. Like you do not have a "rub route" on your play sheet. Bourne and Mac started cooking a little.
