Going to have to pay attention to the defensive backfield Thursday... What is the most common formation? 2 cb 2 s or are we using a lot of nickel?
Vrabel likes 3 CBs and 3 safeties from what I've seen. I would like to see gonzo at least for a series he hasn't practiced in 2 weeks.. but if it's to much a risk for the all pro then sit him. I'm thinking we use alot of nickel to have speed on the feild at all times?

Mrcus will of course be on the team. and he will get a nice amount of snaps in the slot depending on matchups. I simply think from what we have seen and read, the staff wants a bigger player in the slot (cover TE's?) and Austin see's 50% + of the slot snaps.
the fact that Austin had some issues on the outside, does not mean when everyone is healthy, he is the first option inside.
I could also see a vet signed depending on who comes available.
The best vet available was Alexander who signed with Ravens. The guys lined up outside have been Austin and James with Marcus in the slot.. also Austin has lined up in the slot as well. We have a competitive group of depth CB's guys that are aggressive and fight on every snap. I can assure you with Davis injury history Austin will be starting next to gonzo by the end of the season.

Vrabel has averaged playing over 3.5 corners per snap. 4 dbs will almost never happen outside of near the end zone and in short yardage.
5 dbs will be the base 6 will be common.

Agreed. I saw the same formations he deployed in Tennessee that Kevin Bayard thrived in.

of course if Davis or Gonzo injure, Austin may be next man up.
but if both are healthy, I am saying Austin gets 50%+ of the snaps in the slot
Marcus gets 40%+ between the slot and boundary
if the team likes a DB that gets released, it does not surprise me if the Pats have him in

Jones is by far the best slot corner. Austin isn’t in his ballpark. Austin will be the backup on the outside and the dime corner.
If everyone is healthy Jones will play 75-80% of the snaps all inside, and Austin probably around 35-40%

Nah, don't mess with hammy pulls.

What has Jones' percentage inside and out been so far in his career?

i think we use the nickle a lot, as well... as for Gonzo, nope, let him sit... prevention is key... rest/recovery is more important so the hammy issue doesn't linger all season long

The raiders wideouts don't seem too threatening. Their threat is probably Bowers and Jeanty. This game probably hinges on their DL vs our OL. Coaching can make the difference in this game.

That is what's most important the longer term plan. I was just worried about him being rusty.. I say put him on Bowers week 1?.??

As you've seen we spoken about Marcus Jones at nauseam.. guys will be put in positions of strength, for Marcus this is a contract year.. he needs to have a strong year. That's specifically in the slot and on STs. The slot is where he thrives.. Austin is a exclusive rights guy 7th rounder who has benefited from top tier coaching..James is another UDFA gem. These guys are real factors for the secondary the more depth you have the better. We literally can go 4 deep at CB and still be competive in the secondary.. remember whilhite, Wheatley, sterling Moore, alphonoso Dennard, Kyle Arrington.. those guys were serviceable in thier roles.. you know why they didn't end up with long NFL careers? They were diminutive CBs asked to play outside and got exposed.

I'd say that's peppers.. I'd still like gonzo on Bowers Davis can check Myers

but the HC wants to play a bigger slot
done deal
Marcus is the PR and back up slot CB

Who says he wants a bigger slot?

What he wants is the best slot.

Wasn’t your argument that he was going to cover a TE? Base is 3 Wr now so who is covering WR3?

They aren’t playing players because of their contract status.
Jones is the nickel because Jones is the best nickel on the team.
