I don't know how to feel about this. I don't know how big a hand he had in GB. But from 18-19 he was the assistant GM in Cleveland. His drafting in 18 was really good in 19 it wiffed, but how much say did he have for sure?

Since then you can't really judge him that well. The thing is finding talent is such a unique skill and there is no way to be sure about how good someone may be at it just because they can manage other things well and make the trains run on time.

Looking at this earlier this guy thinks some prominent guys on our scouting team could leave for promotions or same positions elsewhere.

I like Elliot Wolf ... he values and listens to his coaches ...
The scouts ... out there working hard and they also have his attention.

This is a way above Belichick listening to 1 college coach and drafting Harry.
The revamp will take a few years ... many on the staff hired quickly some to be replaced.
How this goes ... time will tell ... more coaches ... revamped front office ...

I don’t see how it is a violation of the Rooney rule. Last time I checked there is nothing in the rule that says that the draft must be handle by the general manager and not by the director of scouting.

Yeah. I have no idea what this actually means. If I were to guess, I would guess it is a strategem for keeping Wolfe on a probationary basis and as a way of giving somewhat plausible deniability to accusations the Pats have violated the Rooney Rule. For the record, I regard evading the Rooney Rule as an perfectly honorable thing to do.

I think the GM can hire & fire coaching staffs too; not so much the EVP of PP...

This could impact the speed we can trade for or deal a player.

I think that’s their argument. The problem is that saying they wanted to see how Wolf handled it can also be taken by NFL as they gave Wolf control but not the title. The control is what has to be interviewed for, not the title. And while the Pats can make any argument they want, giving the NFL ammunition to penalize the Pats very rarely turns out well for the Pats.

They can say that, but why did Wolf say before the draft that he had final say over the draft?

The title isn’t what matters for the Rooney Rule. It’s for any senior executive with say over personnel. Saying or implying that they gave that control to Wolf in a probationary capacity is the same as saying they gave Wolf control without interviewing other candidates. That’s the violation.

Some teams do that and others don’t. Pros and cons either way. It’s good to let the coach pick the final 53 but he might prioritize short term winning and cut a player who needs another year of development, which then makes it look like the personnel dept made a “bad” pick or signing. So the overall long term vision for the roster that the personnel dept wants to build can be maintained. However at the same time the coach has some level of immunity because he can say “I would’ve kept player X, if we kept him then we would’ve possibly won more games but it’s not up to me”. He doesn’t control what ingredients he gets but he’s in charge of cooking the dish etc. Depends on how convincing that situation is.

I think the fact that Wolf has the control over the roster in totality over Mayo tells me that the Krafts have more faith in Wolf currently - which does make sense since Mayo is still very green.
