Re: Pat Patriot in Danger?

The reporting on this is so incredibly weak. Why can't they have a modern helmet painted in the retro scheme?

The Bills wore the old helmet this week, so I'm sure they didn't get the memo.
Actually they did get the memo. Each player was wearing his usual helmet, just with a different decal (sticker) attached.

That is what they have been doing in previous years. I also enjoyed seeing old school helmet designs in the modern "breathable" helmet tech.

But the issue here is one of getting a helmet broken in. No amount of technology can create an already-broken-in helmet for a player. The safety committee has determined that it is safer for a player to use a broken-in helmet than a brand new one.

Can you link to information about breaking in a football helmet? The idea that the NFL is using safety gear that requires breaking in in order to be safe makes no sense to me.

I've read in numerous places that the padding is completely detachable and can be moved to a new shell. And clearly the shell doesn't get "broken-in".

Do you have a link for this and how to break in a helmet? Every helmet I have ever used I have worn for about 30 mins before taking contact in it. All the passing in the riddell revo, speed and 360, schutt vengeance, ion4d,DNA and air xp, xentith x3 and all 2011 onwards Rawlings models can have padding removed and put into another shell. I have tried all of these for myself and most of these are comfortable as soon as I put them on.

Well then you guys apparently know something that the NFL Safety Committee doesn't. Sorry, but I'll go with what the doctors on the NFL Safety Committee and Head, Neck, and Spine Committee concluded before I go with 2 anonymous yahoos on teh interwebz.

"Broken in" may have been a poor choice of words on my part, but those committees, with the M.D.'s on them, agreed that the safest move is for a player to use the same helmet throughout the season instead of switching back and forth. So I consider that "broken in" but I certainly agree that is an unintentionally vague term.

Interesting. And how many NFL games have you participated in while wearing your helmet?

Yes, us calling you out for making things up is clearly the same as claiming we know something the safety committee doesn't. Thank you do much for repeatedly telling us what the safety committee decided while decorating this thread with strawmen of all shapes and sizes!

What's your problem, sport? I admitted that my "broken in" statement was a poor choice of words on my part, and I clarified what I meant. FACT: The 3 groups (The Head Neck and Spine Committee, the Player Safety Advisory Panel and the Health and Safety Committee) with several actual real life doctors as well as ex-players on them recommended that in the interests of safety "players no longer wear different helmets as part of a 'Throwback' or 'Third' uniform," and that "Once players have properly fitted helmets that they're comfortable wearing, (this is what I meant when I said "broken in" though I admit it was not the best choice of words) the NFL doesn't want them changing helmets during the season just for appearances."

I ain't making this up, buddy.

Why you're throwing a temper tantrum and getting mad is me is a complete mystery - unless you're upset that I am taking the word of 3 professional committees with several doctors (and ex-players) on them over the ramblings of some anonymous yahoo on the internet who really really wants to see Pat Patriot.

Where did you get your doctorate in medicine that makes you think you're so much smarter than all the professionals on that committee?

i hope a solution can be find, i really hope so...

Pat Patriot must stay alive forever

This explains why the pats didn't use the throwbacks at home vs the jets, which they always do.

I like the old uniforms better.
The blue is annoying because it was only done to mimic the Giants and the flying Elvis is just a design relic from the atrocious look of the 90's.
The old school is classic.

Nike isn't going to like this, that's for sure. This will equal losing revenue due to teams not trotting out their throwbacks. Goodell will relent and please his Nike Overlords.

And a red jersey with our current helmet might look really f'ing cool. Hope they give it a try.

I agree with both of these thoughts. They'll work it out somehow for sure, there's too much money to be raked in for them to fail.

Many have suggested the thought of the old uni with the new helmet, so sure--why not? It may look pretty cool.
