Finally, receiver Isaac Bruce could be heading to San Fran, where he'd be reunited with former Rams coach Mike Martz, who's now the offensive coordinator of the Niners.

NINERS START SPENDING

Though none are all that high in profile, the 49ers have already made a few moves in free agency.

The Niners reportedly have agreed to terms with Lions quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, running back DeShaun Foster, and Vikings linebacker Dontarrius Thomas. Foster recently had been released by the Panthers.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rose Press-Democrat also reports that the Niners will host defensive end Justin Smith on Friday. Smith is scheduled to visit the Vikings, too.

Citing a source, the Chicago Sun Times says free agent Lance Briggs has been linked to the Bucs, Browns, and Broncos.

Denver is called the "dark horse" to land Briggs, who's generated minimal interest with the first two hours of free agency. The 49ers are expected to be out of the running after signing Dontarrious Thomas early Friday.

Re: Officail 2008 Free Agency Thread

The way this market is moving, the Belichick/Pioli model will need some slight adjusting.

It's clear now that the difference in salaries between the stars and the grunts is going to be significant enough that multiple tiers are going to be set up on each team.

The Patriots used to excel by paying their stars about $6 million, a million or maybe two less than the market would bear, thereby allowing them to pay $3 or 4 million to middle class players like Bruschi, Neal, Jarvis Green, Rodney Harrison, etc. That allowed a good mix of stars, vets and young guys.

Now, with the top players rising to the $10 million range, there's a considerable gap between them and the middle class, so we're seeing marginal players land huge contracts. To preserve a middle class now, you have to shell out $5 or 6 million to these guys, and that may be too much to take a chance on some of them. Don't get me wrong: I'm sure they'd pony up that much to the likes of Bruschi and Vrabel. But this is going to get trickier now.

The Patriots may simply decide to hoard those $8-10 million paychecks for their top players, and then fill in around them the way everyone else does.

Otherwise, you better make damn sure you are hitting close to 100% with those $6 million paychecks, because having a few $6 million a year JAGs on your roster is a sure way to ensure losing seasons.

Re: Officail 2008 Free Agency Thread

The Dallas Morning News reported that the Cowboys have traded defensive tackle Jason Ferguson to Miami. Dallas and the Dolphins will swap sixth-round picks in the 2007 draft, which moves the Cowboys to the top of the round. Dallas also will receive a 2009 sixth-round pick.

After missing almost all of last season with a torn biceps, Ferguson became expendable when Jay Ratliff and Tank Johnson played well in his place. The Dolphins were in need of a 3-4 nose tackle after releasing Keith Traylor. Ferguson also played under Dolphins executive vice president Bill Parcells in 2005 and 2006 when the latter was Cowboys coach.
