Replace Branch with Shelton and Flowers with Guy (or Suh) and you pretty much have a classic 30-front for a 3-4 (which brings up the question, "Can Suh play 2-gap well enough?"). Flowers then becomes the "Elephant" OLB with HT sort of in a Vrabel/Nink role.

Move Guy (or Suh) over to replace Shelton, then sub in Wise for HT (not literally - just for this diagram), and you have a 4-3 look.

But, yeah, the 30-front look didn't really work without Valentine or Branch. So, Shelton alone re-opens that part of the scheme. Really, then, Suh would be an upgrade over Guy. It's not clear to me that such an "upgrade" is absolutely necessary to execute this scheme well as merely a part of the overall hybrid scheme mix, especially considering the additional cost for Suh. If Suh is acquired, it would almost seem more appropriate to make the 30-front/3-4 aspect of the hybrid the predominant front, with Valentine mainly backing up Shelton and Guy/Butler backing up Brown/Suh. OTOH, Guy has more length than Brown, so maybe the line would be Suh-Shelton-Guy?

IDK. Just makin' this up as I go along.

Not sure how Flowers/Wise/(Lee) fit into this, but it would certainly make it seem that Rivers would be headed for more of an OLB role, and Van Noy into more of an ILB role.

Thanks - very good observations, and interestingly to me the Pats wouldn't really need to have another ILB as Van Noy and Hightower could fill it in as necessary, and Suh really does become a huge upgrade when compared to Guy, who would serve as a capable fill in. Presumably Wise could also play elephant. Ok, let's see if anything actually comes of this with Suh.....

I see Suh in a 3-4 as an absolute home run or a complete strikeout

Chris Hubbard - TE/OC/OG/RT

$7.5M APY, $18M gtd ... another possible comp for Fleming

I'm not disappointed that we did not sign the likes of Talib and Sherman. They were
pipe dreams because the Patriots don't have lots of salary cap space. I am upset that
they haven't been able to put the finishing touches on deals with their own players
other than Bolden and King who make near minimum salary.

I think Hubbard is a more versatile player who possesses more raw talent, but I do think that Fleming could command something in the 6m dollar a year range as a swing tackle.

I would let Solder go. Unless He really wants to stay which could mean a hometown discount

Jets sign Isiah Crowell big signing for them

Wonder if Lewis comes back now.

Said he wanted to stay close to the NYC metro area. Seems like that's not happening now that Stewart and Crowell are signed to the Giants and Jets.

San Fran and Indy are real threats.
The Colts will promise the world to stick it to us

Let's hope they do.

Nothing dumber than a team eating up a chuck of their cap to a Running Back, especially out of spite!

Hah, the Colts. Go ahead and take him out of spite. Eat up cap space and not worry about things like defensive players.

Not many choices left to pay him accordingly. He might be the loser of the FA season in terms of where he landed.

'

Idk just saw it was for $15m per so he got paid

Sherman's contract was a steal.
I was surprised that every team he got a meeting scheduled with declined to match SF's offer.
