This thread is showing the false precepts the “The Cultists” are shaping already to push blame away from Belichick onto their scapegoat in the making - Mac Jones.
You don’t force a punt in a home game against a divisional rival. But, it’s an interception thrown by the rookie QB that loses you the game. You give up 195 yards rushing to the 31st ranked rushing offensive, but the interception thrown by the rookie QB, when his experienced, now departed, OC foolishly had him in an empty set on 3rd and 2, that costs them that game. The Colts run for 225 yards, the STs give up a blocked punt for a TD. But, it’s the rookie QBs INTs which costs them that game. You see where this is going, don’t you?
If you want to believe that, be my guest, but, it’s not anywhere near an honest appraisal of the 2021 Patriots; It’s not an honest analysis either as to what and where the Patriots have to improve to he better in 2022.
Yes, Mac Jones has to improve and take better care of the ball among other things. But, we’ve had our understanding skewed about the propensity of QBs throwing INTs by the QB who was here 20 years and now plays in Florida. QBs throw interceptions, and Jones will throw more than the old guy here did. The TEAM now has to be better to offset that.
You can’t be in the bottom third in run defense running a scheme designed to limit big runs and still give up 16 runs of more than 20 yards with three of more than 40 yards. You can’t let teams control the game one run play after another without being able to stop it. You can’t let offenses score 20+ points a game with one QB completing only 5 passes and another QB throwing for only 105 yards.
Other than having good health, the fate of the 22 Patriots will be in large part determined by whether the greatest defensive coach on pro football history can get his defense to improve against the run without significantly compromising his pass defense with the players he’s chosen, plus some likely additions, and the scheme they will run.
If he can’t do it, then maybe his cultists might want to finally admit that at 70 years old and after 40+ years of burning his candle on both ends, it just might be time for him to retire.
