Next Stop, the Underwear Olympics

Question....if Spikes is indeed sent packing, how will Pats go about adding depth...draft (low rounder likely) or FA? Any FA names that might be a cost effective fit?

Probably the draft. As the combine goes on, I'm becoming more and more convinced that the Pats will work on the DL through free agency. They probably have Red Bryant in their crosshairs as we speak and flirted hard with him prior to 2012. They will more than likely use the draft for a LB/SS and maybe adding a DT/DE to the rotation. Christian Jones just posted a very solid 40 time. I know Mayo has been all over that. Shazier's numbers have been eye popping.

Ouch. 4.93 for Tyler Starr. Slow.

Decent 1.65 10 yd though.

Ryan Shazier had a 42" vert. That is a very big wow! As in better than Jamie Collins.

10'10" broad too.

Wow! I'll still take Collins' numbers (1" less vert, but record broad jump, and 13# heavier) but that's impressive.

Christian Jones 4.63, 1.66

Adrian Hubbard ran well 4.63, 1.62 at 250+

That's much better than I thought Hubbard would run. I like him as a 4th-5th round developmental DE. At 6'6" he can still put on some muscle and not lose any speed but he doesn't play as fast as those numbers say.

Jones' 2nd run 4.60 if a 1.60 10-yard split. That seems about right to me.

Khalil Mack 4.62 40, 40" vertical, 10'8" broad jump. Solid numbers.

Anyone like Telvin Smith as a safety conversion? 6'3" 218#, 4.41 speed, 1.53 10 yard split. Very smart, instinctive player. Natural leadership, great vision.

If I was Seattle I might consider doing that. In their scheme I think he could play the DT or the LEO.

Seattle wouldn't be able to find enough snaps for a first round pass rusher. Unless they lose Bennett.

I can't see him leapfrogging Robinson/Matthews at OT, the 3 QBs, Khalil/Barr or Watkins/Evans. None of the teams in the top 10 is desperate for a penetrating DT.

13/14 seems like his ceiling to me. I don't think top 20 is a lock because of his size. Sharif Floyd was being mocked as high as #3 a year ago at this time, and fell to #23.

But Donald is twice the prospect Floyd was.

He might have a faster 3-cone than 40 time.

Khalil Mack 4.62 40, 40" vertical, 10'8" broad jump. Solid numbers.

He get's out of the gate weird. He's much more explosive than his 10 yard split shows I think. I hope he goes to the NFC.

That’s not a deal killer for me, especially at the price he’ll likely be available at, it’s the initial burst which is important, a stich in time saves nine.

Well there's speculation they'll cut Bryant to keep Bennett. An alternate plan if Bennett wants huge money would be to trade him in the last year of his contract to save money for when the rest of the big names come up while paying Donald a lot less and retaining Bryant.

Just saw that on NFL.com. Looked like he was running with cinderblocks around his ankles. Looks like the perfect LB in our defense.

Larry Webster official 4.58 40, 1.57 10 yard split, 36.5" vertical, 10'3" broad jump. Waiting on 3-cone and short shuttle results.

Webster or Logan Thomas (or both) please.

Yes please.

Ah, but this is twice the draft that last year's was.

True.

What? The only way I could see them taking Donald is if either Bennett walks, or they want a younger, cheaper, locked up version of McDonald. Then they could trade McDonald. Possible I guess.

Also I typed 'would' but meant wouldn't in my post you quoted.

What round grade do you and Merril have on Telvin? I would love to have this guy as a safety convert. The fact that he is 218 makes him a little hard to peg because he would need to develop more to find his natural position. My initial reaction would be rounds 3-4.

He's been discussed as possibly a 2nd round pick, but I doubt it. He's very undersized as a WLB, and will take some time to convert as a safety. I think 3rd.

Big fan of Christian Jones; he has looked pretty good in the drills. I think the pats need another athletic LB in the Jaime Collins mold. I haven't seen any of their tape, but Prince Shembo (ND) and Pierre-Louis (BC) really impressed me in the combine drills.

Telvin Smith also popped out to me

I'll defer to Mayo on this one. He's much further along than I am right now.

Lavonte David was knocked for being too small, but Smith is 15 pounds lighter than him. I think late second has to be his ceiling.
