OTOH ...
Casillas is 30, turns 31 in June.
Signed with the Giants as a Pats UFA in 2015 for a $2.67M APY.
Started 31 games at ILB/OLB for the Giants over three his seasons since leaving the Pats (full time starter from second half of 2015 through 2017).
Posted 206 tackles, 13 PD, a pick, 3.5 sacks in 31 games. Also played ST.
Missed half of 2017 with a neck stinger that he played through for 3 games before landing on IR.

If he's healthy, he's likely to be available on a veteran minimum deal (~$1M). Adds an experienced insurance body to the 90-man roster at LB for cheap. Seems like the kind of thing the Pats might do.
You good Sir, are a WINNER!

quite a competition..

Why? Casillas can cover sideline to sideline and is better against the run. He's not the answer to the issues at LB, but he would be a very nice piece to have.

expected. played well in NYG. could mean M.Flowers outpriced himself..

IDK about M. Flowers. AFAIK, there were a couple vague tweets 3 days ago about "other teams having interest" and not a peep since. He may be discovering that his market value isn't any higher than what the Pats (may or may not have) offered.

Anyway, I wouldn't necessarily expect signing Casillas (cheaply) to preclude also re-signing Flowers (relatively cheaply).

They're not mutually exclusive. And signing both doesn't preclude the Pats from spending a couple draft picks on LBs.

There are currently 25-30 spots available on the off-season roster, and clearly there's a significant need for competition, experience and just plain old healthy bodies for the LB corps.

Another player I think would be a great addition, and might be the biggest steal of FA is, Eric Reid. I haven't heard one zip of his name throughout the entire FA period.

He also graded out fairly well last season.

Patrick Chung is aging, and Reid remainds me so much of him, just more athletic. Could be a great way to replace the SS postion with another steal of a singing.

Also, lets not forget, when bill drafts his younger brother in the 1st, they could play together. lol

A lot of people forget how good he was at LSU. Was part of the "DBU" era at LSU When Tyrann Mathieuu, Patrick Peterson, and him all played together. He is 6'2 215lbs with good speed (4.52), and eye popping, 33 3/4 inch arms, 40 inch vert, and a 6.85 3 cone. His early career years were wasted in SF. He's never had any major injuries and is just 26 years old.

As of right now, he might be my #1 target.

Something like 3 years 18-28million, with 10-12 Guaranteed. I could easily live with that. Word is, he's not drawing interest because his anthem protest. #steal

This is what BR NFL 1000 scouting had to say about him.

  1. Eric Reid was good everywhere. The fact he still lost his starting spot tells you how good Jaquiski Tartt was. Reid excelled in the box. He was aggressive against the run and didn't miss too many tackles. He had no problem going out wide or playing in slot coverage, either. Look for the impending free agent to have a big impact for whoever he plays for.

    —NFL1000 DB Scout, Kyle Posey

The 49ers asked Reid to play a host of roles in 2017—everything from "moneybacker" to deep safety—and he took every challenge with aplomb. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh had Reid at the line of scrimmage a lot, where he could blitz, shoot the gaps to stop the run or drop into curl/flat coverage based on the defense. He has become one of the NFL's more versatile safeties and would be a major asset for any team looking to expand its nickel and dime coverage looks.

    —NFL1000 Lead Scout Doug Farrar

High on my list as well - although I do hope D.Jones and Travis showed enough progress to take over Richards on D. But a true hybrid LB/S/ST addition would be more than welcome and something BB is trying to find for last couple of yrs (incl KGH)

S market hasn't really moved yet, quite a few solid players out there if BB thinks he needs one. Solid hybrid or safety options in draft again as well.

There were more “reports“ lately. I believe he'd like to stay . but he has to take the money if its there now.

Casillas would be a good signing, I was hoping they would have traded for him last year.

I saw that Schefter tweeted that the Pats traded for the rights to Calvin Johnson. I was shocked that it's not here. I went back and scoured twitter for it, to link for you guys. Nothing on Schefters's feed. Went back to my phone. re-tweeted by Jason Wolfe, from Adarn Schefter. FAHK! That's five-ten minutes I'll never get back. I hate these fake accounts, and then dudes retweet them. Asshats.

Kind of a CAP killer Kontra?
Coming back from injury. Less worry than having McClellan on the field for his next concussion I suppose and that is scary.
We need new blood. Mychal Kendricks can be had for a pick. I am sure they can find Howie Rosen's phone number in Philly.
The Eagles also might have to dump Curry.

Jason La Canfora more recently reported
that there is some “real trade potential” with Curry given the lack of quality pass rush options in free agency and the 2018 NFL Draft.

He only had three sacks last year but was rotated. 9 Sacks in 2014 so he can so it.
Perhaps a trade for both? Eagles are desperate for CAP.

I hadn't seen anything about him on Twitter recently, and I have Miguel, Schefter and Rap feeds open.

Anyway, I agree that this may be his only shot at decent money.

I'd guess that the Pats might be offering a deal with (maybe) $3M guaranteed that keeps his 2018 cap hit in the high-end of the ST range (+ incentives) with salaries escalating from there - and maybe a $1M 2019 option bonus.

As long as we're on to "elderly" DL who might sign for the veteran minimum (~$1M), there's also DE William Hayes (UFA, 'Fins):

Turns 33 in May, 6'2"/260. Top five in run-stop percentage, top 20 in pressure percentage through last season.

Another cheap potential insurance policy type for the 90-man off-season roster.

hate to disappoint you (since I wouldn't mind him as well) ..
