Rob Ninkovich is not as good in coverage as you would suggest. Additionally, he is a DE. He rarely has to cover. Adrian Wilson was benched in Arizona last season for his weakness in coverage. But I don't disagree with your last two sentences.

Adrian Wilson was benched on a better defense with better safeties by a team that wanted to move on from him. Even if his safety days are behind him, there is a nickle LB role there for the taking.

He'll be a good addition to the Patriots.

I stated that I like the move because he adds a nice layer of physicality to the defense. But people really are overrating his coverage abilities, particularly when it comes to arguing why the most athletic LB we now have won't be in coverage in his rookie season. Maybe those lapses in coverage will be smoothed over by covering TE's more than WR's, but that's yet to be seen as we don't even know for sure what role he'll play yet.

    I disagree about FA retention.
    2013 Siginings
    Talib - Great signing
    Volmer - Great signing
    Wilson - Good signing
Amendola - Great signing assuming he stays healthy
Edelman - Good signing for short money
Arrington - Fair signing - On paper it looks like the pats over paid him. However, good nickle backs are becoming more important since the offensive rule changes.
    Washington - Good signing
    2013 FA Losses
Lloyd - He had good production but was high maintenance in the locker room and is a soft receiver (avoids contact, slides to the ground etc.). Brady has a history of making average receivers look good. I suspect that will happen this year.
Welker - Belichick and CO have a history of letting go of players a year to soon rather than late. Letting go of Welker has the potential to come back and bite the Pats in the ass. However, this move could also force Brady to spread the ball around more because his security blanket is gone. I am a huge Welker fan and will miss his contributions to the team. Time will tell if letting him go was the right move.
Chung - Not going to be missed
Woodhead - Great change of pace back who could be relied upon in clutch situations. The door is open for Vereen and Washington to take his snaps. My feeling is the Pats are confident that Vereen is ready to take Woodheads place.

I agree that Collins will get opportunities to cover, but Adrian Wilson will play the big Nickel Safety role and cover TEs and backs. He will excel in that role, because he will not be asked to cover WRs in space, like he was asked to in AZ.

I think it is asking a lot of Collins to have his main role be coverage LB, as it is much more complex and difficult than just simply rushing the passer. The consequences of faulking up are much higher as well.

He will probably start the season as a situational rusher and have his role expanded to cover a little more as the year progresses.

Who did he struggle covering the most that led to his benching? WRs or TEs?

See, I can't help but to think even if it is the latter that he'll be a better option than Brandon Spikes or Jamie Collins.

If Collins can cover a TE better than Adrian Wilson then I'm all on board but for now I'm dubious.

From your keyboard to God's screen. :)

I doubt he'll reach those heights (I think Rodney was the best player in the entire NFL in 2004), but I'd be perfectly happy with 2006-2007 level Rodney performance.

Wondering if this would be an appropriate thread to pose this question...

This is far from my first Training Camp go-around, yet living over an hour away from Foxboro, it'd make things a little easier on me to know exactly when the general public will know if practice will continue as scheduled or be moved inside. I was planning to attend tomorrow, yet weather is supposed to be overcast with showers. What would be a good time to call in / check website?

    OFFENSE

    RETAINED: Vollmer, Edelman
NOT RETAINED: Welker, Lloyd, Branch, Woodhead, Thomas
FREE AGENT ADDITIONS: Amendola, Jenkins, Washington, Svitek, (Blount)

In the end, Jenkins, Washington, and Svitek took the roster spots of Branch, Woodhead, and Thomas. This isn't bad. Amendola replaced Welker and Lloyd. That sux.

I don't think that we did well in these changes. It doesn't mean that it can't work. Vereen might step up, or not. Perhaps the rookie wide receivers will be productive (seems unlikely).
We certainly celebrate the better health of the offensive line (our #2 strength).

BTW, the idea that Welker was cut a year "early" implies that he will collapse this year. That seems unlikely. Even at 80%, he is much better than anything that we have.
    =================================

    DEFENSE

    RETAINED: Talib, Arrington, Cole
    NOT RETAINED: Love, Deaderick, Chung
NEW FA's: Kelly, Armstead, Wilson, (Benard)

Then free agents are likely to be upgrades, although it is unlikely that we "hit" on all three. We hope to see improvement from last year's rookies. Also, we hope for better health from
    Dowling and Fletcher.

    SIDE NOTE
Blount and Benard may or may not make the team. In any case, they would replace a player who on the team last year if they make the 53.

Finally, I didn't list rookies. Given the positions, I don't EXPECT immediate production, although one or two COULD produce. As the Bill's have taught us, we don't count on non-1st round rookies, and sometimes are pleasantly surprised.

    Some thoughts:

    1) Branch is a total non-factor. Saying anyone "replaced" him is like discussing who replaced Tiquan Underwood in 2012. If you must insert Jenkins onto the team, he is replacing Lloyd. So, you end up with Amendola replacing Welker, Jenkins for Lloyd and a bag of balls taking the place of Branch. Not ideal, but not the same breakdown as you have.

    2) Let's take a moment of silent gratitude that Lloyd is no longer a NE Patriot.

    3) Why is it unlikely that one of the rookies are productive? Sure, it might be too much to ask that both are good, but one? That is hardly unreasonable. And what does "productive" mean? NE's offense can still be quite good even if the best rookie WR ends up with 40 catches for 550 yards.

    4) Cutting a guy "early" means he will still be good this year and will drop off next year. I'm not even sure I buy that for Wes, he'll still be a good receiver in 2015, IMO. But I still have no problem seeing him go. It was time to move on, if not entirely, at least from having him be the top WR on the team.

    5) Let's take another moment of thanks that Brandon Lloyd is no longer a NE Patriot. :)

Unless this is a profoundly terrible draft class, you can take it to the bank that one player will earn a starting spot by November and another will have a regular role even earlier than that.

It was WR's that he was struggling the most against, from what I've gathered. I've already mentioned earlier in the thread that covering TE's and RB's out of the backfield may smooth over his liabilities in coverage.
