Vikings are 1-4 and now lose Jefferson. They may also have an eye towards 2024 and be thinking about how to set themselves up for the future. I would not be shocked to see them leave Jefferson on IR for a while, trade Cousins and go for a top QB in 2024 who would flourish with that loaded offense for years.

We discussed it in another thread - would not surprise me to see NE be the team to acquire Cousins.
Cousins couldn't win in Washington which is why they moved on from him. Cousins couldn't win in Minnesota which is why they might be thinking of moving on from him. He looks good on paper but doesn't win enough. If he's our Alex Smith, then that's ok with me, but if we have a shot at a top 2 QB in the draft and have one we're pretty sure of, I'd rather do that.

No thanks on that choker Cousins.

Exactly Cousins is who he is a decent NFL QB who won't take you to the promise land. He seems to always flops in Big games.

That’s my thought process - he would be more of an Alex Smith. Things would stabilize. My concern is that if you’re so bad that you can get a top 2 QB, and then you use that pick on a QB, your roster still sucks and that new QB will just look like Bryce Young on the 0-5 Panthers this year. And then imagine if that QB is a whiff like Zach Wilson?

I can see that. Build some stability first. It's sad, but before this season, I thought we were there. Oh well. What are you thinking for trade compensation for Cousins? I could get on board with trade for him, get Higgins in free agency and draft the best LT.

I think Cousins has void years for the rest of his contract so I think that makes him a rental. I'd like him but not sure I want to give up a lot for a rental and that kinda turns us into the Colts from the past few years...

Yeah, I can see that point. But most rebuilds aren't one offseason affairs. To get a WR1, LT, QB is probably going to take a year or two. Rent Cousins for a year or two and look for the QB and trade up whatever it takes to get him. It's a strategy, even if it's not my favorite.

No, let's just take our lumps this year and hope a high QB pick is a good one. I'm not as pessimissitic about the team as many of you seem to be. I have perceived the OL to be adequate, receivers are open. Neither group are populated by all stars but they are good enough to win with competent QB play. The defense is good but decimated by injuries as was the case with the OL. Let the wounded get healthy this year. Next year, soft schedule, hope for better luck on injuries. Likely have to replace Judon, Brown and Onwenu next year. Lots of cap space. I don't want a new coach. I don't want another 3 year reclamation project.

This is mostly where I am, thinking we're a few pieces (and a lot of healing) away. But I think if we're drafting a QB high and trying to find a WR1 and a real OT, we probably need a vet QB to run the offense until the rookie QB is ready to play. If Cousin's price isn't too high, I'm okay with that. If it's Foles or [insert not good enough vet here], that's ok with me.

Yeah, that’s along the lines of what I am thinking. I really don’t know what his trade comp would be though. Maybe a 3rd? It’s basically for half a season of him and he’s older. But at the same time there’s some competition.

I don't really want him mid-season. I'm of the opinion that this season is going down the tubes, but maybe that's for the best to get a high QB draft pick. Unfortunately, I feel like we're in that cycle until we get our Allen or Burrows.

Having such a bad season and taking a QB high like that feels antithetical to the Patriots culture in a way to me though. I feel like it's more in their DNA to try to be steady and maybe grab one of those QBs that they could get around 10-ish like Mahomes was with a trade up while they already have a decent QB that can start, and let that other QB sit. But a lot of that culture has to do with Bill, so he he gets canned then maybe that doesn't matter. I guess if Mayo is the replacement then some of that culture is probably still intact.

Yeah, I was thinking about that the other day. The entire DNA of the team is built around Bill and has been for 20 years, which is kind of rare. If he goes, I don't know what the personality of the team is going to be anymore.

I imagine anyone coming in is going to try to follow the blueprint of the Chiefs when they hired Reid. Revamp that offense. Get an Alex Smith that can win. Then look for the future at QB.
