Lol what? He completed 68% of his passes, won both games he started, had a 118 passer rating (I believe he had a perfect passer rating when he went out with the injury against the Dolphins), and had 4-0 TD/INT.

Yeah against the mighty Cardinals and Dolphins. Started well against the Dolphins and then cooled off when they started to figure him out. You also forgot to mention a couple of fumbles.

And how could he “win” the Dolphins game when he didn’t even finish a half.

Didn’t see a franchise QB in those 6 quarters worth paying a first round pick for, regardless of how much we wish we did.

IMO you are looking at this in precisely the opposite way.

From the SF perspective, I'd give more for a player who is under my control for at least a year for a reasonable price, than for a still-unproven player that I will have to break the bank for, long before I know if he is indeed the "real deal" or if he is another Brock Osweiler flash-in-the-pan. The need to pay JG 30 million limited the number of possible suitors and lowered the asking price, instead of raising it.

You can only play who’s on the schedule. He played well and looked far better than a lot of starting QBs. And he “won” the 2 games he started whether he finished the game or not. I don’t know how “they figured him out” when he left the game with a 24-0 lead, all three TDs being his.

And I honestly believe it is possible that one of the factors under consideration at the time was the benefit trading JG to SAN FRANCISCO so that Brady wouldn't sign there. If the Niners were a 7-9 team with Nick Mullens/C.J. Beathard right now and had tons of cap space.....Brady would be a Niner in 2 months, IMO.

100% agree on this. Can pretty much guarantee you Tom moves back to the Bay Area as soon as possible, if he doesn't move to Brazil.

Not sure about the Bay Area, but Giselle hates L.A. which is a completely different place....

Breaking down the benefit of the JG trade:

    LB Christian Sam
    CB Joejuan Williams
    RB Damien Harris
    T Yodny Cajuste
    QB Jarrett Stidham
    2020 4th rounder
    2020 6th (Duke Dawson)
Brady NOT GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO

Right...I understand the benefit of trading him to San Francisco, but by all reports the Patriots reached out to the 49ers and proposed a trade for a second round pick, which was shockingly low. Considering it was halfway though JG's final year, including additional picks, or moving up to a first round pick, in the even the 49ers re-signed JG, is the norm for this type of deal. Because of the uncertainty, the conditional pick made sense. The 49ers were going to need to pay JG a pretty big contract if they wanted to extend him, or they could have franchised him. In either case, he's a $20M+ player. A second round pick is not fair compensation for that type of player in any world.

There’s a bunch of annoying things related to conversations about him here, but one of the most annoying is that whole “Dolphins were figuring him out” thing.

yes you can but that doesn’t mean doing well against those two teams when that’s your only meaningful football played means you’re worth a first round pick.

As I recall Jimmy missed 6 of his last 8 throws vs Miami or something like that.

Either way, as discussed way more times than I cared to back then, the dude was good but not THAT good.

not as annoying as the idea from JG fanboys that we should send Brady packing for a guy who could only play not even 6 quarters of decent football against two middling teams when the team needed him for 4 games. Now that was annoying.

I agree that a 2nd rounder was a discounted price for JG....but it was really because BB did not trade JG prior to the '17 season, IMO. Had BB traded JG 2 months after SB LI...I think he would at least have netted a first rounder. So, it lends some credence to the theory that BB wanted JG to stick around.....but I have a hard time believing that BB thought JG would take a discounted deal without testing the market....

I love Jimmy G and will root for him against anyone but the Patriots. That being said I’m the biggest Brady homer on the planet and was happy when they traded Jimmy because that meant Brady would be around a while longer.

    Christian Sam - LB depth.
JoeJuan Williams - A huge corner...they don't grow on trees.
Damien Harris - Possible Burkhead replacement....and I think might even steal carries from Michel.
Yodny Cajuste - Can't have enough line men.
Jarrett Stidham - At least the back up QB.
    2020 4th/6th could be players.

I’ve been told by some on here that Dawson is not a bust so there’s that too.

They also got the 49ers to eat most of Hoyer's contract (paying him $10M for half a season). He wasn't officially included in the deal because BB remembered that would have cost the Patriots a draft pick.

Hoyer is also the likely reason he went straight to SF: if they wanted Garoppolo, and gave up Hoyer, then BB takes care of the very problem trading Garoppolo raised.

Plus, of course, don't forget two things.
    • Garoppolo had intrinsic value as QB2 (among other things, saving them about $5M a year vs. a veteran backup).
    • The 49ers paid a second-rounder for half a season of Garoppolo, with the chance to keep him beyond that for the low, low price of $25M+ a year.

My previous post notwithstanding, I will say this much: it is a valid question to ask why the Patriots didn't trade him after SB51. There was no chance of him winning the job at that point, and the economics of keeping him didn't change between SB51 and the day they traded him.

He was right to keep JG around into 2017. He had to hedge against Brady declining. Sure, Brady didn't in 2017, but Belichick had no way of knowing that with any certainty entering the season.
