OB probably thought he needed a year of seasoning and probably wanted him on the PS for a year. BB saw the same thing and convinced him to join the Pats. IIRC, the Pats paid him as if he was on the roster.

Yeah, that's the sh!t in the punchbowl that no-one mentions. He was with O'Brien. Welker was on the staff. And, still, they cut him. I'm rooting for him based on measurables as much as anyone else but if he's even in the same ballpark as Welker or Amendola, I doubt the Texans would have cut him.

We didn't sign him from their PS. They released him from theirs and we subsequently signed him. Had the Texans wanted to develop him on their PS he'd have been there all year unless a team signed him to the active roster.

I wouldn't put Patterson on any WR list before he shows up in camp. And even then Id guess its more likely he is only a situational WR not really taking place of a full WR spot (starter or backup).

Don't sleep on C. Hollister. Had a great last preseason game after being sidelined w injury most of TC. Very good gunner. (also BB seems to be thrilled to be the first HC ever to have two sets of twins on the team..)

Not really. I like both's potential for this team.

btw - Bill when “discussing“ Patterson today spoke of his situational treats: return, multiple backfield option.. We'll see. For the moment it was good to hear they'll try him as punt returner as well.

Sometimes teams end up having to cut a guy who they'd like to have kept and developed due to other, more pressing, roster issues. Can't really say that this hasn't happened to the Pats.

Rex Ryan, when he was with the Jets, cut an RB he really liked because he'd had three WRs injured in the previous game and had to make room on the roster in order to sign another one for insurance. Ryan even said, later, that he didn't think anyone else would be that interested, especially the Pats.

And that's how the Pats got Woodhead.

IDK. The Pats signed McCarron only a couple-three days after he cleared waivers. The Pats themselves don't always re-sign a guy to their PS immediately after he clears waivers. Sometimes it's been 3-4 days or more. No idea why.

So, it could be that the Texans intended to make that transaction and simply didn't get to it in time.

If Patterson's ST chops (beyond KR) are really good, he might replace an ST/ELEO-reserve like Grissom...

Bolden possibly. Or, they could keep Bolden as ST/emergency backup and go with just three RBs in the "active" RBBC.

The thing with Glitch, though, is that it doesn't really free up a roster spot, since the Pats would still be carrying a fourth (real) safety.

If Patterson's ST chops (beyond KR) are really good, he might replace an ST/ELEO-reserve like Grissom, thus allowing the Pats to keep a 6th (real) WR. However, with the Pats likely to be keeping 3 QBs (including a draftee), and perhaps needing to keep a 9th OL (given the OT situation), it would still restrict the head count at another position (2 TE?, 3 RB?, 4 LB?).

There is no way for me to believe that Hogan and Mitchell are in the same group as McCarron and Britt. Both have actually contributed in big games in a NFL game.

Also I'd suggest using the ages they will have around the start of the season. Hogan is already 30 (and will be 31 by the end of October). Britt will be 30 after the first week of the season. I am only pointing this out because as some have mentioned age will start to play a role soon.

The list/grouping is merely a menu. Right now, probably most of us are certain of what our choices would be based on our past experience. However, it's a new season, and we really don't yet know how these guys will look compared to one another come August and September.

While it certainly seems that a guy like McCarron is more likely to faceplant than Hogan, it's still possible that he (or Dorsett) could be outplaying Hogan 4-5 months from now. We just won't know until we get there.

The reality is that very few are really locks. However, many are almost locks.

Hogan is not any more vulnerable than the top group. IMHO, he is much more likely to be extended than cut. He is as likely to be on the 53 as Edelman (injury issue) and Cooks (trade possibility).

Sure, Britt or Dorsett could be great in camp.

Absent injures, I would greatly surprised if Mccarran made the team. There are just too many ahead of him in the depth chart.

Personally (without a trade), I'd be very surprised if Edelman, Cooks, Hogan and Patterson weren't on the 53. Mitchell, Britt and Dorsett are probably the best EVER competition for the #4/#5 WR.

Between Edelman’s age and injury history, Cooks contract situation, Hogan’s age and Mitchell’s injury history, I’m not feeling incredibly optimistic about the 2019 season and slightly beyond. But then again, most of this roster feels like it’s on a year to year basis. I’m sure it’s intentional by Bill, but as a fan....ugh.

As it currently stands, only Edelman, Mitchell and Dorsett are under contract through 2019.

McCarron & Cody Hollister are ERFA at the end of this season. I suppose one might think of that as being almost under contract through 2019, but technically not.

Hogan, Cooks, Patterson & Britt are currently UFA at the end of this season.
